Studio Ghibli’s ‘When Marnie Was There’ Acquired By GKIDS

If you’re into animation, a new Studio Ghibli pic is always welcomed news. Today, GKIDS said it has picked up North American rights to When Marnie Was There. The indie distributor plans a spring theatrical release for an English-language version of the Hiromasa Yonebayashi-directed pic about friendship and discovery. Released in Japan last summer by the Hayao Miyazaki co-formed anime studio, the feature is based on Joan G. Robinson’s children’s novel from the 1980s.

The Marnie deal was put together by GKIDS founder Eric Beckman and Geoffrey Wexler from Studio Ghibli.

This, of course, is not the first time the two companies have worked together. GKIDS handles Stateside distribution for the highly valued the Studio Ghibli library. Among other projects, the two recently partnered on The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya. The first film directed by Ghibli’s other co-founder Isao Takahata in 14 years, Princess Kaguya is a favorite for snagging an Oscar nomination tomorrow in the Best Animated Feature category. Last year, Miyazaki’s publicly announced last animated feature The Wind Rises was up for the Oscar in the Best Animated category (the award went to Disney’s blockbuster Frozen).

GKIDS Acquires Ghibli’s ‘Marnie’ for North America

GKIDS continues its successful relationship with legendary Japanese toon house Studio Ghibli with a newly signed distribution agreement which will bring the animated feature When Marnie Was There (Omoide no Marnie) to North America. The deal includes all theatrical, non-theatrical, home video and television rights for the region. An English-language version is now in the works overseen by Ghibli and Geoffrey Wexler, slated for release this spring.

Directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi (The Secret World of Arrietty) and based on the children’s novel by British author Joan G. Robinson, the film tells the story of a troubled young girl named Anna who finds herself drawn to the abandoned Marsh House and the mysterious young girl named Marnie who appears in its window.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SENTAI FILMWORKS LICENSES
“STUDENT COUNCIL’S DISCRETION LV.2”

HOUSTON, January 15, 2015Sentai Filmworks is proud to announce its latest acquisition, Student Council’s Discretion Lv.2. The direct sequel to season 1 of Student Council’s Discretion, this comedy slice of life series with animation production by AIC made its debut online before being broadcast on television, and aims to tear down the 4th wall brick by brick.

Sometimes you have to think outside the box, but Hekiyo Academy’s Student Council may go a step further and rewrite their entire universe! At least, that’s what could happen as the second season gets underway and the Council decides that their own anime might need a little spicing up. Should they introduce new characters? Add a boy’s love subplot? Or should they just continue to do what worked previously and spend most of their time chattering between themselves while working towards odd goals that might turn out to have been a little misguided in retrospect? The answer is “yes” to all of the above and more: Class barriers and the fourth wall come tumbling down as a supporting character literally takes up the challenge of moving up to main character status. The plot thickens with the mystery of a missing cake. The boundaries of love between step-siblings get pushed just a few steps beyond what’s socially comfortable and there just has to be a hot springs episode, doesn’t there? Of course there does! Join 5 student council members in search of an author as the storyline runs amok in Student Council's Discretion Lv.2!

Student Council’s Discretion Lv.2 will be available soon through select digital outlets with a home video release to follow.

Re: Unreleased Licensed U.S. Anime Properties

Question for classic anime fans. If Discotek decided to start a pre-ordering system for certain classic titles that might not be released otherwise, would you be interested?

Details are still being discussed and no decision has been made yet. We are looking at possible options though. This would not be through a Kickstarter site but probably through the Discotek web site or another site made for this purpose. This would be a little bit different than a normal crowd funding project.

The basic idea is this:

We would put up a title to be released if pre-orders reach a certain amount.

Title will be released exclusively to purchasers from the web site for about 6 months and only available to buyers who pre-ordered in the first month.

After the 6 months it may be entered into normal distribution if sales are strong enough or it will be put out of print.

Everyone that pre-orders will get their name on the DVD credits as a supporter. The price will be the same for everyone that pre-orders.

There won’t be special tiers or extra prizes. This is just to get a show released and translated that normally wouldn’t be and at the same time include everyone that helped out.

We will keep the crowd funding price of the set down to a reasonable amount. Let’s say for example $60 for a 26 episode series to get it translated, authored, manufactured.

We would do it based on number of sets pre-ordered and not total dollar amount for the funding. We will keep the pre-order requirements lower to reach the goal easier so the success rate is higher.

We would potentially do two of these per year. One in the January-February area and one in the October-November area.

The anime would be something from the 1970’s, 1980’s, or even maybe the 1990’s. But it would remain titles that would not likely get a normal release. This would be mainly DVD only to keep costs down but we may possibly do a Blu Ray of something more obscure at some point using this method.

It's an interesting idea, though I really wonder how much of a market exists for older anime? A lot of those original fans have moved on from the genre.

