FUNimation Entertainment Acquires the Fantasy Action Adventure Series Fairy Tail

Flower Mound, TX (April 22, 2011) - FUNimation(R) Entertainment today announced that it has acquired home entertainment, broadcast, digital, mobile and merchandise rights for the first 48 episodes of the magical anime series “Fairy Tail” from KODANSHA LTD.

Based on the manga of the same name by Hiro Mashima originally serialized in the Weekly Shonen Magazine published by KODANSHA LTD., the ongoing series is produced by A-1 Pictures and Satelight and directed by Shinji Ishihara.

The series follows the adventures of Lucy Heartfilia, a young girl who wants desperately to be a full-fledged mage. She runs away from home and towards the land of Fiore to join the most prestigious of all mage guilds in the world: the Fairy Tail Guild. Along the way, she meets Natsu Dragneel, a quirky teenage boy and practicitioner of the ancient Dragon Slayer magic. With his best friend, Happy the cat, beside him, Natsu is looking for his foster parent, a dragon named Igneel. They become a team and take on odd jobs for fame and profit. Epic adventures await!

FUNimation has begun production on the U.S. release and its English dub featuring actor Todd Haberkorn as Natsu. Tyler Walker is ADR Director.

The anime studio will release the complete series on DVD and Blu-ray later this year.

Re: Unreleased Licensed U.S. Anime Properties

Whoa!! FUNi actually got Fairy Tail?

Alas, it won't be a cheap box set though, because a full season is over 45 episodes long, unless FUNi splits it into two half-season box sets.

I think the big story will be who will get the US license for Puella Magi Madoka Magica, though. I expect an announcement probably by Anime Expo time.

There is no chance they will release one single boxset covering 48 episodes. The likely scenario would be 4 boxsets.

My guess is that the first season will be split into two half-season box sets. Which does remind me: has Fairy Tail been released on DVD in Japan, at least for the first season?

Yes. It looks like they are up to Volume 14 (eps. 53 - 56). There is no Japan Blu-ray releases and FWIW the series is upscaled.

Voltron: Defender of the Universe - New 'Legend Begins' DVD Seals Classic Media Deal, Has New Extras

No specific release date yet, but planned to be available with 2 months of the debut of the new Nicktoons continuation series, Voltron Force

World Events Productions has signed a new home video partnership with Classic Media, replacing the now-lapsed licensing agreement with Media Blasters (which resulted in the cancellation of plans for a Blu-ray Fleet of Doom release). With WEP's Voltron brand managers focused launching the new Voltron Force series on Nicktoons this June, the studio has also had to repeatedly push back their own in-house plans for a DVD release of the 1998 series, Voltron: The Third Dimension, which they originally hoped to have out last summer. They still intend to make that release happen, but there's no current timeline for it. In the meantime, Classic Media wants to get their DVD line going by taking fans back to where it all started!

This August (a specific date has not yet been announced), Classic Media and WEP will release Voltron: Defender of the Universe - The Legend Begins, with the first 7 episodes of the original classic '80s television show. Now, Classic is well aware that the original "Lion Force" show has been available on DVD before, both in premium releases and then in standardly-boxed releases. So this new item is mainly aimed at people who may have missed those previous sets, or at more casual (or budget-conscious) fans that didn't invest in those multi-disc collections, or to new fans who look into the original show after getting hooked on the upcoming Voltron Force series (which is a continuation of the classic "Lion Force" story!). But to entice passionate fans to look into the new title as well, Classic Media and WEP have started with a low price point of just $12.98 SRP, and are also including "colossal" bonus features, newly made for Voltron: Defender of the Universe - The Legend Begins:
  • Voltron 101 - An introduction to many of the elements that made the classic Voltron series such a hit in the 80's
  • Voltron Art Slide Show: An exclusive slideshow that features fan art and interpretations of the classic Voltron characters
  • Voltron Force Sizzle Reel: A peek at the new Voltron Force series which takes place 5 years after the classic series concluded
For those who wonder, there has been no mention of a Blu-ray Disc format release of this title, or anything else from Voltron, from the new Classic Media deal. It could happen at some point, but nothing's been announced. Package art for the new release has not been made available yet, but stay tuned for updates!

Re: Unreleased Licensed U.S. Anime Properties

http://beta.funimation.com/rojas/fun...ellyfish/83956

Flower Mound, Texas (May 12, 2011) – Following the exclusive U.S. simulcast of the Fall 2010 noitaminA block series “Princess Jellyfish” (“Kuragehime’) in February, FUNimation Entertainment asked fans on its Facebook page what they thought of the series and whether they would purchase the series should it be offered on DVD or Blu-ray.

The resulting response was an overwhelming “Yes, please!”:

Today, FUNimation Entertainment announced that it has also acquired the U.S. home entertainment, broadcast, digital and merchandise rights from Fuji Television and will release the series on DVD and Blu-ray in 2012.

