City of God (R2)

I got my copy the other day - it looks and sounds great and all, but the sub-titles are so high up, that they're almost in the center of the screen - with a lot of room left over at the bottom of the image. Is this normal? I've watched a lot of subtitled films, and I've never seen this before - it's really distracting.

The R3 disc doesn't have this problem.

Yeah, but isn't the R3 disc non-anamorphic? Or is that the R4 disc? guh... now I'm all confused.

Have you watched a lot of the film? I know that the subtitles at the beginning of the film are at the top because of credits and other writing on the screen. Once the credits are over, the subtitles should return to their "normal" placement. If they don't, then, yeah, you've got a messed up disc.

Yeah, I watched it all the way through - and I'm not talking about the subtitles during the credits. The regular subs have about 25% of the picture below them. But how could this be a "messed up disc"? Wouldn't they all be like this?

I've only seen the R2 UK rental disc, but the subs on that were positioned far too high, were poorly timed, and offered a so-so translation. Bit disappointing if that is what they went with in the end retail product.

Well, I don't know what to say, then. I just got the R2 UK version this weekend, and I didn't notice anything strange about the subtitles at all. Sorry!

I remember when I watched this that the titles did seem a bit higher than they needed to be. That's just the way the disc is, and if it distracts you another edition will be your only alternative.

Yeah, the timing of the subtitles were pretty bad too. Most of the time they'd appear a few beats after the dialogue was spoken and only for half a second.

I'm gonna try and buy the 2-disc version - now is that R3, or R4?

For just the film itself, the R3 is the one to own. It's anamorphic, DTS, doesn't suffer from PAL speed-up and has very good subtitles. Plus, it's dirt cheap...about $12 delivered.

For extras you probably should go with the R4 Brazilian, but it is non-anamorphic.

City Of God

You can get it from www.yesasia.com and they offer either the movie on it's own or a limited pack with a City Of God T-shirt (all really cheaply priced).

I've got both the R1 and R3HK City of God DVD's. I compared them both (and even took about 15 identical screenshots of each) and the R3HK is pretty damn good compared to the R1 release. It's not progressive like the R1 and the color and detail levels might be a tad bit lower than the R1, but it does have a DTS track. But it also lacks the very nice documentary...

Does the Brazilian R4 2 discs set have subs on the doc and extras? I think I will get that one if it does. Anyone know a good site for it? $24 on this site; any other site where it is cheaper?

thanks

Not really, if you check ebay, you may be able to get it for around $18 or so. BTW, some places are saying that it is 1.85 anamorphic and others say 4:3. Perhaps someone who is very competent with their players' setup can confirm which is actually the case for the R4. I don't have a 16:9 monitor, so it is difficult to tell.

I ordered the R2 City of God from CD-Wow and received the following message:

We are temporarily out of stock of this title. We do hope to be able
to dispatch this item to you on the 5/03/2004.

I'm not familiar with the format they use - is this May 3rd or March 5th? If May 3rd, I'll want to order elsewhere since I anxious to see it sooner than later.
