REALLY?! I've been waiting almost forever to finally get Berusaiyu no Bara for the US home video release. It's a very fondly-remembered series for many older anime fans who remember its run on Japan's NTV in 1979-1980.

This scene, which has a basis in real life, was also done in Sofia Coppola's live-action film version of MARIE ANTOINETTE (2006), but it was much better done in the anime. In a class I taught on anime, I used both scenes, plus the manga version, to show how a historical event can be treated in anime, manga and live-action film.

Curious that the Press Release doesn't even mention Marie Antoinette, who's a major character in the series. I would think that would be a selling point.

Is there any word on whether the manga will ever be published in English?

In the blink of the mind’s eye, Ryota Sakamoto suddenly finds himself transported from playing the hit BTOOOM! video game to being stranded on a mysterious island, equipped with a day’s worth of provisions, a bag of bombs, a strange crystal embedded in his left hand and a huge gaping hole in his memory. But it doesn’t take long to figure out what’s going on, especially after the first person Ryota meets tries to kill him. SOMEONE is attempting to recreate the ultra-violent BTOOOM! game in real life, and the island has been filled with an army of other unwilling players, each armed with one of the multiple variants of explosive weapons called BIM. Fortunately, Ryota’s an ace BTOOOM! player, but this insane version of the game has no reset switch or second lives, and there’s only one way off the island: kill seven other people before they can kill you! Can Ryota repurpose his game based skills fast enough to survive? The action is ultra-violent, ultra-graphic and ultra-lethal as the ultimate blood sport is unleashed in BTOOOM!

BTOOOM! will be available soon through select digital outlets with a home video release to follow in 2013.

“BUSOU SHINKI”

HOUSTON, September 29, 2012 — Juggling four girls at once is never easy, even when they’re as small as the “goddesses” in Sentai Filmworks newest acquisition: Busou Shinki. Directed by Yasuhito Kikuchi (Infinite Stratos, Jo Jo’s Bizarre Adventures OVA) with series composition by Masahiro Yokotani (Sgt. Frog, Maria Holic) and character designs by Ryouma Ebata and Takahiro Kishida (BTOOOM!, Arjuna).

Some guys wait their entire life to meet the girl of their dreams, but high school freshman Rihito is already living with FOUR of them! And, even more incredibly, they’re (almost) always ready and willing to help him with whatever difficult task their “Master” needs to be handled. So, how did Rihito get to be so lucky? Well, to tell the truth, while Hinna, Anne, Ines and Rene may not be exactly high maintenance, Rihito DOES have to make sure that they get lubricated regularly and have their batteries recharged in a cradle. But that’s because they’re Shinki: tiny, 6-inch high, customizable androids that are now being sold all over the world. And don’t let their tiny size fool you. These little ladies have more than full-size intelligence and emotions, and since each one would prefer to be Rihito’s favorite, there’s sure to be a little mechanical friction! Get ready for sparks to fly as four battery powered princesses take charge of Rihito’s world in BUSOU SHINKI!

Busou Shinki will be available soon through select digital outlets with a home video release to follow in 2013.

“CHUNIBYO DEMO KOI GA SHITAI!”

HOUSTON, September 30, 2012 — They say love is blind, but apparently, it’s also stark, raving mad! Sentai Filmworks invites you to discover the truth for yourself in: Chunibyo Demo Koi ga Shitai! This 12 episode series about the foibles of young love features direction by Tatsuya Ishihara (Air, Clannad), series composition by Jukki Handa (Rozen Maiden, Campoine!), character designs by Kazumi Ikeda (Clannad, Kannon), sound direction by Yota Tsuruoka (A-Channel, ef ~ a tale of memories) and music byNijine (Hatsukoi Limited, Akikan!)

Yuta has a problem. First, Rikka has told him that they’re officially dating, but she’s… a little bit delusional. There’s also the fact that he used to be a little delusional himself, one of the thousands of Japanese students afflicted with “Chunibyo”, so desperate to stand out that they’ve literally convinced themselves that they have secret knowledge and hidden powers. Unfortunately, that’s not the main part of Yuta's problem. No, the REAL problem is that, even though HE’s no longer delusional, and Rikka MIGHT have been getting better, his OTHER female “friend,” Satone, his one true soul mate back when he was a chuuni, has ripped back into his life and she’s still epically and truly NUTS! How bad? Let’s just say that she prefers the name Sophia Ring SP Saturn VII; that she’s NOT happy that her partner in Chunibyo has cut her off; and that she’ll joyfully tear Yutta’s real world to pieces in order to get him back in her imaginary one! “Crazy in love” gets a whole new meaning as three fantasy worlds collide in Chunibyo Demo Koi ga Shitai!