“Princess Jellyfish” is a romantic-comedy based on the award-winning manga by Akiko Higashimura. Animation for the series is done by Brain’s Base (“Spice and Wolf II”, “Baccano!”) and is directed by Takahiro Omori (“Baccano!,” “Hell Girl,” and “Durarara!!”). The story follows Tsukimi and her wallflower friends who are hopeless nerds with bizarre hobbies. Their crippling social anxieties keep them from setting foot outside the all-girl apartment complex they inhabit, but a late night jellyfish rescue mission and the arrival of a “Stylish Girl” turn their lives upside down!

SENTAI FILMWORKS ANNOUNCES LICENSE of “AMAGAMI SS”

HOUSTON, MAY 21, 2011—Sentai Filmworks today announced its acquisition of the animated romantic omnibus AMAGAMI SS. Based on Enterbrain’s (KIMIKISS) hit dating simulation game for the PS2, and produced by Enterbrain themselvess in cooperation with animation by the legendary AIC (Ah! My Goddess, Angel Beats, Bubblegum Crisis, Tenchi Muyo,), the 26 episode series, which includes two bonus episodes, was directed and co-written by Yoshimasa Hiraike and takes a truly unique spin in its adaptation from the original material. Daring to go where few anime based on role-playing games games have dared, AMAGAMI SS eschews the traditional practice of focusing on a handful of characters and instead presents multiple storylines that follow the paths of each of the potential romantic relationships in the original games as a series of separate, alternate stories rather than a single hybrid story.

When his date stood him up on Christmas Eve two years ago, Junichi Tachibana felt a little piece inside him shrivel up and die. Now he distrusts the very idea of love, which is a shame because Karma is about to hit him back in a MAJOR way. You see, there are SEVERAL girls who would all make wonderful partners for Junichi if he would only open his eyes. Are you ready for a half-dozen or more romances, all at the same time? Neither is Junichi, so through the miracle of animation, you’re about to see how each of those individual romances would have played out if someone had done just the right thing at the right time, as the guy without a date’s luck goes from bad to multi-verse in AMAGAMI SS!

Look for AMAGAMI SS subtitled on DVD this autumn, available at traditional and digital retailers everywhere.

SENTAI FILMWORKS ANNOUNCES LICENSE of “MM!”

HOUSTON, MAY 21, 2011—Sentai Filmworks today announced its acquisition of MM! (pronounced Emu! Emu!) the outrageous new animated series comedy that takes a decidedly different bent when it comes to looking at people of a decidedly different bent. Based on the twelve novel series of the same name by the late Akinari Mitsuno, and subsequent manga adaptation illustrated by Issei Hyoujyu with character designs by QP: Flapper, the new series features direction by Tsuyoshi Nagasawa (storyboards for To Loveru), and follows the adventures of a character who discovers that, while he, himself, might be a masochist, there are other people he knows with equally life affecting fixations.

There are twisted tales and twisted tales, but few are as twisted as poor Sado’s, who’s just realized that he LIKES being made miserable. Of course, knowing that only makes him more miserable, which in turn… Well, you get the idea. Desperate to break the circle, Sado volunteers for a special club where he hopes he can work through his issues, only to discover that the other members have equally complex issues to deal with. The hyper-aggressive club president Isurugi, for example, not only has a violent fear of cats, but also believes herself to be a god! Then there’s Yuno, who’s terrified of men; the Nurse, who forces other people to perform cosplay; and Hayama, who’s not only Sado’s best friend and a compulsive cross-dresser, but also the girl that Sado is infatuated with. (We did say it was complex.) If you think you’ve seen EVERYTHING that can happen in an anime, strap in for a spin on the newest rollercoaster ride in town with MM!

If you’re looking for something just a little unusual (we’d say off the “beaten” path, but that’s not exactly correct for Sado) be on the lookout for MM! Available subtitled in English via both DVD and digital retailers this September.

MAIDEN JAPAN ANNOUNCES LICENSE OF GLASS MAIDEN

HOUSTON, June 6th, 2011—Maiden Japan today announced its acquisition of Glass Maiden, the 12 episode science fiction/detective anime series directed by Mitsuko Kase (SaiKano, MS Gundam 08th Team: Miller’s Report) with character designs by Hisashi Kagawa (SaiKano, Pokemon 3.) Created specifically for broadcast, Glass Maiden fuses elements from a wide variety of genres as a small detective agency finds itself aiding a series of intelligent weapons built into feminine forms fight for their independence against a force that intends to enslave them.

Shu’s a detective, the brooding, enigmatic type with an eye for the ladies. Together with his kid brother Akira, and ‘the girls’ Manami and Ayaka, he runs an investigative agency that takes on odd cases. But when the oddest case of all comes through: a ‘package’ intended for ‘delivery,’ it turns out to be a lot more trouble than expected. Shu’s always considered himself a quick study (he can see through most lies in a second), but when he goes head on with a girl who doesn’t even know who she is, he’ll be seeing through more than he ever imagined seeing through. Unfortunately, there are other people who want Sara back and they know a lot more about who, and what, she actually is than she does! Old fashioned detective work meets the latest in modern weapons technology as sci-fi meets private eye in Glass Maiden!

