TV Size Question (CRT vs LCD)
I currently have a 27" CRT TV and was considering upgrading to an LCD TV.
The LCD's have a different aspect ratio. What size LCD would I need to have the same height as my 27" CRT? I know it'll be wider. What I'll be doing is using that as a base and getting a few inches bigger.
Also, at what point does 720p vs. 1080p make a difference? I don't really see myself paying for high def tv or high def DVDs, at least not in the near future.

Is this what you mean by "the difference"
And for the same (screen) height, it looks like you want around a 34" LCD

Re: TV Size Question (CRT vs LCD)
If you are use to viewing a 27 inch tube TV with 4:3 aspect then you are going to want to get a 37 inch flat screen. The 32 inch isn't going to have the height that the 27 inch did but you'll appreciate the extra real estate with a 37 inch. Google TV calculator. Compare the different screen sizes and aspect ratios until you decide what's best for you. I am also looking to upgrade a 27 inch CRT and nothing less than a 37 inch LCD will suffice.

Re: TV Size Question (CRT vs LCD)
32 should be just about right on. Most CRTs are not actually as large as rated, LCDs are generally exact. So if your 27" is really 26.5", 32 is actually closer. Anyway, in the low 30s. I don't know what Google uses for a calculator, but Excel works for me. And Pythagoras.
Although personally I recommend a projector with a nice 100" screen. But whatever.

Re: TV Size Question (CRT vs LCD)
Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for, and thanks Grasshopper and Spiky.
Looks like ideally I would get a 37"* 780p - the viewing distance is between 10 and 15 feet in my house. I'm not in a big house.
Maybe 1080p if the price is right.
Thanks again!
* I see that the 32" would be equivelant in height to what I have now, but it wouldn't hurt to get a new TV that is a little bigger.

Re: TV Size Question (CRT vs LCD)
Thanks for those links. I have been looking to upgrade from my 32" and 36" CRT and wanted to keep the height at least the same. It also gives me an idea what I might be able to fit in my one entertainment center that I would rather not get rid of just yet.

I like this calculator for comparing TV dimensions (it works for both 4:3 and 16:9 sets):

Boy you're gonna make a ton of friends around here with that attitude. And why dredge up a two year old thread to insult somebody?
