Netflix will begin streaming the late Isao Takahata and Studio Ghibli's Grave of the Fireflies anime film in Japan on July 15. The film will be the first feature-length work by Studio Ghibli to stream in Japan.

About the exhibition

Following the Academy Museum’s inaugural exhibition, Hayao Miyazaki in 2021, Studio Ghibli’s PONYO will celebrate Studio Ghibli and the many elements of the traditional hand-drawn animation processes used throughout the film Ponyo (2008). The magical water worlds, the unique flowing aesthetic of hand-painted drawings, and the film’s themes of transformation, human connections, and joy will be on full display. Visitors will be invited to explore the enchanting world of Ponyo through hands-on experiences designed for all ages. These include an interactive animation table, where guests can create their own animated sequences, and a playful, immersive environment that allows younger visitors to step into the magical oceanic world of the film.

Featuring an exclusive donation of original materials from Studio Ghibli to the Academy Collection—some of which will be displayed in North America for the very first time—the exhibition will include over 100 materials that have been hand-picked by Studio Ghibli, including art boards, posters, a Studio Ghibli animation desk, and original hand drawings by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli.

Studio Ghibli’s PONYO is curated by Senior Exhibitions Curator Jessica Niebel, with the support of Assistant Curator Emily Rauber Rodriguez.

Surprisingly, Kiki's Delivery Service is eligible for A-List, so no brainer for me to see it in IMAX. Lots of showings over the course of the week too, in both Japanese or English.

Hayo Miyazaki Personally Draws New Art of Nausicäa, Kiki, Totoro, Spirited Away

Panoramas go on display at Ghibli Park from July 8

Renowned animation studio Ghibli announced on Tuesday that Hayao Miyazaki personally drew new art pieces that will go on display at the Ghibli Park's Grand Warehouse. The art pieces are the centerpieces of 31 “panorama boxes” highlighting titles from across Studio Ghibli's library (and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, which strictly speaking, predates the studio itself). The exhibition is set to begin on July 8.

Each panorama box depicts a single scene, but with the individually drawn characters, background, and foreground elements separated on different layers for a subtle three-dimensional effect. (The Ghibli Museum in Tokyo already has several earlier boxes on display.)

Miyazaki began working on the new boxes around June 2022, after the animation production work ended for his most recent feature, The Boy and the Heron. Veteran art director Noboru Yoshida and others collaborated on the backgrounds.
