Toonami Revival to Have 'New Original Anime Programming'
posted on 2012-05-16 21:39 EDT
Press release also reveals that return of block will be aired on Saturdays from 12-6 a.m.
A Wednesday press release released by Adult Swim, the cable and satellite network that is paired with Cartoon Network, has revealed that the network is developing "new original anime programming" for the return of the Toonami programming block. Previous series featured on the block will also make their return.
The release also reveals that the revived block will be shown once a week from midnight to 6 a.m. on Saturdays.
The company had asked its Twitter followers in April if they would want the block back. Cartoon Network temporarily brought back Toonami on April Fool's Day, with reruns of such anime as Dragon Ball Z, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo!, Outlaw Star, Blue Submarine No. 6, Trigun, and more. The marathon had even included newly produced bumper videos of Toonami's mascot T.O.M.
Cartoon Network ended Toonami in 2008 after an 11-year run.

Yea, if they don't put anything new on, Cartoon Network's basically rebranding Adult Swim Toonami. If this is done right, it could (hopefully) help reinvigorate anime's popularity. It's really going to come down to what Cartoon Network decides to fill those slots with. If it is new anime and not the same stuff Adult Swim has been showing for the last couple of years, then count me in, it could be interesting. If it turns out to be the same generic shonen/zany comedy stuff that I've seen get released over the last couple years, count me out. I have no interest in that stuff.

Bleach and Kekkaishi are both Viz, right? Any chance for Bakuman and/or Tiger and Bunny? I'd think both would fit in.

Bakuman anime still belongs to Media Blasters. I think Tiger & Bunny could be possible. Though I don't think it would be this early. Another one that some would through in is Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.

Toonami's New Schedule to Be Kept Secret Until May 26
Jason DeMarco, former Toonami producer and recently promoted vice president of strategic marketing and promotions for Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, revealed via his Twitter account on Thursday that the revived Toonami block's schedule will remain a secret until its airing on May 26. ANN previously posted TV Guide's listing for Toonami's programming block, but DeMarco responded via Twitter, "That is NOT the lineup. But to be clear, I don't think that's a bad lineup."

I'm a little leery as to what their "new original programming" will be. I hope Cartoon Network doesn't load it up with their own shows.

All will be answered later today.
So: New Toonami! First things first. For now, that IS the schedule. I know I said we wouldn't tell you, but the higher ups changed that.
DeMarco added that Toonami will not be showing Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, and similar titles since "the rights to those shows are owned by our competition or are out of our price range." He continued, "Something you should know about THIS Toonami: We have very, very little $$. This experiment will need ratings success to receive more funding for new shows, more [mascot character] Tom animation, etc. I'm thankful for the $$ we've gotten, but it isn't a lot."
DeMarco also clarified Adult Swim's May 16 press release, which said that the network is developing "new original anime programming" for Toonami's return. Toonami will not have original titles created specifically for the programming block, "just new acquisitions." DeMarco said that he personally "love[s] One Piece and would love to see it on CN again" along with Gundam Wing. Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Fairy Tail, and Inuyasha: The Final Act are some of the "many shows we've been looking at" or discussed.
DeMarco confirmed that Steven Blum will reprise his role of Tom, which "will be an updated hi-res version of Tom 3.0" aboard a slightly different but almost identical version of the spaceship Absolution. However, the character Sara will not appear for now ("costs too much to make"), and Peter Cullen will not be the voice of the block's promos due to his busy work schedule. The anime titles will keep their theme songs, and Toonami "will make our own 'pre' intros."

Re: Toonami is back on May 26th, 2012!
Toonami is pretty-much what got me interested in anime in the first place.
...and Pokemon.
I'm all for the return and revival of Toonami but I don't have cable anymore so I won't be able to check it out for the time being. Still great news!

I guess they have no interest in comedy or slice of life shows. Too bad. I'm not into the action shows these days.

Re: Toonami is back on May 26th, 2012!
The two new shows are:
Watch Deadman Wonderland episode 1 clip
Watch Casshern Sins episode 1 clip
Deadman Wonderland:
Ganta is the only survivor after a mysterious man in red slaughters a classroom full of teenagers. He’s framed for the carnage, sentenced to die, and locked away in the most twisted prison ever built: Deadman Wonderland. And then it gets worse.
At Deadman Wonderland, convicts are forced into brutal deathmatches for the amusement of the masses, the cheers of the crowd drowning out the screams of the dismembered. Even when Ganta befriends Shiro, an unusual female inmate, his dark fate crushes all hope – until he discovers the strange ability to wield his spilled blood as a weapon. Ganta learns his new skill might be related to the murderous man in red and uncovers disturbing secrets that could expose those who stole his freedom. He’s determined to see justice served – but first he’ll have to fight for his life in a prison that holds a million ways to die.

Casshern Sins:
Casshern – a cybernetic assassin with no memory of his past – awakens in a corrosive wasteland where nothing survives for long. A plague known as the Ruin sweeps across this once-vibrant world, reducing everything in its path to rubble and scattering any chance for salvation. Robots and humans alike – or what little remains of them – seek vengeance against Casshern for the life he took and the role he played in their Ruin. A machine built to kill, Casshern murdered the last hope for this world, but now, lost in a future he does not recognize, he will fight to save the dying.

Deadman Wonderland had potential. It's violent and bloody (if you like that sort of things). The problem is that the series is incomplete.
As for Casshern Sins, I would say it's underrated. You don't hear enough about this series. The animation and artwork is very unique (it may turn some people away though). The storyline isn't overly complex, but I think it works.

It did OKAY. Not bad but not measurably better than the week before. We need to do better. Hopefully we will!
