Do you think there will be 3D anime?
With all the hullabaloo about 3D technology, 3D blu-ray players, and 3D TVs, would you want to watch anime in 3D? If so, what current shows would you, or would you not, want to see?
Frankly I'd be pretty stoked to sit through a 3D rendition of Cowboy Bebop, but it would have to be in English. 3D subtitles would NOT be fun... T |
Re: Do you think there will be 3D anime?
Interesting question since so much of it is in cel

Re: Do you think there will be 3D anime?
hm of the shows currently out? I would definitely have to go with Last Exile. It being one of my if not my favorite show of all time, that goes without saying, but no one can deny how awesome it would be transferred into that technology. Also.. i wouldn't mind watching any of the Miyazaki stuff in 3D either. Thats just me though.

It's not cell anymore and hasn't been for over ten years. Anime is done digitally. They do the individual drawings on paper, whether with ink or pencil, I'm not sure. No colors. Then they scan the drawings into a computer and do all the rest on computer: linework, coloring, background art, shading, etc. It's still 2-D, but it's done digitally. Just look at any non-Ghibli anime from the last ten years and you'll see what I mean. Pay attention to the backgrounds and coloring. And then go back and look at older stuff, roughly pre-1997.

That's not just you man. Last Exile definitely sprang to mind as well as Miyazaki when I thought about this. I can just picture Totoro in 3D!

NVM. I totally miscomprehended this thread.

I am really not sure of the whole 3-d craze to tv yet.

Yes Totoro in 3D would be quite awesome. I am glad that there are people out there that appreciate how great Last Exile is though, many people I talk to call it boring..., and i watched it at least five times through and never found anything boring in it... so kudos for that.

I would like to see ghost in the shell in 3d

Re: Do you think there will be 3D anime?
well... i dunno if the films would make it over to the US. Something about a gigantic cinema tryign to fit even more gigantic bouncing breast close-ups might cause concern.
Ok, that's unfair.. most of the movies do not have the checklist of: 1) guy falls down onto girls crotch (or girl falls down onto guys face) 2) big boob girl vs little boob girl interaction 3) etc you know the drill... the same crap that is in 90% of animes... which are in turn, mostly crap. forgive my jaded opinions on anime.. i just find less and less to like about it the more i see =/ |

90% is quite an exaggeration. You've been seeing the wrong anime.
------------- You are correct: I made that number up on the spot. i don't know a way to say this without sounding like a snob, or an e-peen obsessed person, but I have seen a lot of anime... series, movies, ova etc... plus a lot of manga. Most of it is (was) fansubbed and covered many different genres... long series, short series, girl series, boy series, adolescent male, adolescent female, mecha, boy love, girl love, horror, harem, comedy etc.. pretty much the only things i tried to avoid were the Adult (porn) materials. and i feel that most of them were crappy. Some of them really do start off well.. and then they stretch on too long (like the author of 20th century boys/monster/Pluto, or Ranma 1/2), end up as a Ragnarok style mess (Gilgamesh) or etc........ Out of all them, I find there are very few that I find worthwhile. Most of them seem to come off an assembly-line and have a checklist they go through, repeating the same phrases, same situations and sometimes even the same plots that an editor may have felt was popular/successful in another show/manga. You read or watch enough stuff and you start to see the patterns and similarities all too clearly, just the way you would if you saw a lot of sci-fi shows, or comedy shows in the US. Actually, 90% is probably not a wrong number. Anime and manga DO roll off assembly lines in Japan. Most movies that come out of hollywood (for example) are garbage, too. Some have a few good elements in them, but I would not consider them good movies. A reviewer for Dvdtalk said Heroic Age was good. I thought it was god-awful, with the only (slightly) redeeming spark being the Princess, as i felt she was more of a character than Age. The setup of the different races/tribes sounded interesting, but all the characters (bar one) were annoying to deal with and the Bronze go from holy terror to laughable irrelevance after Age easily destroys two of their motherships in the first episode...they aren't even characterized or explained other than the one episode where the home planet is invaded, and you can only guess why they assist the Silvers. So again.. I know I sound like a douche, but that is not my intent (and I'm not one T_T). I do not assume I have seen more anime than any of you, but I do feel qualified to have my opinion based on the amount and spread of things I have read and watched. |

