I'm looking to buy a DVD player that can play VCD's, it will be used to play VCD's most of the time and DVDs occasionally. My original player, Toshiba 2109, doesn't have this VCD capability. I'm looking for a similarly priced model that can and am looking at the Toshiba 1200 and Sharp DV-710U. Does anyone have experience with these models?

We use Phillips at my work and they both have CDV capabilities. I'm not too sure on the ones you have mentions although you can probably check into it on soundandvision.com.

No one likes the JVC 501 because of the horrible firmware. Do a search for the 501 and you will see dozens of posts regarding disc X, Y, and Z not working. I have never seen a player with more headaches.. short of maybe the Oritron.

Most new DVD players can play VCD. All new sonys have the ability for sure, I think its kind of standard now.

i have a toshiba 3109 and it says it can play VCD's, however, it can't play recordable media. I have found some that worked on there, but they were old discs, don't even know the brands. Anyone know any that WILL work???

Most will play VCD's but most WON'T play CD-R's, The Pioneer DV-525 plays every disc I ever fed it. I have an Apex that plays everything as well.

I have the Toshiba 2109, it cant play VCDs. Anyways, its not that worth it. VCDs are a combo of VHS and DVD. Im wondering if theres a switch or something to turn on the VCD function, because if you type in ZOOM606ZOOM it shows your info of the DVD player, and it says 'VCD - OFF', so i was wondering if you can somehow go inside and like turn ON the vcd function. Can you turn on the VCD function manually???
