Rating the star trek films. How would you rate them?

I was just watching the new star trek V dvd and I was surprised by how much I liked the film (up until the meeting god who is not really god part)

Here is how I would rate the original cast's movies:

1- The Wrath of kahn
the classic of the series. action packed, well written & most memorable.

2- The Voyage home
the most fun of the bunch.

3- The Final Frontier
all things considred, it's very well done and acted.

4- The Undiscovered Country
most like the t.v. show.

5- The Search for spock
interesting premise, somewhat boring film.

6- The Motion picture
pretty flat, probably because of robert wise's stately direction.

And the Next Generation cast's movies:

1- First contact
very similar to the wrath of kahn. Definetly the most interesting.

2- Generations
the last appearance of kirk.

3- Nemesis
Somewhat different than the other films. More action & sci-fi oriented.

4- Insurrection
Pretty dull. Everyone and everything seems to be on cruise control.

How would you rate them?

Great - Wrath of Khan, Undiscovered Country, First Contact
Very Good - Search for Spock, Voyage Home
Good - The Motion Picture
Not So Bad - Final Frontier, Generations, Insurrection
Execrable or God, What Happened to the Franchise I Used to Love - Nemesis

ST: The Motion Picture - Never saw the whole thing.

ST2: Wrath of Khan - Great with an all-time classic villain.

ST3: Search for Spock - Not bad, but not great.

ST4: The Voyage Home - Biggest piece of crap. Kirk & Co. can go to any godforsaken planet and kick ass with no doubt that they are in charge, yet when they go to their own planet they're bumbling around like idiots and can't even figure out what to do. Phooey.

ST5: The Final Frontier - Another bowel movement.

ST6: The Undiscovered Country: Second best behind Khan. Extra points for Captain Sulu!

Generations - I've still never seen a single episode of ST:TNG, but I still enjoyed the movie fine. Go figure.

Didn't see the others.

Honk!

Erm, that's kind of the point. Yes, it's Earth, but an entirely different one. Yes, I know they went to primitive planets before, but they knew that they were going to strange new worlds. When they went back in time to 20th Century Earth, they probably made the same mistake in judgment you did. That's what's so funny.

My breakdown isnt too far off from what you listed:

Untouchable Goodness:
01) Khan
02) Undiscovered Country

Really, they should get Nick Myers to do more trek films. He's clearly got the vision that's best for the series. Of course, would he put up with all the studio bullshit? Can a good Trek film still be made?

Pretty good, fun little movies:
03) Search for Spock
04) Voyage Home

Spock is probably the strongest of the Odd numbered movies. I think it suffers from Return of the Jedi syndrome, where a very passable movie is forced to follow up an all time classic.

Pretty bad, yet still watchable:
05) Final Frontier
06) Motion Picture

Even with the touch ups that they did for Motion Picture's special edition, the film still moves pretty slowly. There's a lot more that makes sense now, but it still needs some heavy editing. Final Frontier is a pretty bad Star Trek film. However even though it fails, it fails as a trek film. That's more than could be said for the Next Generation movies.

How the Mighty Have Fallen:
07) Trek VII through the end of the series

Oh lord, why hast thou forsaken me?

I would probably bumble around. However, I have never visited strange new worlds, seeking out new life and new civilizations, boldly going where no man has gone before, so I have no experience in situations like that. My point was that Kirk & Co. have exactly that type of training and experience dealing with Klingons and Romulans and the rock thingy and the salt beast and the white furry ape with the rhino horn and the flying pancakes that leech onto your back, and etc., so it doesn't stand to reason that after all that they would be so inept dealing with other humans on their own planet. Kirk sees a sparkling white cloud that drinks blood, and he kicks its ass, but he sees a teenager with a mohawk and a boombox and he's totally at sea.

1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - The movie that got me interested in Star Trek at all. Before that, I might have seen TMP on cable or something but remembered it being boring. So, Khan made Star Trek for me a lot more like Star Wars. Montalban is also classic in this. Director Nicholas Meyer is pretty much responsible for a lot of the good parts of Star Trek.

2. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country - Another Nicholas Meyer-directed film. A proper close to a legendary story and cast. Lots of great performances by Christopher Plummer and David Warner. I love the USSR-Klingon symbolism.

3. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - Like others have said, it's the most fun of the series. And it also brought a lot of non-fans to the Star Trek world. I think it's also the highest-grossing Star Trek film to date. I love the comedy here. It's a lot more situational than the comedy in The Final Frontier. Nimoy shows himself to be a competent director and went on to make other successful comedies.

4. Star Trek: First Contact - Definitely the best of the Next Generation cast. The Borg in the film is priceless. Also interesting was the courting of Data. I also loved the scene where Picard goes ballistic about the Borg with Lily Sloane. Alfre Woodard and James Cromwell are great actors but were used sparingly. But, Alice Krige was great as the Borg Queen.

5. Star Trek III: The Search For Spock - This holds a special place in my heart because this really sets the tone for the Klingon race. Klingons were featured in TMP, but they are really fleshed out here. Christopher Lloyd was awesome as the first memorable modern Klingon. Nimoy's debut as director is a pretty good one.

