Tenchi Muyo OVA

I'd really like the Tenchi Muyo OVA, but the complete set is out of print. Any ideas as to where I could find one ? I'd like the version with the silver box that's listed on amazon.

Not really, no. There are a couple of these up on ebay, but that comes with the headaches of ebay. I looked around at a few sites but didn't find anything! This is a heck of a nice set, but it's been oop for long enough that most stores won't have any.

Has it been out of print for a while? This was one of the first DVDs I ever bought back in '99 (Amazon says the release date was July '00 but that doesn't seem right), and one of the few I kept in its original box. Damn, 11 years already!

It also kick started my short-lived anime addiction  (which lasted a few years, though I noticed almost everything I liked was from the 90s - Tenchi, Eva, Bebop, Trigun, Lain, Escaflowne, El Hazard, 3x3 Eyes, Macross Plus, Ninja Scroll, Mononoke Hime, etc; - never got around to giving the newer stuff a shot).

Same here Rich. Before the Tenchi OVA DVD I was just a casual anime fan and watched whatever came on Sci-Fi. The Tenchi OVA was my first ever DVD and it kickstarted my anime and DVD addiction at the same time!

Don't think it was our first, but it was certainly a tipping point into anime for the wife and I. (Actually, hers would be Robotech back in the 80's, but as far as really collecting it on DVD it was Tenchi Muyo and it was from seeing it on Cartoon Network. It's one of the few anime's we always watch with the dub since that's how we first saw it. That and Shin Chan).

How about the older stuff? '60s, '70s, '80s?

The 1980s was, for me, the golden age of anime (as you might discern from my list in the Anime on VHS thread). Not just Miyazaki's four masterpieces (NAUSICAA, LAPUTA, TOTORO, KIKI), but GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, BAREFOOT GEN, WICKED CITY, MIDNIGHT EYE GOKU, THE PROFESSIONAL: GOLGO 13, VAMPIRE PRINCESS MIYU, GUNBUSTER, DANCOUGAR, MACROSS, various GUNDAM series and movies, DAGGER OF KAMUI, KIMAGURE ORANGE ROAD, DRAGON BALL, CRUSHER JOE, URUSEI YATSURA, ARCADIA OF MY YOUTH, PHOENIX 2772, FIST OF THE NORTH STAR, RANMA 1/2, etc., etc., etc. You get the idea.

It's one of those "different things appealing to different people" things. I found myself enjoying the storylines and characters of the 90s era a bit more than 80s era, though it was no slouch itself. Both were superior to what was delivered in the '00s, imho. I was never big into the numerous endlessly long series (North Star, DBZ, Pokemon, Ranma 1/2, etc; ) I'm ashamed to say I hadn't heard of Golgo 13 until Queen Bee was shown late at night once on I think Cinemax. ... that was erm, something.

Pre-80s predates me a bit and I haven't fully played catch-up.

I think I paid like ... $100 for this set when it originally came out. Back when Pioneer Entertainment still owned it ("Can't you... see... I am a PIONEER" heh)

Definitely pick up the original OVA box if you can find it... it's fantastic! THX Certified with Japanese 5.1 sound. I can't think of any other anime series release since then that was THX Certified, lol.

Geneon came out later with single-disc releases but they did not have the 5.1 Japanese audio like the Pioneer box and were missing the special features in the boxset, iirc.

I still need to pick up the newer OVA set (TM Ryo-ohki!), but I've heard less than excellent reviews on that one (and the first episode didn't do much for me at all). The first OVA is my all-time favorite series... well, ever!

I have seen all of the Tenchi stuff except for the Ryo-ohki stuff because the reviews I have read are mostly negative.
