100 Movies. 31 Days. It's "The October [Horror] Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

The goal is simple: 100 *Horror films throughout the month of October. Just list them after you watch them and be sure to number them. Obviously the person who watches the most movies for the month of October wins the challenge.

The prize: Everyone's respect.

This will also serve as the "What Are You Watching This Week" thread for the entire month of October. So if you already post there...that's an incentive to "accept the challenge".

*Personally, I'll be watching strictly horror and horror-related films and encourage everyone else to do the same...because that's the entire point of the challenge. However, if you're not a horror fanatic, feel free to post your non-horror films here as well. But, they will NOT count towards your final tally.

And regarding questions such as:

Like any goal, you may or may not reach it...but you won't know unless you try. Give it a shot even if you feel you don't have any chance whatsoever.

Tips:

Drinks lots of coffee
If you suffer from insomnia - use it to your advantage
If you work from home - ditto
Manage your time wisely
Bored? Watch a movie.

We've already got a few challengers:

Cameron - 105
mikewendt - 101
Giles - 102

Starts Saturday, October 1.

I have a few questions:

Does watching a film with commentary count? (I assume it does, but...)

Does watching a film with and without commentary count as two movies?

If so, are we limited to one commentary per film or can we go through multiple commentaries?

How about theatrical and extended/alternate versions?

If so, are they still separate if they're on the same disc with seamless branching?

I guess PAL folks have a slight advantage, as that 4% speedup can add up over 100 movies or so.

I won't get to anywhere near 100 films in October(or even if I spread it out a couple months in advance!).

But I will do my best to get at least some horror viewing done durring the month. Saturday starts off with a midnight showing of Cannibal Holocaust. While the end of the month brings me Saw 2. In the mean time,I'll try to watch a few horror dvds. Especially the ones I will be picking up durring the month(The Fly,High Tension, Land of the Dead).

My Watched List for October:

Saturday, October 1st

1. H. P. Lovecraft's Dream-Quest of Unknown Kaddath (Don't know if this really counts as Horror, but it's Lovecraft, so I'm couting it)

I actually pulled this off one year with having both SCREAM (Canada's Horror film network) and working in a video store. We, meaning my roomie and I, managed 103. We went through all the major franchises (Jason, Freddy and Myers), rented MANY duds and tripe and really had a fine time as the nights progressed to our final night of

Halloween
Rocky Horror (at midnight)

Since then it has been a tradition to watch both those films on Halloween and only watch Horror films in October.

Sadly, this year, that tradition will have to be placed on hold somewhat as I blaze through all my October orders, mainly the Hitchcock films. So, I doubt I'll get anywhere NEAR 100.

There is no way I will make 100 but I'll give it a shot anyhow. I have about 200 or 300 dvds I have not yet seen, which is pretty sad.

All movies have been viewed on dvd unless otherwise stated. First time viewings will be listed in spookey jackolantern orange

Yeah, I was about to say, does it only have to be horror movies on DVD? Because I get all of the movie networks and that can definetly help me out (Whether it's good horror flicks or bad ones) In fact, I'm about to watch Ju-On for the first time on 1 of the Showtime channels.

I don't see why not. As long as you actually watch the film all the way through. Just listening doesn't count.

Again, as long as you watch the film all the way through EACH time....sure.

No. You've gotta draw the line somewhere...just pick your favorite version and watch it.

Forget what I just said. How could I say no to someone watching something such as the different "Dawn of the Dead" versions or "Alien" Director's Cut?

It doesn't have to be limited strictly to DVDs. As long as they're played uncut and in their entirety it counts. I know I'll be watching some of the October horror lineup from Turner Classic Movies.

I am well-equipped for this challenge, since by current count, I own 419 horror DVD's (well that includes sci-fi, too - but close enough). But three movies a night? I was going to attempt 31 horror flicks in 31 days (one per) and thought that was going to be quite a challenge, time-wise.

Oh well, just for kicks I started early. First night: The Fall of the House of Usher - 1960 Roger Corman version, of course.

