Weeds - He Taught Me How To Drive By (09/24/07)

Surprised to see no thread on this one yet...

Pretty good episode, but this show is majorly losing it's focus. It seems like the writers don't know how to wrap up a story, or keep it going, so they just abandon it with a convenient plot device and move on.

Nancy looked f'in SMOKING at the end. What I would have paid to be Modine right at that moment.

Someone needs to stop writing Shane's lines. He sounds like a disillusioned 35 year old, not a middle school student. I don't know of a single kid his age who talks, thinks or acts like that.

Overall it was good for some funny lines and eye candy, but this season isn't nearly as gripping as the previous two. I miss U-Turn.

Agreed about Shane; the political/religious lines he spouts have always been incredibly unnatural and a weak link for the show for its entire run. The fact that they're devoting more time to that this season kinda sucks. The only time I've liked Shane's character is when he did stuff that actually seemed real for his age (like getting a hopeless crush on Zooey Deschanel's character).

I'm also not liking Andy having a plotline that's completely independent from the main story. His character works best bouncing off of Nancy, Kevin Nealon, etc. and being actively involved in Nancy's business; having him off on his own "adventures" just seems like b-story filler.

I'm not giving up on it; there's still a lot of bits I really like, and a show losing its focus some time around its 3rd season (and getting it back later) is actually a fairly common occurrence, so I'm not concerned that it's irredeemably lost it yet.

And, yes, Mary Louise Parker at the end was

Marvin was painful to watch all episode. What a terrible actor/character.

Shane's storyline is the single stupidest thing I've seen on TV since I've been watching.

While Shane's dialog is totally un-realistic for a boy his age, I still think children his age could have opinions just as profound as his, but no way could a child articulate himself so well... I still can't articulate as well as he can.

Yeah the show has lost a little direction, but man is it as entertaining as ever!

Can we get some screen shots of Mary Louise Parker at the end... Smokin!

I enjoyed the episode. Thought it was pretty funny.

Had to laugh when the porn chick got offended when someone was staring at her tits.

Shane's dialogue is a little unbelievable.

Thank you Sauce for the screen caps.

I am a straight woman and I thought Mary Louise Parker was smoking at the end.

I'll have to remember that underwear trick.

Man, why couldn't that camera have dollied left at the end...

As for Shane, I love his plot line. While I didn't get political until college, there's video footage of me in 4th grade going toe-to-toe (oddly eloquently so) with my uncle on the topic of racial injustice, so it's not at all hard for me to believe that a kid can be wise and read beyond his years. (Then of course highschool hit, I was introduced to herb and my intelligance went right back to nornal levels, if not somewhat remedial).

I think the Shane stuff is pretty funny, but this episode really made me feel that this season isn't anywhere near as good as the show used to be in the first 2 seasons. It just seems aimless, random and the humour isn't as sharp. U-turn in a hot tub was funny, but most of the time I felt like the writers intended stuff to be way funnier than it played... this show needs to get back on track asap!

I was out sick Monday (and the following two days, ugh) and I don't really get on the internet at home, that's why there wasn't a thread Monday morning. Anyway, I already miss the U-Turn, but the version of Little Boxes this week was awesome, probably the only version other than the orchestral rendition last year that stands out as unique compared to the rest (okay, maybe the French and Spanish versions too..). It does seem like what should be major problems this season are being tackled in an almost episodic format. Oh look, Nancy's a white slave that owes over $100,000, oh never mind, U-Turn dies. Oh look, Nancy has a trunk of heroin in her house, we'll use that to clear up more loose ends that started in the same episode! The political sewage continues to flow as well, which I wouldn't mind so much if it didn't seem so forced and outside the show. And the porn scene? I mean, there's been nudity in the show before but this just felt like Showtime saying, "Hey, this show is on cable, we need tits to justify this!" ala Penn & Teller's show. And a fart joke to go with it.. wow.

Anyway, so I guess Groff is supposed to be the subtle, long standing antagonist this season? Unless he dies next week..

Whose dead body was that at the end? Peter was not wearing his DEA jacket and badge when he was supposedly killed. Was it just some other random agent to show the violence escalating?

Not sure if this needs to be spoiler tagged, since it was in next week's preview, but I'll be safe:

Spoiler:
It was supposed to be Peter, based on next week's preview. I'm assuming they put his DEA jacket on because it was the only way the convey that the decomposing corpse was him, despite the inconsistency. Didn't really stand out to me as a problem, since I didn't remember what Peter was wearing when he was killed anyway.

I find it funny that the people who are accusing the show of becoming aimless and losing its way are the same people who say they miss U-Turn. To me, U-Turn is the reason the show became aimless and lost focus, and it was at the end of season two that they started the trend of killing off villains they didn't like anymore, only to replace them with even worse ones. U-Turn had a few funny moments, but overall I thought his storyline with Nancy just dragged and dragged. I think the show would have had a much stronger season without him.

I totally agree. The U-Turn derailed it for me and I was so glad that Nancy was able to get out from under the debt from the fat dude that took over for U-Turn. To go on with that would have weighed the show down even more.
The show has not been very funny this year.

Agreed. U-Turn made things too serious on this "comedy". Let's get back to the funny!

Comedy such as? All he did is swear and order Nancy around every episode.
Not funny.

His comedy was more paradoxical rather than simple pratfalls and punch lines.

But hey, comedy is suggestive. Some people find a guy farting funny.

U-Turn had a few funny moments, but not nearly enough to justify his presence. He was not a good idea from the start, and maybe now the show can worry about actually being good again.

Finally watched this episode last night. I'm glad U-Turn is gone. He was ok in small doses in Season 2(I loved that moment when he casually threw a knife into that dude's leg), but making him a constant presence around Nancy was killing the show.

And the side stories with Andy and Shane have been annoying as well, probably because I don't enjoy having the writers' politics shoved in my face on a weekly basis.

There's still time to salvage this season. But even if the year ends with a strong finish, it's nowhere close to the level of the first 2 seasons.

Oh, and I miss Zooey's character.
