Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010
updated 12:49 p.m. PT, Wed., Feb. 3, 2010
NEW YORK - Movie Gallery Inc., owner of the Hollywood Video movie rental chain, has filed for Chapter 11 protection and plans to close 805 stores — about a third of its total.
Its the second trip through bankruptcy court in just three years for Movie Gallery. The company is struggling with competition as more people choose to stream videos online from Netflix Inc. and other services or pick up $1-per-night rentals at Redbox kiosks.
The company, which is based in Wilsonville, Ore., first landed in bankruptcy court in October 2007, unable to sustain the debt it took on in its $850 million acquisition of rival Hollywood Entertainment Corp. in 2005. Movie Gallery agreed to assume about $350 million of Hollywood Entertainment's borrowings as a part of the deal.
Closing Sales are already on in select stores.

Looks like a quick search on the Hollywood Video site showed these stores are closing in Middle Tennessee area. This is just within a 30 mile search of me.

If you go to:
http://www.hollywoodvideo.com/storelocator.aspx
You can search for stores closing in your area, it will say "Closing Sale - Savings Storewide" if there are any closing.

The Hollywood Video where I work is closing and hopefully in a couple of weeks the sale prices will be better. They want $9.98 for all of our old rentals. The new releases aren't for sale yet. Hopefully they will come down especially on the older releases that have been rented tons of times.

There are a few in the surrounding area but nothing close. I would wait to hear of some great sales before I ventured out there.

I've never had a store close like this near me before, so I'm also wondering how long the store can be expected to stay open. I'd like to wait to get better sales if I can.
Edit: It's a 20 minute drive (each way), essentially, so I don't know if I should go yet. At the same time, I don't want the store to close before I even get to see what's available.

Go to the Movie Gallery website, search by zip code and their list of locations will tell you which stores are closing. Just look for the text in red.

A number of stores have been selling off their non-New release rental titles for months now. Last year they adopted a new policy where you could rent any non-New Release title for $1 or buy it for $3.99 (in a few stores it was $9.98). I managed to pick up a few used Criterions for $3.99 apiece.

I went today to the Hollywood Video nearby and got to pick a lot of OOP DVDs for $3.99 each. I'm waiting for the games and BDs to go one sale now.

My local stores aren't that great yet. $10 for all DVDs, Blus not for sale, and New Releases not for sale. I'll have to keep an eye on it.

My local HWV is closing. Don't know how long they have been selling their dvds as they just put up the "Store Closing" banners yesterday, but quite a few movies/games were already gone.
They are asking $4 for dvds & 12.99 for blu-rays. They may have just started selling the blu's as all of their shelves were still quite full.
Also, this store did not have any of the recent releases from within the last month or so.

Went to one today that was closing... I purchased a few movies at $4 each. Nothing too spectacular. I found a few OOP ones I don't need and picked up to sell in order to offset some of the cost of the $4 ones. It makes it a decent deal I guess. I won't be going back again.

The ones locally are still $9.98. An employee said they'll start dropping each week. Lots of great films for that price, including Criterion The Blob, Criterion Red Beard, Criterion Throne Of Blood, etc. I picked up:
1. Bride of The Re-Animator (Pioneer - Uncut)
2. MSTK - The Beginning Of The End
3. Night of the Demons.
4. The Blob (Criterion)
Even at $10 each, those are pretty good prices.

Several stores in my area are closing. I'll have to check out the selection. I'm probably not smart enough to know what is out of print, but I'll still see if I can find any Criterions or other bargains...

Re: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Bankruptcy-Store Closing Thread-2010
I think one store might be around 8 or 9 and the other one was 10.98 a piece last time I checked. I'm not playing with these people though. I went through the Blockbuster store closing and did quite well and prefer the way they did the closings.
Here at the Movie Gallery they have about 500 movies along their wall for rent only. These are some of the titles I want. They did say that eventually they would sell those too.
They are doing different pricing all over the store. Right now it isn't even worth spending the gas to go look. I have my eye on it, but the stock is not anywhere near as good as Blockbuster's stock. The foreign section is awful. I saw Black Book and Timecrimes maybe as for things I want to buy.
Where do they find these people to buy used dvd's at 11 bucks though? There were seriously people in the store buying one or two for 11 dollars. Used dvds? That's nuts. Have these people never heard of the internet or amazon independent sellers? (They weren't buying criterions or oop's)
I won't shop at the Movie Gallery stores until the regular titles are 6 and I probably won't buy until they are 4 or 2. If they are never 4 or 2 then I won't buy anything. I have a used dvd exchange store here that will sell me lots of dvd titles for 4 and some of the more common ones for 2.
I doubt I'll find anything at these store closings. Also, the people are hateful. Did I mention that the pricing was annoying as far as these not being sold over here, but these being sold for this, and those junk dvd's being sold for that?

My local store was closing. All used (with the exception of newer titles) are all $10.00. Horrible price for used DVDs. Maybe its ok for some OOP titles but I wont be paying anymore than $5.00 per title. And even then I'll probably only pay $5.00 for newer release and wait to see if some of the older titles drop lower. I was pretty pissed when I paid $5.00 per title at Blockbuster only to have them drop to $3.00 the next day.

I went yesterday and was trying to figure out the pricing, and what was on sale vs. what wasn't. Very confusing the way things were marked. Picked up a couple of titles for $2.99, but the rest were marked $10.

Just about every remaining HWV around me in metro Detroit is going away and there weren't many left after the last round of closures. I stocked up at a couple with 10-for-$15 and 10-for-$25 sales at the end. Darn shame for them and their employees.

It is, but I'm near the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area and there were just too many for the area to really care for. I think in their heyday there were about seven in the area, four of which clumped together near the U of M campus. It's like the Starbucks of video rental.