LIST OF MOVIES WATCHED
10/1 The Fall of the House of Usher
10/2 Stage Fright
10/3 Psycho 2
10/4 Zombie 5: Killing Birds
10/5 Castle of Blood
10/6 Dracula (1930)
10/7 Curse of the Werewolf
10/8 Paranoiac
10/9 Brides of Dracula
10/10 Evil of Frankenstein
10/11 Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
10/12 Dolls
10/13 The Black Cat (1934)
10/14 Pin
10/15 Dracula's Daughter
10/16 The AntiChrist
10/17 Cat O'Nine Tails
10/18 House of Dracula
10/19 The Mummy's Curse
10/20 The Mummy's Ghost
10/21 Land of the Dead
10/22 High Tension
10/23 Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman
10/24 The Innocents
10/25 Horror Hotel
10/26 Alone In the Dark
10/27 Werewolf of London
10/28 Nightmare (1962)
10/29 Just Before Dawn
10/30 Tourist Trap
10/31 From a Whisper To a Scream

Mission completed: 31 horror films in 31 days, all DVD's in my collection that I hadn't watched before. I know - nowhere near 100, but I have a job and other stuff going on...

Too bad Hastings doesn't do their $0.49 rentals anymore. Basically any VHS rental that was more than 2 or 3 years old was fair game. There was a limit of 8 movies that you could have out at a time, and there was one summer where I rented the limit about twice a week. I'd just load up on 8 random movies that I'd never seen before. One trip I might do horror, one trip sci-fi, one trip foreign, or just mix it up. I still don't think I watched 100 movies in any given month, that's just crazy.

Sounds like a cool idea. Wish I could join just to watch wall-to-wall horror but there's too much competition for my time right now.

Good luck to the participants... may the most fiendish win.

No way I'll get 100, but I do plan on watching only horror movies in October. In the last few weeks, I have bought a ton of Hammer titles, Vincent Price gems, MGM double features, and Classic Monster dvds. I have enough to watch, but finding the time is going to be difficult. Oh well, it'll be fun to watch a nice variety.

02. Night of the Living Dead, 1968 (10/1)
03. Cabin Fever, 2002 (10/2)

05. Candyman, 1992 (10/3)
06. The Amityville Horror, 2005 (10/4)
07. The Fly, 1986 (10/5)
08. The Fly II, 1989 (10/6)
09. The Fly, 1958 (10/8)
10. Return of the Fly, 1959 (10/8)
11. The Fog, 1979 (10/9)
12. Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, 1932 (10/10)
13. The Curse of Frankenstein, 1957 (10/15)
14. High Tension, 2003 (10/15)

Lets see here, going through a divorce, clinically depressed, hell all i do on the weekend is sit in the dark and watch movies anyway. I could probably do 100 with just weekend viewing. Though i don't know if it is going to help me healthwise, but to hell with it.

I will try, but I know I will not reach 100 (WAF negates any chance of that). I have 60-100 horror genre DVDs in my library, depending on how you define horror, and am purchasing several more from the DDD AB sale as well. I'll just pledge 25. I know, I'm a lightweight.

BTW, sorry to hear about your sitch, paradicelost. Stay strong, man, it gets better. I got divorced back in '95, and things looked pretty bleak for almost a year. If you're depressed, get help. NOW. I got a therapist and some zoloft, and I was stable, depression-free, and off the drug in six months. Feel free to email me if you need to talk.

I'll probably not be watching many horror films (not very many in my backlog), but I'll post my numbers for October for the hell of it. I keep track of my viewing habits with DVDProfiler, and so far this year, I've watched over 400 movies, with a couple getting repeat viewings. At the beginning of the year, I was getting in 3 a day, but it's slowed down a little since my promotion.

EDIT: Haven't updated this in a couple of weeks, so I'll go back through DVDProfiler and add in everything I've watched. I've been watching some X-Files thoughout the month, and am almost through with season 1. I don't declare something as "watched" until the main feature is completed though. That means either the movie, or all episodes if it's a TV show.

My wife and I are moving in a couple weeks, so that may eat into my horror flick time but I will do my best. I am glad most horror flicks are 90 mins or less.....

Is October not the best month of the year??? Fall, playoff baseball and Halloween.... All the things that makes life good!

I will aim for the 31 flicks in October, but that may be impossible too, between moving, baseball, school, work, movie shoot etc.....

Playoff baseball pretty much takes me out of the running for this.... but I'll post my meager totals.... Course, if I keep sniffing my new Book of the Dead I might convince myself otherwise.

10/1 - The Muppet Movie (1979)
10/2 - The Haunted Palace (1963) (1)
10/3 - Tower of London (1962) (2)
