Re: What animes have you purchased recently?

You know Clannad After Story being released on blu ray irks me man. I bought the DVD set already. Do you think it will be worth a Double dip?

I haven't bought any anime in a month or two. Nothing seems interesting. Its about time you bought Noir. I bought the Noir "white" box set from Amazon for like 12.99. Brand new too.

Re: What animes have you purchased recently?

I triple dipped on Clannad! I have the four sub-only releases, both dub DVD collections and soon both Blu-ray collections plus the movie on dvd.

As for Clannad on Blu-ray, I thought there was a very huge difference in video quality. Anyone else out there that can comfirm my thoughts of the Blu-ray? Also on the Blu-ray the English and Jananese audio are both DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, the dvd is only 2.0.

Re: What animes have you purchased recently?

I ordered the "Rose of Versailles" box set (part 1) from Right Stuf last year and it only just arrived last week. Previously I'd only had the first four episodes on two VHS tapes, one with fan-subs., one without subs. The one without subs looked great. The fan-sub looked terrible.

They were mostly one or two volumes out of six that cost about $3 each.

I went back last weekend and bought 12 more.
The only one I watched so far is "My Hime: My Otome" Anime Legends complete collection for $8, I liked it.

I also got Gunslinger Girl complete collection for $8 and "Crest of the Stars complete collection for $9, but I don't know if they are good yet. and the rest are broken collections

Re: What animes have you purchased recently?

I dropped out of anime fandom for several years, and and coming back just to dabble, I've noticed a seismic shift. Apparently, the predicted tanking of the market did indeed happen, Genon/Pioneer, Bandai, ADV have all been gone for years and many noteworthy titles have dropped OOP. That's what I get for sleeping on the job, I suppose.

Yep.

And the main distribution channel is now Internet streaming. Not DVD/BluRay sales.

I would never say Internet streaming would ever top DVD/BluRay sales, at least not for making a profit. The only animes I watch on the internet are the ones I buy the DVD/BluRay when available.

Those older distributors have all fallen by the wayside. The anime market has definitely shifted to streaming, both of the legal and illegal variety. Unfortunately, many older series are only accessible through illegal streams or downloads.

Since anime's main consumers were younger people that never got attached to physical media in the first place, it was one of the first genres devastated by the decline in the DVD market.

I wouldn't necessarily blame it all on the young... anime is in kind of a unique place because it's all translated material, and historically it would take time to come over here in translated form. Illegal fansubs come out a day or so after it airs on TV in Japan. I think that's why a lot of the companies switched to streaming, because no way they could compete with that with physical media.

Then you have the physical media market in Japan emphasizing high prices for only the most adamant collectors, and with even the nominal restrictions of being in different regions now removed with Blu-Ray, the Japanese companies don't want fans in Japan reverse-importing cheaper American versions, so now we have these high priced, collectors-only bilingual releases that will in no way attract new fans.

I may not like it, but that's happening in general, the DVD market is sadly dying, from what I hear.

I wish Netflix would off the option of subtitles and the original Japanese track on the stuff that they stream. I might become a stronger supporter of streaming if it offered more of the options that DVD did.

Weren't anime fansubbers some of the fist innovators in using the Internet that way to begin with?

Unfortunately, many older series are only accessible through illegal streams or downloads.
Or obscenely expensive used copies. Apparently there isn't any money in another distributor picking them up?

Since anime's main consumers were younger people that never got attached to physical media in the first place, it was one of the first genres devastated by the decline in the DVD market.
That fact that it was bootleg-heavy in the fansub community that was probably cutting into in the first place probably didn't help. The times, they are a'changin' like it or not.

I suppose it's a testament to the fans who don't even speak the language they they're that rabid.

That anyone in Japan can afford anything amazes me, their culture regarding home video must be completely different from ours. You know, if they know that the collector's market have their eye on that stuff, why don't they ever subtitle toku and stuff? I might be will to pay for those ridiculously expensive DVDs if it's something I want, but I have to be able to understand what the hell they're saying.

Here in the US, you mean? I remember when Adult Swim first came on the scene, it experienced a pretty big mainstream explosion, how'd it shrink so rapidly? Lack of material?
