Prime Video Makes Play To Become “Preferred Destination For Anime Globally”

Prime Video has set out its stall to become “the preferred destination for anime content globally.”

Speaking at the first Prime Video Presents: International Originals online showcase today, Prime Video’s Vice President for APAC & ANZ, Gaurav Gandhi, highlighted a sample of anime shows from out of Japan coming this year on the Amazon streamer.

As he did so, he called anime “a category truly experiencing explosive growth,” and added: “Given that we are the home for the best anime in Japan, we want to become the preferred destination for anime content globally too.”

He pointed to three anime titles, including the reboot of Fist of the North Star: Hokuto No Ken, for which Prime Video has worldwide rights. The TMS Entertainment series reimagines the famous manga series on its 40th anniversary as an animated show combining CGI and hand-drawn animation.

“Few properties can match the cultural impact of Fist of the North Star,” said Gandhi.

Also previewed was The Ghost in the Shell, the cyberpunk series that explores the intersection of humanity and technology in a hyper-connected 2029 metropolis. Gandhi called the property, “The most influential Japanese sci-fi work of all time.”

Prime Video has worldwide rights except in Russia and China. In Japan, the streamer has has an early exclusive window.

The third title flagged was From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman Season 2. The first season ranked among Prime Video’s top ten titles in 45 countries. Gandhi said: “These titles show a commitment to bringing both visionary franchises and fresh voices to audiences.”

Later, Gandhi showcased several Korean series, focusing on romance-themed originals such as Marry My Husband and No Gain No Love that have cut through. “Korean romance resonates globally and has captured hearts around the world,” he said.

The 2026 slate will see the likes of Absolute Value of Romance, a meta romantic comedy starring Kim Hyang Gi and global K-pop idols; Human x Gumiho (working title), a supernatural romance led by Jun Ji Hyun (a.k.a Gianna Jun) and Ji Chang Wook; and Siren’s Kiss, a psychological thriller starring Park Min-young and Wi Hajun. Elsewhere, See You at Work Tomorrow! explores workplace romances.

As for Prime Video’s Indian service, Gandhi revealed that 25% of local content consumed “now comes from outside India.”

This section of the showcase saw a conversation between actress Alia Bhatt and Nikhil Madhok, Head of Originals at Prime Video India, during which they discussed authenticity and her her upcoming Prime Video original film Don’t Be Shy, female-focused coming-of-age drama written and directed by Sreeti Mukerji. Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt are producing under their Eternal Sunshine Productions banner.

“We can’t tell a story authentically if we don’t actually believe in it,” said Bhatt. “No voice can bring magic to your screen if it’s not coming from a very genuine place… Whether, it’s a movie or a TV show today, something about a scene, a character or a moment that stays, when that stays with you when you’ve on from the moment, there’s no greater impact.”

“When we look at APAC, there’s an extraordinary opportunity to take exceptional local content from multiple entertainment ecosystems across the region and bring it to the world,” said Gandhi. “There’s tremendous appetite for content from this region outside its home countries – whether it’s Japanese anime, Korean dramas, or Indian films and series.

“In fact, these are now amongst the most watched shows and movies outside their countries of origin on Prime Video. The opportunity is immense, and as a global service, we’re uniquely positioned to champion Asian content on the world stage.”

The Prime Video Presents showcase was held this morning in London, and featured the likes of Stanley Tucci, Nicole Wallace, Mercedes Ron, Park Min-young, Wi Hajun and Bhatt.

‘Ghost in the Shell’ Anime, Gianna Jun Drama Head Prime Video’s 2026 Asian Slate

A new “Ghost in the Shell” anime and a Gianna Jun-led supernatural romance headline Prime Video‘s 2026 Asian content lineup unveiled Thursday at the streamer’s inaugural International Originals showcase in London.

Gaurav Gandhi, VP of APAC and ANZ for Prime Video, presented the select titles from the broader Asia-Pacific slate during the event, which also featured Korean dramas including “Human x Gumiho” (working title), a supernatural romance starring Jun Ji-hyun (also known as Gianna Jun) and Ji Chang Wook, and an Indian original film from producer Alia Bhatt. Kelly Day, VP of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios International, and Nicole Clemens, VP of International Originals, hosted the presentation, with appearances from actors Stanley Tucci, Nicole Wallace, Park Min-young, Wi Hajun, Dolores Fonzi and Bhatt, along with author Mercedes Ron.

