Yes, Warriors of the Wind is anime. It's a cut-down version of Miyazaki's Nausicaa, but it's still anime. There isn't a single frame of anything else in it. That's all Miyazaki's footage in it.

Nice to see some love for THE HAKKENDEN, an uneven but greatly underrated series. Based on the same story adapted for the live-action films directed by Kinji Fukasaku, MESSAGE FROM SPACE (1978) and LEGEND OF THE EIGHT SAMURAI (1983).

I won't go into the specifics for films other than to state I love all of Miyazaki's work (Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke being my favorites), Satoshi Kon's (especially Tokyo Godfathers), and Akira, Memories, and Metropolis all come immediately to mind.
Cowboy Bebop is definitely still my number one. I still have a number of acclaimed anime classics I need to see, and I haven't finished Yu Yu Hakusho yet, but I'm fairly confident these properly represent my current favorites.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is so far the most over-rated anime I have ever seen.

Here are my favorites on a one-season basis:
Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon S (third season of this series, with easily the best stories on a per-episode basis)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (despite the weird ending--it literally redefined giant robot anime)
The Vision of Escaflowne (great storytelling, probably one of the best series Sunrise ever done)
Slayers NEXT (the best of the TV seasons of Slayers released in the USA)
Romeo x Juliet (my favorite of the Gonzo-animated TV series so far)

These were the first that I remember seeing (this is heavily influenced by the robot genre, which unfortunately does not seem very popular here). As a kid, I understood a very small amount of Japanese, but watching these raw without subtitles is what got me into anime:
Mazinger Z (1973), which actually was shown before I was born, but which I loved because of the toys and the sequels (Great Mazinger, Grendizer). Finally released in 1985 as Tranzor Z here. A remake is airing now.
Superdimensional Fortress Macross (1982). Loved the mecha so much that I didn't even notice the changes Macek made when this was released as the first part of Robotech in 1985
Neon Genesis Evangelion: I remember buying the subbed tapes, two or so episodes at a time, eagerly awaiting each new release. That last tape was a letdown, I won't lie, and I still have never watched either of the movies.
My Neighbor Totoro: perhaps not the best Miyazaki film, but still my favorite.

In regards to movies, I agree with your assessment of My Neighbour Totoro. For some reason, I find the movie so endearing and is my favorite Miyazaki film.

The first episode of Berserk is a glimpse of the future. All of the other episodes take place before the first episode. You should watch a few more episodes.
Honestly, I wasn't impressed by the first episode either the first time I watched Berserk. I think I rented the first disc from Blockbuster, watched the first episode, and then returned it. But then I gave it a second chance.

Sticking to just one Miyazaki movie, the best anime I've seen:
Movies:
1. Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (which I prefer to 1 for some reason. Long winded and prone to falling into diversions on philosophy and pretentious meanderings, but almost hallucinogenically pretty to look at, has amazing action and a great story.)
2. Akira (which is actually a bit of a mess and really makes no sense but still works. It's sort of the Blade Runner of anime. Like Blade Runner, it's also still amazing looking after twenty years+).
3. Spirited Away (Miyazaki's best, IMO. A straight-up masterpiece)
4. Jin - Roh : The Wolf Brigade (uneven pacing, but has a compelling plot and has an absolutely terrific ending. Also, very underrated washed-out hand drawn artwork in this one)
5. Metropolis (visually overwhelming and oddly moving at times. The plot is overly complicated in a typically otaku way, but the strong story keeps moving forward)
TV shows:
1. Cowboy Bebop (the only TV show I've ever watched in its entirety. Funny, moving, exciting, compelling. Great characters, great artwork, great design. Even the movie was pretty damned good.)
...I need to watch more TV shows. The problem is that so many are blatantly made for kids. I've also been subjected to a bunch of crap and I'm not really a mecha fan (anymore, I was when I was a kid). I don't know what to get. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My favorites:
1.- Sailor Moon (re-introduced me to anime as an adult after I had grown out of it; flawed but I cannot think of another anime property that has made me cry, laugh and enjoy spending time with the characters... except for "Super S," boy did that season stink!).
2.- Cardcaptor Sakura (CLAMP animation/storytelling at its most simple, universally appealing basic; like "Pokemon" but with character development).
3.- Mazinger Z (as a kid growing up the original series was boss... no pun intended
; subsequent 'Mazinger' series sucked donkey nuts!)
4.- Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (metrosexual Zoltar was one heck of a bad guy; it's impossible to even think of the "Battle of the Planets" butchery after seeing ADV's original version).
5.- Heidi Girl of the Alps (I grew up watching this and "Candy, Candy" coming home from school; just thinking of Heidi reuniting with her Grandpa after her time in the city makes me teary-eyed).
6.- Candy, Candy (World War I as a soap opera from the POV of an orphan girl growing up in a crazy world; yes, I was a Candy-Albert shipper and didn't even know it at the time).
7.- Ranma 1/2 (seeing how the characters never evolved or wised-up from the previous episodes' lessons was half the fun of watching this; dumb one-dimensional fun).
Honorable mentions to the original "Slayers" and "Dominion Tank Police."
Movies I don't feel as strong an attachment as TV series: "Ghost in the Shell" (haven't seen "Innocence" yet), "Akira" (OK but confusing), "Metropolis" (changed the way I hear Ray Charles but didn't really like it) and a ton of Miyazaki flicks that are OK but haven't really done anything for me ("Howl's Moving Castle," "Spirited Away," etc.). For better or worse my perception of anime is that of a serialized series of TV/OVA episodes telling stories over lengthy, extended arcs (something a 90 min. or so feature can't do).
