No Thanks! The 70's Punk Rebellion
Has anyone picked up this Rhino compilation? I'm usually not much into compilations but this one looks really good. It's four discs and contains a broad swath of the best punk of the era. The Jam, The Buzzcocks, The DKs, The Damned, Black Flag, X, Dead Boys and even Television, The Talking Heads and Gang of Four.
I have a ton of this stuff on record but I'm curious to hear some of it on CD. I'm mainly curious about how the tracks sound (good mastering etc.)
Here's a link to the set:

i don't own it but hear its great.
heres the end of the allmusic.com review that might make you purchase the album
Finally, if a collector is wondering whether it's worth the expense to buy this box, there are three rare singles that make their debut here: the aforementioned Television and Patti Smith singles, "Little Johnny Jewel" and "Hey Joe [version]," plus an early single version of the Pretenders' "The Wait." (Note: "Little Johnny Jewel" was released nearly simultaneously on an expanded reissue of Television's Marquee Moon.) For those that can afford it, that's reason enough to pick up the set
the only stuff thats not on here is by the sex pistols

I already have all those songs (duh) but it looks like a nice set anyway.

I look at this box every time I'm in a record store. They did a kick butt job from what I can see with the track listing. I can't justify buying this since I own a great deal of these songs, but I'm curious if the booklet makes the box set. Might be a decent used pickup down the road.
I just bought the first Nuggets box, Story of Jamaican Music box and the Have a Nice Decade box. I haven't gone through all those yet.

Is it me, or does a lot of this seem like a retread of the DIY series Rhino released a decade or so back?
(Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

I've been meaning to pick this up. How is the "booklet" that comes with it?

The sound seems excellent to me, but I haven't played it on my main stereo.
The booklet is very nice. It's 116 pages with two essays/overviews of the scene and a nice track by track commentary by Ira Robbins and Dave Schulps. There are hundreds of photos.
I think my copy was around $35-40 the first week it came out from Best Buy. It was a present, but I remember directing my wife to the sale.

Thanks for the info on this. Ira Robbins is quite possibly my favorite critic. He did the Trouser Press Record guides after his magazine disappeared. Very reliable writer.

If Robbins and Schulps did the liner notes, this is probably worth picking up just for the booklet.

I have every edition of the Trouser Press record guides and they were quite a help back in my vinyl hunting days.
I thought his name would prick up some ears so I made sure to mention that.

You were right, my ears perked right up seeing Robbins' name mentioned.
