Why is the SPIDER-MAN 2 trailer in 1:85:1 aspect ratio?
Can somebody tell me why on the Hellboy bonus dvd, the preview for spiderman 2 is in 1:85:1 aspect ration and in HD? Why isn't in the same format on the spider-man 2 dvd? Even the blue ray is in 2:40.

I think the obvious answer is that footage was cropped for the trailer. The movie was filmed with a wider aspect ratio, clearly, and was intended as such from the filmmakers.
The first Spider-Man was 1:85:1 though so are you sure it wasn't a trailer for the first one?

Positive. I put the hellboy bonus dvd into my Xbox hd player. The spider-man 2 trailer was in full wide screen. Then i put in my spider-man 2 dvd, which is in enhanced wide screen, it was in 2:40 aspect ratio and the quality didn't look as good as the trailer. I wish the entire movie looked like that trailer.
My setup: Optoma HD70 720p/1080i. Onkyo 7.1 packaged surround sound.

Wait. You said the trailer was on the Hellboy bonus DVD? Unless it was a file that was accessible only via computer (like a WMV file), how in the heck could the trailer for Spider-Man 2 been in HD to begin with?
On a slightly different note, if I recall correctly, the trailer for Spider-Man 2 was usually presented open matte since the film was shot in Super35 rather than Anamorphic.

The first time I ever noticed a films Aspect Ratio altered for the trailer was the 2nd trailer for Batman and Robin. A film that was 1.85:1 was altered to 2.35:1. The reason? Evidently it was attached to a WB film when first released and that film was was 2.35:1. So the altered the ratio so they could be attached. At least that is what the projectionist told me.

Why wasn't the whole movie that way? Why just crop up the trailer? It must be a marketing ploy, cuz the trailer had better picture quality then the actual movie on dvd. you should check it out yourselves.