I do not assume I have seen more anime than any of you, but I do feel qualified to have my opinion based on the amount and spread of things I have read and watched. I think you should see more classic anime. Start with ten-15 years ago, the era of Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, Rurouni Kenshin, His and Her Circumstances, Tenchi Universe, Initial D, Boys Over Flowers, Street Fighter II-V, Whisper of the Heart, Princess Mononoke, Perfect Blue etc. 20 years ago...the era of Gunbuster, Wicked City, Akira, Crying Freeman, Patlabor, Vampire Princess Miyu, Only Yesterday... 25 years, when the Golden Age of OAV began (Dallos, Area 88, Bubblegum Crisis...) 30-odd years ago and the start of Gundam, GE999, Captain Harlock, Urusei Yatsura. 35 years ago and The Little Mermaid and Space Battleship Yamato. 50 years ago: Hakujaden, Shonen Sarutobi Sasuke, Anju to Zushiomaru, Saiyuki, etc... More recent: Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Steamboy, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Summer Wars, Mai Mai Miracle You get the idea. I get the sense from your post that you're more interested in the storyline than in the aesthetics or filmmaking genius of these works. It might not hurt to view anime as an art form and not just as a conduit for long storylines. There are always soap operas for that. |

It might not hurt to view anime as an art form and not just as a conduit for long storylines. There are always soap operas for that. I've seen a lot (though not all) of the stuff you mentioned. I do prefer the older material, though (like older Western cartoons, movies and tv shows) they seem far less complex than they could be (Star Trek in particular has has ludicrous interactions.. Kirk virtually destroys every civilization he encounters) they have nostalgic value. You've listed a lot of movies there, and I feel they are not immediately comparable to tv shows due to the larger amount of work that goes into the process, but I won't make a big deal of it. In my defense, the OP mentioned shows not movies, so considering the prevalence of bouncing boobs and panty shots in most shows (if i recall correctly, even Yamato had a perv robot flipping skirts) I fully expected that they would do leap at a chance to include those in any 3D productions.. probably a (gratingly annoying) nosebleed explosion, too. I'm sure the adult producers will make a killing, too. I don't begrudge them. watching anime for the art can be ok...as long as it's not shallow. Windy Tales is one I watched initially because of the art, and continued because the story was atypical. I watched Gilgamesh for the same reason, but disliked it in the end. Eva caught my eye mostly for the visual elements (such as the large screens at Nerv HQ), camera angles, frame composition and (imo) clever cost-saving devices they used for the animation. The elevator scene is classic. On the other hand, I get the feeling that what animators once did out of necessity has become overly associated with style, and now all work is done the same way.. with editors/producers likely not providing higher budgets because of it, and instead producing greater numbers of less quality material. yes, it is partially a stylistic thing with stillness, space, etc, but if you look at old Filmation cartoons they use the same cost-saving devices. And if you look at higher budget animes, they use less cost-saving devices and more movement... so to me, a lot of it seems to be time/money. I don't watch anime for long storylines, but rather (hopefully) good storylines. Legend of the Galactic heroes is a huge series that had a fantastic beginning.. it moved at a fair clip and felt like a mix of documentary, movie and reading one of those Time WWII books. Unfortunately, I feel that it dragged on a bit too long and a lot of standard stuff came into it, as well some glorification of war for what was initially a series that spoke of the folly of it. I've mentiond 20th Century Boys and Monster before, but I'll bring them up again as I consider them prime examples of stories that are stretched too long. In their defense, it's a case of the author over-weighting them with extra plot-lines for all the characters rather than not ending simply to exist (the case of Ranma 1/2). I'm sorry, i'm rambling....... I would love to take this to personal messages so we can debate particular anime or make suggestions on particular shows/movies that we recommend. As it is, I feel we're taking this thread off topic (mostly my fault). |

I wouldn't mind cel being done in 3D. For the right project, it could be cool.

Re: Do you think there will be 3D anime?
Regarding subtitles: Avatar actually had a fair amount of subtitles (when they are speaking the Navi language), and I didn't have a problem with it. In fact, with 3D, you can make the subtitles stand out more by placing them in front of the image.