NOZOMI ENTERTAINMENT Acquires
PLEASE TEACHER! and PLEASE TWINS!

GRIMES, IA, February 18, 2015 — Anime producer Nozomi Entertainment is excited to announce the acquisition of the PLEASE TEACHER! anime series and its sequel spinoff series, PLEASE TWINS!

Nozomi Entertainment will release Please Teacher! as a 13-episode DVD collection in the summer of 2015. Also known as Onegai Teacher!, Please Teacher! is directed by Yasunori Ide (Bastard!!) and features character designs by Hiroaki Gohda (Amagami SS; Love, Election and Chocolate) and animation by Daume (DearS, Strawberry Marshmallow, Shiki). Please Teacher! first aired in Japan on the WOWOW network in 2002 as a 12-episode TV series, with an OVA episode produced later that year. The series was later adapted into a manga series of the same name, as well as a light novel.

Please Twins! will be released by Nozomi Entertainment as a 13-episode DVD collection in the summer of 2015. Reuniting the same production team as Please Teacher!, Please Twins! originally aired in Japan on the WOWOW network in 2003 as a 12-episode TV series, with an OVA episode produced later that year. Also known as Onegai Twins!, Please Twins! tells a unique story about three teenagers unsure of whether or not they might be related. Though this spinoff focuses on new characters, many characters from Please Teacher! appear throughout the series. Please Twins! was later adapted into a light novel, as well as a single-volume manga.

About Please Teacher!:
Kei Kusanagi isn't your typical 15-year-old high school student. He's actually an 18-year-old with a rare disorder that puts him into what he calls, a "standstill"! When he was younger, this disorder left him in a deep coma which stunted his growth for three years. Mizuho Kazami isn't your typical teacher, either. She's actually an alien sent by the Galaxy Federation to observe the Earth! As the sole human being with knowledge of Ms. Kazumi's secret, Kei must... marry her?! Homework, dating, and a gorgeous wife - going to school has never been quite this fun!
About Please Twins!:
Maiku Kamishiro grew up in an orphanage with no history of his family or of his past. Left with only a childhood picture of himself and another person in front of a house, he believes that the other person in the picture is his long-lost twin sister. Upon discovering his old home, two young girls show up on his doorstep one day both claiming to be his long lost sister. Maiku's life is about to be turned upside down. With two pretty girls living under the same roof as him, how will Maiku be able to keep his mind on school and work while trying to figure out which one of these girls is his sister and which one is the love of his life?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SENTAI FILMWORKS LICENSES
“HAYATE THE COMBAT BUTLER: CUTIES”

HOUSTON, February 19, 2015Sentai Filmworks is proud to announce its latest acquisition, Hayate the Combat Butler: Cuties. Animated by Manglobe and directed by Masashi Kudo, this new entry into the Hayate the Combat Butler action comedy series always features a different heroine and even more twists.

Spring has come and love is in the air!

It’s never easy to be a gentleman’s gentleman, but working for a girl who’s not only not a gentleman but also a lightning rod for trouble (and not always particularly ladylike either) is a job that few butlers could handle. For Hayate Ayasaki, however, fighting off teenage heiress Nagi Sanzenin’s would-be kidnappers is as much a part of butlering as serving the tea. Nor is that the only dangerous activity that Hayate’s bound to be asked to perform during the course of the average day. Need to nurse everyone through an illness? Then that’s part of Hayate’s job description. Got an embarrassing video that has to be retrieved before it hits the internet or need help returning stolen money? Hayate’s your manservant! However, as competent as Hayate may seem, there’s one thing he’s not particularly good at: noticing when pretty girls are attracted to him. But that won’t stop the young ladies from trying to catch his eye, even as the art of domestic service becomes inexplicably intertwined with the martial arts! Hayate will sure have his hands full in the always-over-the-top romantic comedy that is Hayate the Combat Butler - Cuties!

Hayate the Combat Butler: Cuties will be available soon through select digital outlets with a home video release to follow.

Animated by POLYGON PICTURES and directed by Kobun Shizuno, this groundbreaking space opera depicts the last remnants of humanity as they struggle against an alien enemy in the cold vastness of space.

A thousand years after the alien Gauna destroyed the Earth, a small remnant of humanity still fights on to survive, fleeing on the gargantuan asteroid-based spaceship Sidonia. And, even though it’s been a century since the last encounter with the Gauna, military service is mandatory, with all those able enough enlisted to pilot the Garde robots that stand as Sidonia’s front line of defense. For Nagate Tanikaze, whose grandfather secretly hid him in the forgotten bowels of the spaceship, it’s a strange new world as he’s forced to come to the surface and join the ranks of defenders. Yet his recruitment comes just in time, for the Gauna have suddenly reappeared, and what could be man’s last battle will require every resource humanity has left. And what no one knows, yet, is that Nagate is not exactly what he seems, and a secret buried in his past may change the fate of ll mankind in KNIGHTS OF SIDONIA!
