GKIDS Acquires North American Rights To Acclaimed Director Mamoru Oshii’s Seminal Classic “ANGEL’S EGG”

GKIDS TO BRING NEW 4K RESTORATION OF OSHII’S RARELY SCREENED EARLY FEATURE TO CINEMAS FOR 40th ANNIVERSARY IN FIRST EVER NORTH AMERICAN NATIONWIDE RELEASE

GKIDS, the Academy Award®-winning producer and distributor of acclaimed and artist-driven animation from around the world, announced today it has acquired all rights for North America to Mamoru Oshii’s early masterpiece ANGEL’S EGG. Forty years after the film’s original release, GKIDS is proud to present an all-new 4K restoration of the film, which is being supervised by director Oshii, in cinemas nationwide for the first time next year.

First released directly to home video in 1985, the film is a creative collaboration between internationally acclaimed director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell), who wrote and directed the feature, and revered artist Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D). The film beautifully intertwines Oshii’s thematic reflections on philosophy and theology, with Amano’s distinctive ink painting style, culminating in an arrestingly beautiful hand-drawn allegorical fantasy.

The deal was negotiated in Cannes between Rodney Uhler of GKIDS and Jason Bressand of Gebeka International (a Hildegarde – Goodfellas Company). The film marks the next collaboration between GKIDS and director Oshii, following GKIDS release of the new 4K restoration of Oshii’s classic Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, which arrives in US cinemas next month.

“Angel’s Egg has long been a cult classic, an object of fascination among dedicated animation fans,” said GKIDS’ President David Jesteadt. “After almost forty years, this masterpiece retains all of its beauty and power, and we are thrilled to do our part in bringing the film to a new generation of audiences in the way it deserves to be seen.”

Synopsis:
In an underwater city, a young girl takes care of a large egg she holds carefully in her arms – a treasure that she believes is an angel’s egg. A boy with a gun arrives in search of a bird he saw in his dream. At first it seems as if feelings of sympathy are developing between the two. Then, one night, the boy crushes her precious egg.

A 1992 theatrical compilation produced by Speed Racer Enterprises and Streamline Pictures—one of the pioneering American distributors of English dubbed anime, including Akira and early Miyazaki—Speed Racer: The Movie links together multiple episodes from the iconic Americanized version of the 1960s anime. An early example of the success of Japanese animation in the United States, Speed Racer was notable for its rapid-fire, fast-paced dialogue (meant to match the quick lip movements of the anime) which was produced locally by New York-based dubbing studio Titra Studios and featured the vocal talents of Corinne Orr (Trixie, Spritle, Mom) and Peter Fernandez—who not only voiced the titular Speed Racer, but served as the series’ co-writer and voice director. Struck from the original Japanese 35mm masters and interspersed with ad breaks filled with period commercials, this theatrical re-release selects two of the show’s most absurd adventures: The Car Hater and The Race Against the Mammoth Car. Competing in auto races across the world, Speed, Trixie and the gang go head-to-head with an embittered man on horseback who forbids his daughter from driving and a massive segmented car in the No-Limits World Race—aided, of course, by the powerful Mach 5, the “most fabulous car ever driven.”

2.5 Dimensional Seduction is adapted from the currently 19-volume-long manga title created by Yu Hashimoto that launched in June 2019 and is serialized in Shueisha's Shonen Jump+. The Highly Anticipated New Series from Studio Science SARU Based on the Popular Shonen Jump Manga

GKIDS, the Academy Award®-winning producer and distributor of artist-driven and award-winning animation, announced today that it has acquired theatrical, videogram, and digital transactional rights to the highly anticipated new anime series DAN DA DAN. The acquisition serves as GKIDS’ first engagement with a first-run series, following North American distribution of various famed retrospective series work. GKIDS will announce further details in the coming months.

With production from the acclaimed animation studio Science SARU (DEVILMAN crybaby, INU-OH, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, The Colors Within), the series is the directorial debut of studio veteran Fuga Yamashiro (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, The Heike Story). Composer kensuke ushio (Chainsaw Man, DEVILMAN crybaby, The Colors Within) additionally joins the production for the score. The series is a television adaptation of author Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga of the same name, which is currently serialized in the wildly popular “Shonen Jump Plus” BY SHUEISHA, under the globally beloved Shonen Jump imprint. Yukinobu Tatsu, the author, previously worked as an assistant to Tatsuki Fujimoto on his global hit series “Chainsaw Man” and “Fire Punch,” and Yuji Kaku on “Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku.”

Conceived as a love letter to genre film, B-movies, and retro sci-fi works, DAN DA DAN follows the story of a high school girl named Momo who is from a family of spirit mediums, and Okarun, a high school boy who is an occult freak. As the two compete to disprove the existence of the other’s passion, they get caught up in an encounter of both the spiritual and paranormal, imbuing both teenagers with powers beyond belief.

DAN DA DAN marks GKIDS’ sixth title from visionary studio Science SARU, following local releases of Lu Over the Wall, The Night is Short, Walk On Girl, Ride Your Wave, the Golden Globe®-nominated INU-OH, and GKIDS’ most recent acquisition, The Colors Within.

