What Are Some Good "Safari" Films On DVD?
After watching King Solomon's Mines('50) the other night....I got pretty turned on to the whole safari adaventure theme. however, in this genre, my knowledge is thin. instead of doing research....I thought I could learn a thing or two from you guys here in the forum.
I'm into the ones maybe from the 30's through to the 60's. I like the tribal threats, fears of being cooked in a pot, lost jungle treasure, great white hunter stuff and maybe some decent wildlife footage. please, could you list some of your fave titles and maybe explain why? and of course, if they are available on dvd....and any region will do.
Right now aside from the one mentioned above and the original Tarzan and Jungle Jim collections.....I don't think I have much. now I really want to get a "Safari/Jungle Adventure" section going in my library.
So list away!!

DVD Talk Limited Edition
The Naked Prey (1966) starring and directed by the late Cornel Wilde is a good one. It's not out on DVD but I thought I read a rumor that Paramount will be releasing this sometime.

Ghost in the Darkness is good...
Greystoke: Tarzan has some pretty "real" / visceral safari action going on, for a short part of the movie. Am I the only fan of this movie here??

My favorite safari movie is definitely Hatari, with John Wayne in one of his best performances (IMHO).
Another that hasn't been mentioned yet that I LOVE is White Hunter, Black Heart, the Clint Eastwood flick from 1990. Although this falls outside of your time range, Gut, if you haven't seen this you should give it a spin. I feel it's underrated, with one of the best endings I've ever seen. Stunning, in my opinion. It's a little slow at the beginning, but the references to African Queen are fun for classic movie enthusiasts and the payoff is the terrific ending...

You mentioned the Tarzan movies - well, you probably alaready have these, but in case you don't:
The other 6 Johnny Weismuller Tarzan movies not included in the recent R1 box set are available in R4, on two separate DVDS, each with three movies. Very cheap from ezydvd.

and Exister...nice "jungle" folder....I marked a few down. Alpha and jungle seem to go together.
..and thanks for the heads-up on The Naked Prey. never seen this and hope it arrives on dvd soon.
