Re: Favorite Movie of the 90's: Round of 64/Group #2
Matchup #1
Heat vs The Fugitive- Haven't seen either of these in over 10 years and maybe I was too young to appreciate Heat, but I found it unbearably boring, while The Fugitive totally engaged me. I also saw Heat in shitty conditions (video projection in a college lecture hall, pan and scan)... so, if I were to watch both again now, my vote could change.
Matchup #2
Titanic vs Miller's Crossing- Apologies on this one. I'm not actually sure if I've seen all of Miller's Crossing... I know I've seen parts of it. But I feel confident in my vote because I've rarely liked anything from the Coen Brothers (I did like Lebowski) and don't really understand all the hype around them. I give them credit for being unusual filmmakers but their movies just don't do it for me. Loved Titanic.
Matchup #3
Jurassic Park vs The Truman Show- Alright, I love Jurassic Park, and the spectacle is second to none... but Truman Show is a really beautifully made film. Peter Weir makes a science out of narrative elegance and pretty much everything he does is really good. Not to mention all the insane continuity and logistics errors in Jurassic Park (the amazing disappearing T-Rex habitat which turns into a cliff).
Matchup #4
Forrest Gump vs Total Recall- I love bashing Forrest Gump like anyone else, especially in comparison with Pulp Fiction, which should have won the Oscar... but Total Recall is schlocky crap. Really. I liked it when I was a little kid, but even then I could see the crapola filmmaking when the bit player (I don't remember if he was a taxi driver or something) recited the commercial jingle as "REcall, REcall, REcall". When the commercial is actually heard in the movie it's "For the memory of a lifetime, reCALL, reCALL, reCALL." Totally different tune to what the actor sang... showing that when they shot they hadn't made that commercial or written that song and the director just told the actor to wing it without hearing the actual song. Even as a little kid, that discrepancy broke the illusion of the film.
Matchup #5
The Matrix vs Clerks- There was a time when I loved The Matrix... then parts 2 and 3 came out and the emperor was revealed to have no clothes. I haven't seen a Wachowski movie since and my memory of the first one is tarnished to flukedom.
Clerks on the other hand, I like now even more than I did when it was new. Funny, dirty, and inspiring. I think Kevin Smith is usually a pretty crappy director, but Clerks is a charming motherfucker of a movie.
Matchup #6
#28 Casino vs Schindler's List- Really wanted to vote on this, but I haven't seen Casino.
Matchup #7
The Big Lebowski vs A Simple Plan- Never seen A Simple Plan.
Matchup #8
True Romance vs Austin Powers- Well, I kinda like the first Austin Powers, LOVED the second one... but True Romance is so cool.