Chunibyo Demo Koi ga Shitai! will be available soon through select digital outlets with a home video release to follow in 2013.

“GIRLS UND PANZER”

HOUSTON, September 30, 2012 — You’re cordially invited to find out if size really does matter in Sentai Filmworks’ newest acquisition: Girls und Panzer. Directed by Tsutomu Mizushima (Another, Blood-C) with series composition by Reiko Yoshida (K-ON!, Kaleido Star), sound direction by Yoshikazu Iwanami (The World God Only Knows, Hakuoki) and music by Shiroh Hamaguchi (TARI TARI, One Piece).

You may have heard of kung fu, but the girls at Oarai High School practice gun-fu - really, really BIG 75mm gun-fu, in fact. It’s called Sensha-do, and it’s the martial art of operating armored tanks! They take it seriously too, and since winning the national Sensha-do championship is such a huge deal at Oarai, they sometimes go to extreme ends in order to get the best students from Panzer class to sign up. Which is how Miho Nishizumi, who HATES operating tanks, gets drafted to join doomsday-driven driver Mako, even-triggered gunner Hana, highly receptive radio operator Saori and combustible tank-fangirl and loader Yukari as the incomparable Anko Team. They may not be on the half-track to fame and fortune, and maybe a few of them would rather shop for tank tops than become tops in tanks, but once their focus is locked and loaded, they’re absolutely driven. It’s mad, it’s metal and mayhem is guaranteed! So marching band and drill teams take cover, ‘cause the parade ground’s about to be rock and rolled under in the extra-curricular, armored vehicular spectacular that delivers in every particular: GIRLS UND PANZER!

Girls und Panzer will be available soon through select digital outlets with a home video release to follow in 2013.

“TO LOVE RU ~ DARKNESS”

HOUSTON, October 04, 2012 — Sentai Filmworks is proud to announce their latest acquisition: To Love Ru Darkness. The latest follow up to the hit series To Love Ru is directed by Atsushi Ootsuki (Ladies Versus Butlers!) with character designs by Yuichi Ouka (Over Drive TV).

As close encounters of the twisted kind between the residents of the planet Develuke (represented primarily by the female members of the royal family) and the inhabitants of Earth (represented mainly by one very exhausted Rito Yuki) continue to escalate, the situation spirals even further out of control. When junior princesses Nana and Momo transferred into Earth School where big sister Lala can (theoretically) keep an eye on them, things SHOULD be smooth sailing. But when Momo decides she’d like to “supplement” Rito’s relationship with Lala with a little “sisterly love,” you know Lala’s not going to waste any time splitting harems. Unfortunately, it’s just about that point that Yami, the Golden Darkness, enters the scene with all the subtleness of a supernova, along with an army of possessed high school students! All of which is certain to make Rito’s life suck more than a black hole at the family picnic. Unless, of course, a certain semi-demonic princess can apply a little of her Develukean Whoop Ass to exactly that portion of certain other heavenly bodies! It’s “Wham, bam, thank you, Space Ma’am” time once again in TO LOVE RU ~ DARKNESS!

To Love Ru ~ Darkness will be available soon through select digital outlets with a home video release to follow in 2013.

It seems that way. Maybe the license asking price has gone down and/or license availability has opened up more to North America. I personally really like this trend.

Iron Man Returns to Anime in Rise of Technovore

Marvel and Sony announce the return of Iron Man anime in 'Iron Man: Rise of Technovore,' on DVD spring 2013!

Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan announced today the return of iconic super hero, Iron Man, to the beloved world of anime in an all-new feature-length film, "Iron Man: Rise of Technovore." Produced by Madhouse and currently in production in Japan, the film is slated for release on DVD in the spring of 2013.

Directed by Hiroshi Hamasaki ("Shigurui," "TEXHNOLYZE"), with story by Brandon Auman ("The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!," "Iron Man: Armored Adventures"), the film explores a confrontation between Iron Man and the villainous Ezekiel Stane, who develops new bio-technology that seemingly outclasses the Iron Man armor. Re: Unreleased Licensed U.S. Anime Properties

Holy Sh!t!!!

Not even in my wildest dreams, did I see Mazinger Z being announced in North America. I almost pulled the trigger for the R3 Korean set a few years back but decided against it since it had no English subtitles.

I don't really care how much it cost, this is Day One purchase for me. Just hoping for good transfers and English subtitles please!!!

Re: Unreleased Licensed U.S. Anime Properties

Aniplex USA licensing Sword Art Online, this is the worst licensing news ever. Unless I can buy it for about $120 with an english dub.

I am not sure if I want to keep watching more episodes of Sword Art Online, This news totally ruined my weekend.
