So this is going to be from the same masters as the previous release, right? I don't care that much about an additional dub (at least not enough to double dip if that's the only thing going for it).

Isn't that only because many of their Blu-Rays are upconversions? Akira should be from a 1080p or better source.

There are only 2 English dubs. It should read 3 audio tracks. 2 English and 1 Japanese.

Does anyone know if all the features/specs from the 2001 DVD Special Edition are carried over to the new Blu-Ray release?

Didn't know where else to post this, but AKIRA apparently predicted Tokyo getting the 2020 Olympics:

So both Best Buy and Fry's stock so much anime, a lot of it pretty obscure, and yet they can't be arsed to stock Akira? What a bunch of bullshit.

Best Buy has been known now to make retarded decisions of not putting classics newly released on blu onto their shelves. There is absolutely no common sense except them being guilty of thinking the customer only wants new movies.

Re: AKIRA coming to Blu-Ray in February 2009; re-released by FUNimation in November 2
I popped the blu-ray in the player last night and just randomly selected a chapter after putting on the original 1988 dub, and like magic, I instantly was able to recite the dialogue as they were saying it; every inflection, pause and vocal nuiance flooded back to me like when I was 14 and seeing it over and over again in 1988/89.
It was beautiful.
It was also horrific to my Wife, who can't believe I have *that* kind of stuff taking up valuable brain space.

There's multiple instances on forums like this one where friends and family that aren't into DVD/Bluray like we are, ask us questions like "how do they make old movies (as in pre-2000's) into high definition?"
You have to remember, we're the minority that understands such things, and anime fans are a minority of that minority.
The truth is, most customers will want only new movies.

Here are shots from one of the stores (14th Street, I think) on Sept. 24 of this year:
As you can see, it's not even all anime.

Yeah, the anime at the BB's near me aren't what they used to be either, but they're at least 3x more than in those pics. And Fry's has around 4x more than that, but still no Akira, arguably one of the greatest animes of all time.

Emerald City Comicon Announcement 1
Akira: The 35th Anniversary Box Set
In December 1982, the manga world changed forever. That was the month that Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira debuted in Kodansha’s Young Magazine. The two-year run that followed set the tone for manga and anime for years to come, and overseas became a generation’s touchstone for Japanese comics.
In 2017, to honor the 35th anniversary of the debut of this seminal piece of sequential art, Kodansha Comics will release Akira: The 35th Anniversary Box Set. It will feature Vol. 1-6, the complete series, in large format hardcovers, plus the Akira Club art book. For the first time ever in English, the series will be presented in the original right-to-left format, with unaltered original art and Japanese sound effects with endnote translations. Our goal is to produce the ultimate, definitive English edition, presenting Otomo’s art in the most authentic and collectible way possible.
Additional extras to be announced. Suggested retail $199.99.
