Production based on Katsuhiro Otomo's manga to begin in late February/early March

The Variety entertainment trade magazine is reporting on Wednesday that Warner Bros. has green-lit the live-action film adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira manga. Production on what Variety describes as a "potential tentpole project" is set to begin in late February or early March. (A "tentpole" franchise is a property which will, in theory, support a studio financially for much of a particular movie season.)

According to Variety the film's current story goes as follows: "Set in New Manhattan, the cyberpunk sci-fi epic follows the leader of a biker gang who must save his friend, discovered with potentially destructive psychokinetic abilities, from government medical experiments."

Variety had reported in July that Warner hired director Jaume Collett-Serra (Unknown, Orphan, House of Wax) to direct the film, which was "being reenvisioned as a $90 million" blockbuster project. In May, previous director Albert Hughes left the project due to "creative differences" on the film.

The development team with producer Andrew Lazar (Jonah Hex, Space Cowboys, Get Smart) hired a writer named Albert Torres last year, after screenwriters Gary Whitta, Mark Fergus, and Hawk Ostby were previously attached to the project. When the project was originally announced in 2008, it was intended to be the directorial debut for Ireland's Ruairi Robinson. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, The Aviator) is producing through his Appian Way production company

This has "disaster" written all over it, a la SPEED RACER and DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION. "New Manhattan"??? Didn't John Carpenter do ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK already?

What does Escape from New York have to do with anything?
Have you read or seen Akira?

Yes, have you? Then you would understand that I was referring to the fact that they've shifted the story's locale from Neo-Tokyo to "New Manhattan." Such a shift makes me think of what Carpenter did with Manhattan in ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK oh so many (30) years ago.

(Interestingly, we've long since passed the "future" period when ESCAPE took place--1997--while we're only a few years from when AKIRA takes place--2019.)

Okay. I've only seen Escape from New York a couple of times, and while I remember the plot of the film I didn't remember that it took place in "New Manhattan". I assumed you were trying to imply that the plot of Akira was the same as Escape from New York. My apologies.

Taika Waititi's 'Akira' Sets 2021 Release Date

The film will open May 21, 2021.

Taika Waititi's Akira now has a release date.

The adaptation of the classic manga will open May 21, 2021, Warner Bros. announced Friday. Akira is set to open opposite Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter 4. Earlier this week, Warner Bros. moved its animated movie DC Super Pets off of the weekend, pushing it back a year to 2022.

Akira began life as a manga in 1982, with writer-artist Katsuhiro Otomo's cyberpunk series running through 1990. Otomo adapted the property as an anime feature in 1988. Set in postapocalyptic Tokyo, the original story revolves around a teen, Tetsuo, who discovers he has powerful telekinetic abilities that threaten the world. Once a member of a biker gang, the only person who seems to be able to stop the all-powerful and dangerous teen is his childhood friend and gang leader, Kaneda. The 1988 film is a pop culture staple and brought anime to a much wider audience in the U.S. Akira has been referenced in numerous TV shows and movies, including South Park.

A live-action Akira has long been discussed in Hollywood. Back in 2012, a version that would have starred Garrett Hedlund was shelved, with various filmmakers coming and going on the project that would have been an Americanized version of the story. Waititi is expected to go a more authentic route, stating back in 2017 that he would want to cast Asian actors in the roles.

Waititi has the dark comedy Jojo Rabbit due out Oct. 18. He is also among the directors who have helmed episodes for the Star Wars streaming series The Mandalorian, which debuts in November.

Leonardo DiCaprio is producing Akira though his Appian Way along with Andrew Lazar.

So basically the film will come out two years after the original Akira's dystopian future took place. Surreal. Also it never dawned on me until now how "futuristic" 2021 sounds.

Back to the Future was what, 2015? I feel so ripped off that we don't have hoverboards and flying cars.

Hollywood has butchered every anime adaptation they've attempted. I don't see why this would be any different. There are a few anime well-suited for Western adaptation, but they always get stuck in development hell.

I have no problem with it being set in "New Manhattan." The animated film is nearly perfect. I don't feel it was limited in anyway that a live-action film would do it better justice. These types of films seem to be more geared toward those that haven't seen the original. The brand recognition and the OG fans who will see it just give it an extra boost.

For me, I hope that they take enough liberties that the themes are clearly inspired by Akira, but it's not a shot-for-shot remake of the source material like Watchmen.
