(DEAD) DeepDiscount 40% Off MSRP Sale 11/13/09-11/29/09

Just got an order from deepdiscount and this sale flyer was included.

I was excited until I noticed the fine print.

Looks like their regular sale's are over. Not much of a deal this way.

(flyer is actually bright orange my scanner is crap apparently)

For some reason, I was skeptical of the big sale happening this fall. Probably because the last one was a just a few months ago. Looks like there might be some nice small deals, but nothing earth-shaking. Glad I didn't have a big list built up in anticipation.

you're kidding!!!
well this will change my dvd buying habits immensely: (adding dvds i want to a list and waiting for the semi annual sales to buy them at deepdiscount and dvdplanet). 40% of MSRP?!?! in other words you can get better deals at borders.com. what is their usual markdown.. and does it make this like a 10% off sale or so? well, here's hoping for some more of those awesome amazon.com black friday deals, like last year!

WTF? MSRP is insane. It looks like the prices on a lot of things will go up instead of down.

Agreed....other than some older catalog stuff that doesn't ever go on sale, I don't see how 40% off of MSRP would be very exciting to hardly anyone....it wouldn't even touch most release week pricing nowadays....

Although the flyer says differently, I am looking at a lot of cds that DO NOT have the 30% already taken off and reflected in the price.

I don't see how DeepDiscount hopes to compete if they keep up these lackluster sales. Their big selling point, "free shipping" isn't even a big plus as other competitors like Amazon offer the same thing.

Re: DeepDiscount 40% Off MSRP Sale 11/13/09-11/29/09

You know....this hurts.

I've been on a DVD kick for the last few weeks and thanks to Borders 40% off I broke down and bought a few sets I had on my DeepDiscount list for a while. I was going to buy the Zorro TV series from DeepDiscount until I realized the chances of it going OOP were too great to chance. Due to an accident, my order for my Doctor Who DVDs went through and I felt bad that I wasn't going to get a good deal or miss out on something. I'm still waiting for a few things through DeepDiscount (including one thing that has shipped and STILL hasn't arrived yet), and....well, things change in a bad economy, but I can get better deals at fucking Walmart. WALMART!!

This just hurts. I don't know if I'll bother. I feel bad for DDD because they had to close one of their stores, but 40% off MSRP is Borders-styled nonsense. I'm afraid I may bow out for this year and just find deals elsewhere. I hope this is a one-time thing because DDD does rock on many levels, but so far this just sucks on ice.

Imagine if it was 40% off on everyday prices! But alas, no.

Re: DeepDiscount 40% Off MSRP Sale 11/13/09-11/29/09

Referencing a discount off list price was probably a smart idea since Border and B&N do it this way. In the past the less knowledgeable might have thought a Borders sale of 40% was better then a DD sale of 25% off, which it wasn't since Borders was off list and DD was off their sale price.

However, choosing 40% this time around was not a good idea. Typically, in the past most items I got during theirs sales came to around 50% off. I looked at a few on my wish list and two sets priced at $94currently will only end up $90 during the sale. Another TV season going for $49 will now end up $48. While still slightly cheaper, nothing to get exceited about.

If they were going to pull back a bit, I don't think they should have been so drastic. They should have at least gone 45%.

Re: DeepDiscount 40% Off MSRP Sale 11/13/09-11/29/09

Boo, this is most unfortunate.

I thought I'd look at the numbers:

I did a quick search on one of the pricing databases and here's the results:

(Note: interesting that the flyer indicates 70,000+ titles, but the pricing database can only identify about 35,000 titles)

35% (about 12000) titles are currently >= 40% off MSRP and therefore UNAFFECTED by this sale.

40% (about 14000) titles are 29%-40% off MSRP. These titles will have WORSE discounts than the usual sale, but will still be reduced.

25% of titles which will see BETTER or equal discounts than the normal sale.

I'm not liking my odds here.

[Addendum]
On a personal note, I have now reviewed my "short list" from my Wish List on DD's site. Whereas I thought I was going to be purchasing about 6 titles this year, this has now been trimmed down to 2 titles. One title got upgraded due to the change in sale and the other is being purchased in spite of the "increase."

It is also kind of interesting that the flyer came out early. It seems like we usually don't find out until the day of the sale when there is a mad rush. I wonder if by releasing it early as a flyer they wanted to test the waters and see the reaction.

This is...disappointing to say the least. Pretty much the only time I buy DVDs these days is during the DD sale, but I think I'll finally be sitting on the sidelines for this one.

Well, I've already been blowing a lot of my Black Friday budget on the deals at Amazon, so I won't be all that sorry to skip over DD this year.

Explain to me the logic of NOT having decent sales. It seems in this economy there seems to be less and less good sales. I don't think it forces people to pay more for an object, rather it has the effect of keeping money in their pocket. Maybe there's some economics I don't understand, but this seems straight forward.

Re: DeepDiscount 40% Off MSRP Sale 11/13/09-11/29/09

I've noticed at times DD's retail price being higher then others. Based on their previous practice at discounts it never really made a difference in anything. However, if they are going to have sales that are a percentage off retail then they better have the correct retail price.

One item in particular that I've been waiting for the right deal on retails for $70 at Amazon with a discounted price to $49. DD currently has it listed at a retail price of $80. At 40% off it isn't any different then current Amazon price.

I wonder how DD will deal with people questioning some of their listed retail prices during this sale?

Well it does bring a few things down for instance the new Sony Film Noir box would be $36.15 which is $9 cheaper than amazon.

Re: DeepDiscount 40% Off MSRP Sale 11/13/09-11/29/09

Ever since the 25% off sale in the Summer was pushed back a month or so I've suspected that one of two things would happen - either they were only going to start offering the sale once a year, right in the middle, or they were going to totally do away with the event all together.

I'm especially ticked off since this likely means that DVDPlanet wont do the sale anymore either...and I have almost $450 in credit waiting to be spent.

I doubt this would be the end of DD. While they won't stand out as much as in the past. Amazon and Walmart are the only one's really competing with them. As along as Borders, BB, and B&N can still sell disks at their standard prices DD will have business. Without the sale they still have plenty of items for less then Amazon, we have just come to expect much more from them regarding these sales.
