Shazam! (2019, D: David F. Sandberg) S: Zachary Levi

Team Captain: August writing NL's 'Shazam!'
By Borys Kit

March 9, 2007

John August has been hired to pen "Shazam!" New Line Cinema's adaptation of a DC Comics series featuring Captain Marvel. Peter Segal is attached to direct and also is producing with Michael Ewing.

The comic book series focuses on Billy Batson, a teenager who becomes the superhero known as Captain Marvel when he utters the magic word "Shazam!" The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Aries, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.

Writers on the long-gestating project include William Goldman and Bryan Goluboff.

Segal approached August because of the scribe's track record of combining big spectacle with characterization in such movies as "Tim Burton's Corpse Bride," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Big Fish." August, who recently started reading the trade paperbacks that compiled the "Shazam!" series, was intrigued.

"It's a unique opportunity to do a comic book movie where the character in it actually read comic books," said August, who has started writing the script. "What's terrific about the character is that he looks like this superstudly superhero but is really a 13-year-old boy. And to approach everything that is great about a superhero movie from a 13-year-old boy's perspective was a unique way in."

August sat down with noted DC Comics writer Geoff Johns for "idiot checking," making sure the filmmakers' approach to the character was consistent with what fans love about him. "I think we're going to be able to be really faithful to the mythology and yet make it completely transparent for people who have no idea who the character is," August said.

Chris Godsick and Michael Uslan ("Constantine") are executive producing.

Gregory Noveck is overseeing for DC Comics. Mark Kaufman and Daryl Freimark are overseeing for New Line.

August, who wrote and directed the Sundance Film Festival favorite "The Nines," is repped by UTA and attorney Ken Richman.

But no Justice League movie for you... eventhough Time Warner owns New Line, I don't ever recall their films crossing over and NL is treated as a seperate entity.

I think NL will be the only studio to have done a Marvel and DC movie.

Jake Gyllenhall???

The role screams Patrick Warburton. Alex Ross even modeled his Captain Marvel on him and he's been pretty good at casting. (He cast Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Timothy Dalton as Tony Stark. All in the comics of course.)

However, Jake could be Billy Batson. Warburton doesn quite look like a teenager.

Inevitable uncomfortable sexual innuendo between Captain Marvel and as-yet unnamed lead actress, played for laughs? Check.

Captain Marvel was one of my favorites as a child. I'd love to see a faithful adaptation of the old comic books. The serial of this back in the old days wasn't too good.

My favorite was Captain Marvel Jr. who was a teanager on crutches when he wasn't being a super-hero. He was different in that he wore a blue outfit and didn't say "Shazam" to transform but the name of his hero, Captain Marvel.

Ah, those were the days!

And Hoppy, the Marvel Bunny!!

Patrick Warburton would be perfect for Capt Marvel. Age wouldn't be a problem, a different, younger actor should be playing Billy Batson no matter who is cast as the big red cheese.

I don't know if you're joking but that costume is one of the better costumes in comics. That Alex Ross painting is also one of the best representations of said costume.

Yeah, but he couldn't say his own name. That's tough.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Captain Marvel HUGE FLASH OF LIGHTNING... Jr. Uh, I mean Freddie."

Re: Shazam! No, not Shaq's Kazaam sequel..

Bill Birch to write 'Shazam!' reboot
Peter Segal to direct comic adaptation
By DAVE MCNARY

Warner Bros. has tapped scribe Bill Birch to reboot "Shazam!," the DC Comics' adaptation of the Captain Marvel story that's being developed as a potential franchise.
"Get Smart" director Peter Segal remains onboard to direct; he'll also produce with his Callahan Filmworks partner Michael Ewing. Geoff Johns will co-write and consult on the project.

Segal and Ewing began working on the film three years ago at New Line before it moved over to Warners. Pic centers on teenaged Billy Batson, who transforms into the superhero when he says the word "Shazam!" The studio is now looking to go back to the original DC Comics source material for inspiration.

Previous drafts have been penned by John August, William Goldman, Bryan Goluboff and the team of Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow.

Birch is currently writing "One Finger Salute" for Warner Bros. with Andrew Lazar producing and Segal attached to direct.

He's repped by ICM and Anonymous Content.

Reboot? Studios seem too eager to throw that term around. Especially when there's nothing to reboot yet.

Kudos stingermck

Not sure if a new thread should be started or just change the title of this one... Something like:

Shazam (201?) (D: ?, S: The Rock)
