Makoto Shinkai will be a guest at Comic Con in New York this October. I've seen THE PLACE PROMISED IN OUR EARLY DAYS (2004) and VOICES FROM A DISTANT STAR (2002), but didn't like either one on first viewing. I found them too self-consciously "arty." And a little on the pretentious side. I must give them a second chance, though. Sometimes these things take a few viewings to sink in.