The streamer noted that content from Japan, Korea and India has achieved significant global viewership outside its English-language programming slate. The titles previewed represent a sampling of the full 2026 lineup, which will be announced in the coming months.

“The Ghost in the Shell,” the influential cyberpunk series exploring the intersection of humanity and technology in a hyper-connected 2029 metropolis, will stream exclusively worldwide on Prime Video (excluding Russia and China; in Japan, Prime Video holds an early exclusive window). The landmark franchise, which began with Shirow Masamune’s 1989 manga and has expanded across anime, live-action Hollywood film and video games, returns in July 2026 with a new anime series produced by Science SARU, the animation studio behind Golden Globe nominee “Inu-oh” and the anime television series “Dan Da Dan.”

A “Fist of the North Star: Hokuto No Ken” reboot, produced by TMS Entertainment, marks the franchise’s 40th anniversary and reimagines the globally recognized manga series with cutting-edge computer-generated imagery combined with hand-drawn animation.

The showcase also included “From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman” Season 2, following the first season’s success in reaching Prime Video’s Top 10 in over 45 territories.

Building on the success of “Marry My Husband” and “No Gain No Love,” both of which reached the platform’s global Top 10 based on out-of-country viewership, Prime Video previewed six Korean titles developed in collaboration with leading studios including CJ ENM, SLL, Coupang Play and others.

The Korean slate spans multiple genres. In addition to “Human x Gumiho,” titles include “Absolute Value of Romance,” a meta romantic comedy starring Kim Hyang Gi and global K-pop idols, and “Siren’s Kiss,” a psychological thriller starring Park Min-young and Wi Hajun.

Additional titles include workplace romance “See You at Work Tomorrow!”; “Love in Disguise,” starring Yim Siwan; and historical epic “The Sacred Jewel” (working title), set against the Mongol invasions of Goryeo.

The event included a preview of “Don’t Be Shy,” an upcoming Indian original film described as a young-adult, female-forward coming-of-age drama. Written and directed by Sreeti Mukerji, the project is produced by Bollywood star Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt under their Eternal Sunshine Productions banner.

Bhatt appeared in conversation with Nikhil Madhok, head of originals for Prime Video India, discussing filmmaking for young audiences and the importance of female-forward storytelling. Prime Video’s broader Indian content slate will be unveiled in March at Prime Video Presents India.

“Content from Japan, Korea, and India is emerging as a powerful cultural force in global entertainment, driven by emotionally authentic stories that resonate far beyond their home markets,” Gandhi said. “Building on strong viewer momentum and deep partnerships with creators across these regions, our 2026 lineup underscores our long-term commitment to championing Asian storytelling on the global stage.”

‘Terminator Zero’ Canceled After One Season at Netflix, Creator Reveals

The Netflix anime series “Terminator Zero” has been canceled after one season.

“The critical and audience reception to it was tremendous, but at the end of the day not nearly enough people watched it,” series creator Mattson Tomlin wrote on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. “I would’ve loved to deliver on the Future War I had planned in season’s 2 and 3, but I’m also very happy with how it feels contained as is.”

“Maybe someday I’ll do a big thread about the plans I had for the full five season run,” he continued. “The series finale was special and it was part of my pitch to get the job. I’ve written all of the season two scripts and outlined pretty much all of season three…Maybe I will return to that world in a different form. I really do love it, and it was extremely gratifying to see so many people connect with it the way they did.”

News that the series would not be returning is not altogether surprising, given that it originally debuted in August 2024 with no word on a renewal since then. Still, this is the first official confirmation that the project would not be back for Season 2.

Set in the “Terminator” universe established by the blockbuster film franchise, the logline for the show states, “Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children.”

The English language voice cast of the show included André Holland, Sonoya Mizuno, Sumalee Montano, Gideon Adlon, Armani Jackson, Carter Rockwood, Rosario Dawson, and Timothy Olyphant. The Japanese voice cast included Yūya Uchida, Toa Yukinari, Saori Hayami, Hiro Shimono, Miyuki Sato, Shizuka Ishigami, Atsumi Tanezaki, and Yasuhiro Mamiya.

Tomlin developed the series and served as showrunner and executive producer. Japanese animator Masashi Kudo directed the series. Additional executive producers included David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger via Skydance. Production IG was the animation studio.