6. Star Trek: Generations - Although it's lambasted by a lot, I actually liked this story. Picard getting emotional about the loss of his nephew was really well done. Malcolm McDowell definitely lended a darker edge to the movie. Especially when he manhandles those Klingons. Including Kirk in this was a bit forced but it was still classic to have those two different types of captains on the screen together.

7. Star Trek: Nemesis - Yet another film that the fans hate, I thought it was an okay film. Data's story wasn't as compelling as I thought it was going to be. Tom Hardy did an excellent job as Shinzon. I think he should have a great future as an actor. The scenes with Shinzon and Picard were great. The way their story unraveled basically ended up in a ship-to-ship fight at the end (much like WOK). A little too predictable. But an interesting battle nonetheless.

8. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - Watching this film again hasn't swayed my opinion of it. The one contribution to the entire series is the precedence for muscle-bound actors to play Klingons. That was cool in and of itself. So, I guess the future "Klingon Cleavage" was inevitable. But, Shatner shows his inexperience here in the director's chair. The comedy was generally unfunny. The inital rock climbing was interesting though. And the "I'll die alone" thing was nice although wrapped up in another movie. In the end, the whole God thing was a farce and the ending was terrible. Laurence Luckinbill was great as Sybok though, although it seems this film pretty much ended his career.

9. Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Man, movies haven't been called a "motion picture" for a while. Well, as great as Robert Wise is, this film ended up being too cerebral for most. The recent director's cut is a notch above what it was, this is still a little hard to watch on a regular basis. I never cared for the Ilia story. And Stephen Collins has an acting style that is a bit too much like Shatner. Good acting though.

10. Star Trek: Insurrection - Okay, this is not a bad movie by any means. But, this would have been a great TNG episode. But, it lacks scope as a movie. Having F. Murray Abraham and Anthony Zerbe seemed to be slam dunks, but I don't think their characters were meaty enough. It's nice to see Picard in love but it seems like the movies ignore that Picard and Crusher were lovers as well. A mostly forgettable Star Trek movie.

Great - Wrath of Khan, Voyage Home, Undiscovered Country, First Contact
If only Nicholas Meyer had an interest in the TNG crew.

Very Good - Search for Spock, The Motion Picture
Yes, Motion Picture is slow, but it's the only one of the 10 that really captures a "big screen epic" feel.

Good - Generations
If Kirk died in ship-to-ship combat and saved the galaxy in the process, this would rank a little higher.

Just OK - Final Frontier
Bad Trek, but still Trek

Rather Bad - Insurrection
No comment

OK for an action picture, but in no way a Trek picture - Nemesis

here are my ratings...

The Best:The Wrath of Khan
This was great. Alot of ship to ship action. Lots of great effects and the score of the movie was great too.

Second Best:The Undiscovered Country
I thought it was great to see Sulu as captain. He deserved it. And the ship to ship was awesome.

Third Best: Search for Spock
Just had emotion and was creative destroying the ship.

Fourth best:Generations
Awesome to see Kirk and Picard in the same movie. Some what passing the torch. It would have been better if Kirk died in ship to ship.

Fifth Best:Voyage Home
Great comedy and awesome to see the blend of todays life with their future personality.

Now onto the annoying

Most retarded: The Motion Picture
HUH..... very dull and blah.....

Most crazy movie but could have been better: Nemisis
the trailer was great but the movie sucked. It could have been better. Could have been better ship to ship battles.

Good but not as great: First Contact
Nice movie but alittle slow

Bad movie:The Final Frontier
Nice concept but boring.

Huh award for best Huh:Insurrection
Huh..... what the..... huh..... wait....Jack Daniels helped me get through this one.

I am not a Star trek fan at all, so I have an entirely different point of view and reaction on these flicks:

GENERATIONS-why does everyone hate this flick? I thought Picard's scenes were the most emotionally engaging of any Trek film
THE MOTION PICTURE-directed with epic style by the great Robert Wise
THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK
THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY
THE WRATH OF KHAN
THE FINAL FRONTIER
FIRST CONTACT
NEMESIS
INSURRECTION

TOS

01. The Wrath of Kahn

02. The Undiscovered Country

03. The Voyage Home

04. The Motion Picture (* I know it is a bit boring at times. However, when taken in respect to the time it was made I rate it higher than most people. This was the first movie and had nothing but a long cancelled show to go by. As a ST:TOS fan, it was very exciting to see the new ship and the cast back together again. I just wish they had a better story, which wasn't just an upgraded version of one of the TOS episodes.)

05. The Search for Spock ( * Well....At least they found him )

06. The Final Frontier ( * This could have been a lot better. But poor direction and a weak script made weaker by massive budget constraints assured it to be the mess that it is. )

TNG

01. Generations ( * Only because it has Kirk, Scotty and Chekov )

02. First Contact

03. Nemesis / Insurrection ( I didn't like either just about equally. )

Bring Back Kirk
