Toshiba A1/XA1/D1 startup/load times...what are yours?
I don't have a stopwatch to get an exact time on my XA1 but it seems like its about 1:30 before I can start a movie(when the disc is already in the player) and a bit longer iff not. I have seen a few people over at AVS stating startup/load times of under 20sec. for each. I was wondering if anyone has/would time theirs and report what their times are and when the player was made? someone suggested a newer firmware may be on these but those with faster times haven't reported back yet. could it be possible Toshiba ran out of a few items internally and were forced to "upgrade" to something different which caused the speedups? I'm really curious about this now.

I stop watched my XA-1.
I get the following:
cold start to getting an image = 80 seconds,

my player boots fairly fast..about 17 secs to load screen and then about 10 secs to play movie...
but it boots even faster if I turn it on with the movie already inside..about 25 or less secs..
sucks for those who takes 40+ secs to boot...

About 40 seconds for it to boot up and another 20 for the disc in the player to come up.

Mine is probably about the same as Adam Tyners. I'd be inclined to believe that anyone who claims that theirs is booted up in under 20 secs is either lying through their teeth or lying out their ass.

A watched pot never boils, as my grandmother is fond of saying. The more you obsess over how long it takes the boot up, the longer it seems. Do what I do; turn on the HD-DVD player first before the rest of your equipment. By the time everything else is ready and you're seated, the movie will be ready.
It's the HDCP verification and "handshake" that causes such a long startup delay, and unfortunately HDCP isn't going away.

I never said it bothered me for the startup/load times. I have actually posted before that its not a big deal for me. I just turn it on and go grab a drink from the fridge or whatever, come back and I'm ready to go. I just saw a few posters claiming those times and it raised my curiousity.

The thing that really bothers me the most is that you have to wait for it to completly boot up in order to remove a disc that you may have left inside. Hopefully a firmware update will allow the player to eject a disc while booting.

The load times don't bother me. I mean, we're only talking a minute or 2 before everything is ready. And there's 24 hours in a day, so no rush.
Just keep telling yourself this is a 1st generation model. I think it's unfair to compare this 1st generation model to today's newest dvd players as far as loading, etc. goes. It'd be much better to compare them to the 1st gen. dvd players. Plus, the HD has some checking to do before it decides it's ready to play.

Since most DVDs have so many FBI warnings and such that aren't fast-forwardable, when I get ready to watch a movie, I usually insert the DVD, turn on everything else, watch regular TV for a few minutes, then switch over to DVD input to watch my movie. That's how much I hate unskippable warnings and ads. I wouldn't notice an extra 40 seconds delay at all.
