"Return of the King" TE...Buy or Rent???

I am so torn and I need your help.

I know I will be buying the "ROTK: Extended Edition" later in November when it comes out as I am now a true convert to them. Hope to get rid of my other 2 theatrical editions as well.

So with it coming on Tuesday, don't know whether to spend the money to wacth it probably the one time I will (the movie) and probably not watch the extras at all or rent it. The pros to buying would be leisure to watching, maybe I will watch it again. Cons to buying, double dipping. I know I can get $5.00 back and maybe sell off later, but that is work.

So I was wondering what everyone else is doing and help me along in my decision and I am sure many more are thinking the same way I am. Comments and other pros and cons are most welcomed...

Well, let me just relate my experience with the TEs.

When the FOTR-TE came out. I bought it. Only to give it to my sister for Xmas after the EE came out.

When the TTT-TE came out, I realized that the plastic cases were color-coded the same as the EE cases, and my local Wal-Mart had both the TTT-TE and the FOTR-TE in the same up-front display case, both were cheap. I think TTT-TE was like $15, while FOTR-TE was $19. I decided to buy both for three reasons. 1) For the cover-art that the EE didn't have. 2) Collectibility, and 3) For the exclusive extras that the TEs have that I found that I'd miss.

So on Tuesday, when the ROTK-TE comes out, I'll be right there in Wal-Mart buying a copy. And then whenever the ROTK-EE comes out, I'll get that too.

I see no reason to differenciate between the TE and the EE with regards to double-dipping when some people will double-dip on other titles and keep the older versions due to exclusive extras.

One upcoming title that may fall in that category is the Hellboy-SE. Also the eventual Matrix Trilogy boxset. Depending on what's all encompassed within the boxset will determine on whether or not to keep the 2-disc versions of Reloaded and Revolutions. If the boxset pales the 2-disc versions, I'll probably give those to my sister.

You can get the TE for pretty good prices the first week. This will hold you over until the EE comes out and I think there should even be a $5 off or rebate coupon in the EE if you bought the TE. And the extras are different so it's pretty easy for me.

Where's the "neither" choice? I always end up selling my TEs when the EEs come out. I watched ROTK so much when it was out in theaters that this time, I think I'll just save myself the trouble and money and wait on the EE.

So one could say that ROTK was your "Preccciousssss", right?

Well considering that I haven't been to the theaters since TTT in Dec. 2002, DVDs are the only way to go for me lately. With the quick turn around between theatrical release and the DVD release, I just wait for the DVDs. Especially since my local theater has pathetic sound. I think at least one of the 4 theaters in the complex still has just the one monural speaker behind the screen.

I'll rent it. The previous 2 EE's gave me, as a fan of the book, no reason to ever watch the TE's again.

I'll rent it to check out the extra's and watch the movie again. The $5 coupon as you say is a hassle, especially when I have a bunch of coupons for the video rental shop 50 ft from my door.

I stopped renting years ago.

So, I'm buying. Wal*Mart will probably have it for $13.xx and it'll hold me off for the EE. Plus different extras. Plus I lend out movies to friends, so this way they can have a choice

I'm in the same position as you scott1598.
Buy at Target $15 - free batteries($5) - free popcorn ($2) - rental cost ($4) - rebate ($5) - resale ($10) = + $11
So... buy it, enjoy for as long as you want and make a few bucks.
Anyway that is my decision. Let us know what you decide.

Extended footage is one of the big additions. Not sure what else will be different from this release but for me the extended footage is a big reason for me to wait. I believe the first movie had at least 30 mins of extra footage and the second movie had close to 45 mins or so of extra footage.

I held off buying the previous 2 TE's but am thinking of picking up the TE Boxset now since it will be nice to have all the originals in my collection as well as the EE's

but what is the point of having both versions? the EE is clearly superior...and extras, well those are just rehashes and can be subjective in appeal.

I personally am buying both. I watch both. When I dont feel like switching discs I watch the TE. When I have time and want to sit down and watch them then I will go the EE route. Both types will get lots of pay over the years in my house, the other releases have. TTT:EE is getting play right now.