Maiden Japan will be distributing Glass Maiden in conjunction with home video distributor Section23 Films (Clannad, High School of the Dead, Appleseed,) with the entire series to be released in both English Subtitled DVD and Digital Formats.

Hadn't noticed until now the licensing of MM! It's a bit on the ecchi side, but it's one of the funniest anime I've ever watched. Will definitely be picking it up.

SENTAI FILMWORKS ANNOUNCES
LICENSE of “MARDOCK SCRAMBLE”

HOUSTON, June 20, 2011—Sentai Filmworks today announced the licensing of MARDOCK SCRAMBLE, a spectacular new trilogy of animated features based on the original novel by Tow Ubukata (Le Chevalier D’Eon.) An ultraviolent new franchise in which a murdered girl is transformed into a cybernetic grim reaper, the first film in the series will be directed by Susumu Kudo (He Is My Master, Mirage of Blaze) from screenplays by Ubutaka himself and with character designs by Jun Nakai (Sacred Blacksmith, Tokyo Majin) and Shingo Suzuki (Princess Lover.)

To stop the unstoppable you need the irresistible. To kill the unkillable, you need someone for whom death no longer has a meaning. And to catch the perfect serial killer, you need the one person who knows his methods the best… his last victim! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MAIDEN JAPAN ANNOUNCES LICENSE OF HIMAWARI!

HOUSTON, June 23, 2011— Entertainment label Maiden Japan today announced its acquisition of the hit animated series HIMAWARI! Based on the teenage ninja manga sensation from the writer/artist team of GoDO and Tagro, HIMAWARI! was directed by Shigenori Kageyama (Fist of the North Star) with script supervision by Mamiko Ikeda (Sgt. Frog, Emma- A Victorian Romance) and character designs by Okama (Evangelion 1.0 & 2.0,) and Seiji Kishimoto (Elfen Lied, Cat Girl Nuku Nuku.)

Ever since being rescued by a ninja when she was younger, Himawari Hinata’s greatest ambition has been to become one herself. Now, finally, she’s got her chance to study at Shinobi Gakuen, the elite academy where female ninja are trained! Unfortunately, Himawari isn’t as prepared as some of her fellow candidates and on her very first day she ends up being saved by one of her teachers. To the embarrassment, the person who rescues her isn’t even a ninja! He’s Hayato Marikoji and HIS duty is to teach the ninja how to act like a normal person like himself! With that inauspicious start, will Himawari ever be able to gain entrance to the school? And if she does, can she meet the rigorous standards demanded by her teachers? And why does Hayato remind her so much of an important person from her past? With a whole school full of ninjas, there’s certain to be more going on than meets the eye in HIMAWARI!

Maiden Japan will be distributing HIMAWARI! in conjunction with home video distributor Section23 (Clannad, High School of the Dead, Appleseed,) with the entire series to be released in both English Subtitled DVD and Digital Formats.

BAKUMAN ANIME COMING TO DVD COURTESY OF MEDIA BLASTERS AND ANIME WORKS

Media Blasters is pleased to announce the acquisition of the hit ANIME series BAKUMAN, the latest from the creators of the mega-hit DEATH NOTE! Joining the ranks of nerd culture shows like GENSHIKEN, Bakuman. will see its first release this year under the AnimeWorks label. BAKUMAN part one will launch in November on DVD, containing an English language dub and episodes 1-7.

The Bakuman. manga (Viz Media) has already launched in the United States, landing at number 6 on the New York Times Graphic Books Manga list and remaining on the list for eight straight weeks. In Japan, BAKUMAN consistently places on the top ten of all comic sales, and has even become an international hit, seeing strong releases in France, Spain, Germany, Canada, Australia, Korea and Taiwan.

The anime series BAKUMAN was created by writer TSUGUMI OHBA and artist TAKESHI OBATA, the team responsible for the hit comic, TV and movie franchise DEATH NOTE. BAKUMAN is a far cry from that supernatural thriller, instead it's the semi-autobiographical tale of an artist and writer team trying to make it in the brutal Japanese anime and manga industry! The genius of Ohba and Obata shines in this compelling race through the world of publishing, from the very bottom to the very top. Not content with showing glimpses into the industry, they go for all-out panoramic views packed with insider details. Anyone who's interested in anime and manga or has dreams of working in comics and animation needs to see BAKUMAN!

Brilliant but psychologically off-balance characters? A crazy premise that somehow manages to work? Homoerotic overtones? Hey, this is exactly like Death Note! But in all seriousness, it looks like Ohba and Obata are on their way to another hit.... A slice-of-life chronicle about the dreams of youth. --Carlo Santos, Anime News Network
Ohba and Obata provide a remarkable behind-the-scenes of the manga industry... an extremely polished, consistent, and gorgeously illustrated series! --Christopher Butcher, comics212.net
