UA's 90 Years, 90 Films DVD Set ----> 12/11/07

DVD Extra: UA's 90 Years, 90 Films
The Criterion Collection got a lot of ink last year when it issued a 40-title box of arthouse classics to mark the 40th anniversary of its sister company, Janus Films. Now MGM will mark the 90th anniversary of its United Artists label -- two years early -- by issuing a 90-title "United Artists Super Deluxe Set'' on Dec. 11. MGM, which has been casually slapping its Leo the Lion logo on UA flicks for years (as well as the Samuel Goldwyn, Orion and American-International titles its also owns) now wants to throw a premature celebration to draw attention to United Artists, which is being re-launched as MGM's specialty film division under Tom Cruise and his producing partner Paula Wagner, beginning with next month's "Lions for Lambs.''
MGM bought the faltering UA in 1980 from Transamerica Corporation and continued to release titles under the label until a couple of years ago, when it shipped "Capote'' over to a grateful Sony Pictures Classics during the period MGM temporarily exited the distribution business. UA was founded in 1919 by Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith, but it now owns none of their films except possibly Pickford's "Coquette,'' which is not in the set. The oldest title, "The Woman in the Window'' (1944), is actually a ringer; it was originally released by RKO and later acquired by UA along with the rest of the International Pictures catalogue as part of a TV deal. The other blatant anamoly is the John Huston version of "Moby Dick'' with Gregory Peck, which was originally released by Warner Bros. and somehow ended up in the UA vaults. The studio's glory years under Arthur Krim and Robert Benjamin, who bought out Pickford and Chaplin's faltering stewardship in 1954, are particularly well represented, including their fruitful sponsorship of filmmakers like Billy Wilder, Woody Allen, John Frankenheimer, Blake Edwards, Burt Lancaster and the James Bond team. More questionable is the presence of "Dance With Me Henry, "A Hole in the Head,'' "Pocket Full of Miracles'' and "Road House,'' as well as the absence of such UA landmarks as "Stagecoach,'' "High Noon,'' "The African Queen'' and "One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest,'' all of which unfortunately passed out of the studio's control long ago.
There are even a smattering foreign titles like "Fellini's Satyricon,'' Ingmar Bergman's "Persona'' and "La Cage Aux Folles,'' as well as the way-over-budget western epic that spelled the end of UA as a standalone studio, "Heaven's Gate.'' (And, of course, "Rain Man'' with Mr. Cruise, arguably the last big-budget flick released under the UA label). The massive 110-disc set lists for $860.98 but Amazon is taking pre-orders for a discounted $608.99. Smaller mini-sets touting the UA label begin rolling out next month. MGM distributes its DVDs through Fox Home Entertainment, which will be offering its own digital doorstop for Christmas, the 25-title "Ford at Fox'' box focusing on director John Ford.

Hey everybody order this at barnes and noble so we can get them to increase the discount to 30 percent off. Then reorder with the bn 50 percent coupon. Thats what they did with the ford at fox set. They increased the discount as people ordered.

OK, who is the nutjob that that came up with this insanity? Seems a well thought out, themed collection. NO Chaplin, NO Pickford and NO D.W. Griffith. They only STARTED the company after all.

There's also a 30 disc deluxe gift set is also available for pre-order at amazon for 200 bucks. This can be an alternative for those who can't shell out 600-700 bucks.

Eh, too late in my case. This screams as desperation since most of these are P&S and Child's Play is coming out in Widescreen (as a SE) in 2008. I'll pass and pick up the ones I need during DeepDiscount's 20% sale.
