Official Funimation websites:
A Certain Magical Index | A Certain Scientific Railgun A Certain Magical Index Synopsis: Kamijo is a student in Academy City, where people use science to develop supernatural abilities. The guy's got a lot of heart - luckily for a young nun named Index. She's on the run from a sorcery society that covets the astonishing 103,000 volumes of magical knowledge stored in her memory. When Index stumbles into Kamijo's life, she finds a faithful friend and protector. While Kamijo's easily the weakest kid in Academy City, he's got something else going for him: the Imagine Breaker, an unexplainable power stored in his right hand that negates the powers of others. With scientists and sorcerers attacking from all sides, the Imagine Breaker will definitely come in handy, but it's Kamijo's loyalty to Index that will be his greatest weapon in the fight to keep her safe. A Certain Scientific Railgun Synopsis: Misaka Mikoto, a middle-school girl with an amazing and highly-destructive ability to control electricity, is one of the top level espers in Academy City, a highly developed town populated by students with supernatural abilities. Joined by her three very different girl friends - her flirty roommate and skilled teleporting esper Kuroko; Kuroko's innocent rookie partner at the local student-run law enforcing agency Uiharu; and Uiharu's best friend Saten, who has no esper powers - Mikoto encounters various strange phenomena and eccentric people through her adventures in this exciting scientific town. |
Re: A Certain Magical Index | A Certain Scientific Railgun
They licensed this back in like 2009 iirc. I don't see what is taking them so long.
Even over at Viz with Inuyasha Final Act, it's been 4 years since licensing and no release yet. Comes out this Winter finally unless it gets pushed back. Why is it only certain, more popular shows, seem to be held up for years before getting released despite being licensed ahead of a hundred other shows that have been release since then? |

It was stuck on the so called "Geneon Universal merger." Index is solicited on DVD. Railgun is starting to get streamed on FUNimation.com (EVS members). I find it more disappointing that Index is not on Blu-ray and it's probably the same case for Railgun.
Railgun and Index 2 however should be HD. Though maybe I'm wrong about Index, I guess I should check into it for confirmation. |

Re: A Certain Magical Index | A Certain Scientific Railgun
Which series should one watch first?
|
Re: A Certain Magical Index | A Certain Scientific Railgun
The shows were aired:
Index S1 - Oct 2008 Railgun S1 - Oct 2009 Index S2 - Oct 2010 Railgun S2 - April 2013 Personally, I would recommend watching Railgun first. Both series take place in the same city. And the characters sometimes cross paths. But for the most part, the main story arcs and characters are totally unrelated. Except for the Sisters story arc which is (IMO) the best story arc of both shows. It's covered over 3-4 episodes in Index S1. But the whole Sisters story is really fleshed out in Railgun S2, taking almost the entire season. If you watch Index S1 first, the outcome and emotional impact of that storyline will be prematurely ruined. Therefore, I recommend watching Railgun first. Also, I find Railgun to be much more accessible. Index can be a little confusing, mixing religion and magic. Railgun is pretty straightforward with super-powered cute girls. I didn't really like Index until I watched Railgun and got an appreciation for the series. But even now, my favorite Index episodes are the crossover ones with the Railgun characters. |
