So, that'll put GI Joe at about a 60 million dollar opening, right? Not bad for this late in the summer.

Re: Box Office 8/7-8/9: G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra $lithers to the Top

Yeah, the estimates are around $55-$60 mil. With all the early buzz not being too good, this one had a chance of doing very poorly with its opening. I read that the production budget is about $175 million, so they needed this kind of number. Who knows how much it'll drop next weekend, but this certainly has a chance at $150 million when it's finished.

Pretty good numbers for Joe. I'm down for a sequel as long as it's got more Snake Eyes vs. Storm Shadow.

Looks like Funny People is imploding. I better go see it before it disappears.

Glad to hear Joe did well. Hope it holds up, audiences seem to like it. Can't wait to see it later this weekend.

Considering all the horrible buzz the movie had to endure, a 55-60 million opening weekend is really really good in my opinion

With the circumstances around the movies release, im sure expectations at Paramount are in check, and hopefully they realize a 2nd movie is definitely viable and learn from their mistakes.

Haha. The ups and downs of that really long 'GI Joe Non-Reviews' thread is pretty funny.

This is the movie Transformers 2 wanted to be...just dumb goofy fun with wall-to-wall action. Instead TF2 was mostly loud, and I walked out with a mild headache...no such pain when I walked out of G.I. Joe. Surprised I enjoyed the film as much as I did.

You mean TF2...T2 and the T2 moniker ONLY belong to one film that film is Terminator 2.

Why would they need to spell it out for you? He got stabbed in the chest, electrocuted and fell a very long way down. Unless he is superhuman in some way, I think he's a goner.

Poor poor Universal. They've catered to adult audiences these past few months and what has it got them. Nothing at all. Looks like we will be seeing more children's material and less adult material from yet another studio. Oh well maybe they kinda deserve it after the things they pulled with The Boat that Rocked.

In a film THAT out there, you don't think there's some way they'd bring him back? KillerCannibal saw the film too so his request was legitimate. There was already discussion in one of the GI Joe threads on how he'll probably be back. Granted there's a lot of other characters they can use, but c'mon. In a GI Joe movie, like this, anything is possible.

Storm Shadow died at LEAST twice in the comics and came back. There's a reason that he fell into the water (no body, no evidence). I have no doubt he'll be back

Plus, let's not forget that he fell into freezing water. Something tells me that the sub-zero temps will somehow "preserve" his body, or something like that, long enough for someone in a recon sub to pick him up and thaw his ass out. The makers know fans want more SE vs. SS, so I'm sure they'll make it happen.

So $100 million worldwide in its first weekend is certainly respectible.

Actually, overseas numbers are higher than I would have expected.

I just don't see G.I. Joe getting the word of mouth to sustain. Transformers 2 was a lesser film, but it opened so huge it didn't have to worry about word of mouth. While Joe had its problems, I would like to see a sequel.

Really? It doesn't feel like there's much buzz around that movie at all to me. Joe will probably fall to ~25 mil, and my very uneducated off the cuff guess would only throw out ~10-15 for District 9. Of course, I don't have any interest in it so it's probably my own bias.

Outside of internet forums, District 9 has VERY little buzz. No one I know even knew it existed until I talked about it. Little to no marketing for this one.

I would be surprised to see it oust Joe from #1 next weekend.

Depends what you mean by sustain. All movies drop in their second weekend, and most of the action type blockbusters drop fairly heavily. It's obviously not going to do Transformers 2 kinda of money, but a strong opening weekend should be enough to green light a sequel. But it's obviously not going to do $30-40 million next weekend either.