Synopsis

DAN DA DAN follows Momo, a high school girl from a family of spirit mediums, and her classmate Okarun, an occult freak. The two of them start talking after Momo rescues Okarun from getting bullied. However, an argument ensues between them – Momo believes in ghosts but denies aliens, and Okarun believes in aliens but denies ghosts. To make the mutual deniers believe in each other, Momo goes to an abandoned hospital known for its UFO sightings, and Okarun goes to a tunnel that is said to be haunted. In each place, they encounter overwhelming paranormal activity that transcends comprehension. Amid these predicaments, Momo awakens her hidden power and Okarun gains the power of a curse to challenge the paranormal forces! Their fateful love begins as well!?

‘Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ Debuts 20 Minutes of Epic Footage at Annecy, Introducing a Headstrong Princess Héra of Rohan

Warner Bros. Animation, New Line Cinema and Sola Entertainment previewed 20 minutes of its upcoming anime feature “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” receiving thunderous applause during the packed presentation on Tuesday at the Annecy Animation Festival.

Director Kenji Kamiyana said he was inspired by not just J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” books, but by the films of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, who were confirmed as exec producers of the movie during the session.

The new story is set nearly 200 years before Bilbo Baggins comes into contact with the ring of power, and centers on the House of Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan (voiced by Brian Cox), with a focus on his daughter, the strong willed Princess Héra (voiced by Gaia Wise). In the clip, a dispute erupts during a council meeting, leaving Wulf, a ruthless Dunlending lord, seeking vengeance. Miranda Otto reprises her “Lord of the Rings” role as Éowyn, this time as the movie’s narrator.

“There is such power to the story,” said Kamiyama (whose credits include the TV series “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” and “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex”), assisted by a translator. He was joined in the highly anticipated session by producers Philippa Boyens (who also co-wrote the story), Jason DeMarco and Joseph Chou, in conversation with Andy Serkis.

DeMarco emphasized that with the stylish anime look, the filmmakers didn’t set out to make an animated Peter Jackson movie. Rather, they wanted to make a Kamiyama movie.

“The fans are going to go nuts for this,” enthused Serkis, who will reprise his role as Gollum in “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” which he will also direct. During the session he also teased his performance-capture based retelling of “Animal Farm,” which he is directing, saying it’s a contemporary take on George Orwell’s classic novel.

“Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” opens in North America on Dec. 13 and internationally beginning Dec. 11.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle Movie Trilogy Announced

Crunchyroll, Sony Pictures Entertainment will distribute the three-part film series in theaters worldwide (excluding select Asian territories)

Following the final episode of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc in Japan, the series’ official accounts revealed that a Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle movie trilogy will be released, adapting the final arc of the popular manga series into anime.

In addition, Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that they had acquired the trilogy of movies for a global theatrical release excluding select Asian territories and Japan. No release date was confirmed at the time of reporting.

[ SYNOPSIS ]
Spring break, an interval of time between the second and third year of high school.
Koyomi Araragi encounters a blood-chillingly beautiful woman. The iron-blooded, hot-blooded, cold-blooded Vampire, she calls herself “Kiss-shot Acerola-orion Heart-under-blade.”

On the brink of death after losing her four limbs, she asks Koyomi to save her. After experiencing fear, chaos, and finally conflict, Koyomi gives his own blood in order to save her.
But when he awakens, he finds himself re-born as her vampire kin.

Koyomi wishes to revert to being a human from a vampire. However, he must take back all of Kiss-shot’s limbs to do so. Working as a negotiator, Meme Oshino stands in middle ground as Koyomi attempts to recapture her four limbs by challenging three powerful vampire hunters.

This hellish spring break, the final one of his high school life, is only just beginning.

This is the story of a boy, and it all begins with the downfall of the Kamakura shogunate.

The Elusive Samurai is a spectacular historical manga brought to audiences by Yusei Matsui, previously known for his work in Neuro: Supernatural Detective and Assassination Classroom. This new series finally comes animated to TV screens after a popular serialized run in WEEKLY JUMP.

After the downfall of the Kamakura shogunate, Tokiyuki Hojo finds himself a survivor in the Hojo clan. Now, he must make his way to survive by fleeing in this time of turmoil.

The series has a unique set of talented staff working on the anime. CloverWorks, known for their work on BOCCHI THE ROCK!, will be in charge of animation production, while Yuta Yamazaki, known for his work as assistant director for WONDER EGG PRIORITY, is set to direct. Yoriko Tomita, known for her work on My Dress-Up Darling, will be in charge of the series composition, while Yasushi Nishiya, the chief animation director for Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, is set to work on character designs.

This super team of talented staff will spin this historical tale to come alive on screens with beautiful and impressive visuals for all to see!

After the conclusion of the TRIGUN STAMPEDE anime shared the promise of a "Final Phase" on the horizon, we now know the official title of the upcoming series. Announced today at theTRIGUN STAMPEDE panel, presented by Crunchyroll and Orange, the new series title was revealed as TRIGUN STARGAZE.
