News: Arrietty U.S. Dub's Lead Actress Bridgit Mendler Named
posted on 2011-01-08 14:26 EST

Frank Marshall, a producer of the North American dub and theatrical release of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Ponyo film, revealed on his Twitter account on Friday that actress Bridgit Mendler is leading the American cast for Ghibli's latest film, Arrietty the Borrower. He noted that Mendler had already put in a full day of recording on Friday. Mendler stars in the Disney Channel series Good Luck Charlie, and she also played roles in Wizards of Waverly Place and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.

The movie adapted Mary Norton's 1952 fantasy novel The Borrowers about the "little people" — 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) tall — who live underneath the floorboards of a regular human family's house. Ghibli animator Hiromasa Yonebayashi made his directorial debut with the film, which was written by Miyazaki.

The film opened in Japan last July, and it was seen over 7.5 million times by October. Madman Entertainment already announced that it acquired the film for Australia.

Re: Arrietty the Borrower U.S. News

Jeez, about time! Why does it take so long to dub Ghibli films? Live action films have dubs (useless or not, depending on your tastes) as soon as it's on home video.

Arrietty was one of my favorite films of last year. Ghibli is back on top with this one. And some amazing sound design on it.

ARRIETTY will have a theatrical release in North America, no date set yet...
via Twitter
Rounding out the cast of ARRIETTY, voicing the human "beans" are David Henrie and Carol Burnett.
via Twitter
Beginning to record Arietty's parents, who will be voiced by Amy Poehler and Will Arnett. This should be fun...

I'd assume like the more recent Ghibli movies, they are keeping Dolby Digital 6.1 EX sound in business. Can't wait to see (and hear) this!

In the scenes with the little borrowers, they really enhanced the sounds to make even minor things like the refrigerator buzzing, water droplets, etc, and makes the audience really involved in their world.

News: Arrietty's U.S. Theatrical Run Set for February 2012
posted on 2011-01-27 08:01 EST

The film news website Deadline.com reported on Wednesday that Disney will release Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Studio Ghibli's Arrietty the Borrower film in North American theaters on February 17, 2012.

The movie originally opened in Japanese theaters last July with supervision by Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki. Even though 18 months will have passed between the Japanese opening and the American opening, the film can still qualify for eligibility in the 84th Annual Academy Awards in 2012 — provided that it screens for at least one week in a Los Angeles County theater in 2011.

The film re-imagines Mary Norton's 1952 novel The Borrowers by moving the story to a Tokyo suburb. The story revolves around Arrietty, a member of the "little people" who live under the floorboards of a regular human family's home, and their struggle to remain hidden from the human "beans."
Producer Frank Marshall revealed this month that Bridgit Mendler is voicing the title character. Joining her in the cast are Amy Poehler, Will Arnett, David Henrie, and Carol Burnett.

I'm really looking forward to this for some reason, like more than most Miyazaki films. I really liked The Littles when I was a kid, and I guess this really reminds me of that world.

I picked up a DVD of this--with English subs.!--two-and-a-half hours ago at a local Japanese video store. Looking it up on the web, it now says that Saoirse Ronan is dubbing the title role, not the actress listed in the earlier posts.

My confidence in Ghibli has been severely shaken after Earthsea an Ponyo.

I watched ARRIETTY last night. Sorry to say, but it's not going to revive your confidence.

It's got a lot of pretty pictures, but no real drama, no excitement whatsoever. And the protagonists are the dictionary definition of "bland."

I somewhat disagree - it's a simple story, should that be a deterent - no. I think if you have the patience and fan of 'My Neighbor Totoro' you'll get the tone and style of this film.

and as manicsounds pointed out the soundmix is really remarkable. Odd that for a new Ghibli film it's in standard 5.1 and not 6.1 but still, the sound design team really created a fantastic soundfield of natural sound - the rain, the rumble of thunder, an "earthquake" - (I'd love to hear a true 7.1 mix from the Ghibli sound designers)

Yeah, but TOTORO had Satsuki and Mei, two lively, engaging young heroines who share their sense of wonder with the audience. We see the world of Totoro through their widened eyes. ARIETTY has this bed-ridden boy protagonist who's one step up from catatonic. He doesn't react to anything; there's no sense of wonder.

Still, I'll give it a second chance and see it on the big screen when the opportunity arrives.

Saoirse Ronan is only doing the UK dub. The US dub will be Bridgit Mendler, as reported.

Re: Arrietty the Borrower U.S. News

That US trailer has too many spoilers....

I still don't get why it takes Disney a year and a half later to be released in America. So I guess 2013 would be the time "Poppy Hill" will come out in the states?

Re: (Studio Ghibli's) The Secret World of Arrietty

Normally these Ghibli films have a pretty good English dub. But based on the clips I've seen, this one's really disappointing. It seems like Disney was more interested in promoting their homegrown Disney Channel actors rather than putting together a good dub cast.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Pkhqfv2wOUs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Bridgit Mendler might not be too bad, but David Henrie sounds awful.

Note that there are two dubs for this one, the American and British. The British trailer doesn't have a lot of dialogue, but what there is sounds better than the American version (and more appropriate given that Mary Norton was English).

Re: Arrietty the Borrower U.S. News

Two online articles via Wall Street Journal:
...Marshall said they are already planning the next one: in about two weeks, Mr. Marshall will attend a meeting in Los Angeles to discuss Studio Ghibli’s next film, “From Up on Poppy Hill...”
...The film, which tells the story of tiny people who live beneath the floorboards of a house, has already grossed more than $126 million internationally, and will be released in the U.S. on Feb. 17...

...But Disney will open "Arrietty" on at least 1200 screens, in what will be its largest Ghibli release in the U.S. As comparison, "Ponyo" opened on about 900 screens, and "Spirited Away" opened on 750 screens...

...The 2009 film "Ponyo" grossed $15.1 million in the U.S. compared with $184 million internationally, according to Hollywood.com. In 2002, "Spirited Away" grossed $10 million in the U.S. compared with $264.9 million internationally...

Re: Arrietty the Borrower U.S. News

I saw a commercial for "The Secret World of Arrietty," as it's now called, this past Saturday on the Cartoon Network during Pokemon.

When the Pokemon movie came out in December there wasn't even a commercial for it during the Pokemon show.

Re: (Studio Ghibli's) The Secret World of Arrietty

Planning on taking my 4 year old to this on Sunday. She loves Totorro. I hear it's a great film but from the trailer my interest is really low. It reminds me of The Littles (a saturday morning cartoon I grew up with) and the live action Borrowers film that stunk. It just seems like a tired premis.

Re: (Studio Ghibli's) The Secret World of Arrietty

Forgive me, a newbie, for interjecting but I have to ask, why bother with Disney? "Arriety the Borrower" has been out on Bluray (region free)/DVD in Japan for over a year now. The BD/DVD has English subtitles and as always Japanese releases of Studio Ghibli fare are top notch. I always pre-order them usually at CDJapan or Amazon.co.jp, and have been doing so since Kiki's Delivery Service came out on DVD about 10 years ago.

Disney on the other hand has purposefully been delaying and downplaying Studio Ghibli productions for the past 10-15 years. To support them seems counterintuitive, especially for movie aficionados and especially that Japanese Studio Ghibli releases are always subtitled and the BDs are region free or same region as the USA.
