Well, I bit on the first release, but it's been on heavy rotation as there are some self-proclaimed Western lovers in my house....However, since it's a fave, I'll have to buy this again. Nice cover art indeed

hmm, at least they're porting over the extras from the original se. I think I'll wait to see if the additions are worth the double-dip. Sweet cover though, thanks for the info!

Wow. That is lovely. But I'll wait for some reviews since I already have the previous release.

I have the original release also and really enjoyed that edition. This does sound very nice though.

But I think I will wait for some reviews first aslo.

My favorite western...Excellent cover art...Definate improvement over the original release.

I actually like the original release's cover better, and it comes with a documentary on the making of the movie. Seeing as how the original is also anamorphic I can't see double dipping on this one - even though I love the movie!

Rather than putting this one out I wish that Sony/MGM would have set a R1 release date for the SE's of A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, and A Fistful of Dynamite. Or they could have released those AND this one on the same day.

I never bought the 1st release, so I'll probably get this. Are there new featurettes on this release? The original Special Edition was a 1-disc release and this is a 2-disc set, so I guess the new material is enough to push the features onto a 2nd disc.

The upcoming release has a Guns for Hire making of documentary too, unless the original release has a different making of...

I actually prefer the first cover. I don't see what's so special about the new one.

Easily one of the best Westerns ever made, so yes, it's double-dipping time.

I just watched the original movie today and it was great. I don't think i'll be double dipping on this, unless there's something outstanding on the new release, but i'm quite happy with the original. for now anyway.

DVD Savant's review is stating the transfer is new. I'm surprised this isn't touted on the packaging. I have the 2001 SE version which I have not watched yet, so I'm hesitant to pick this up. I'm not big into specla features, so mostly the decision will be based if the transfer is really improved enough to warrant a re-purchase at twice the cost of what I paid for the SE.

Damn, was just at Wal-Mart and saw the film, but didn't check the price. If it had been $10 I would have picked it up. May have to go back and check. I already have the first release, but may get the new one for that price.

I could care less about the cover art...but I do like a nice looking spine...and I prefer the new one.

It also has a second commentery from film historian, Sir Christopher Frayling and a few new featurettes. Enough for me to snag it since it's a personal fave. I'll be checking on the transfer when I give it a viddey in the morning.

Or maybe I just bought it because I'm still a nasty little dvd whore.

I trust Savant:

MGM's DVD of The Magnificent Seven is a serious improvement on the 2001 version. A new transfer has found more color and detail, and much better encoding renders a far cleaner image. The enhanced picture has clearly gone through several digital polishings because almost all the dirt and image damage has disappeared. To Savant's eye it looks as if the original's dirty optical title sequence has cleaned up by using still frames of the various title cards - the live-action behind the last few title cards now pops into motion much more noticeably. A side-by-side comparison of the two transfers shows the newer to be far more pleasing.
What more do ya'll need?

DVDBeaver now has a comparison, but I can't see enough of an improvement to warrant an upgrade. Also the Collector's Edition is slightly cropped horizontically.

The new Magnificent Seven DVD is worth the upgrade for Christopher Frayling's commentary alone. It also ports over all of the features from the previous disc and adds new ones, which is the right kind of double-dipping. It's easily worth a rebuy in my book.
