how is everquest the 77th richest nation?

77th richest “nation” on the planet with a per-capita GNP that outstrips China and India (Castranova, 2002).
no idea what the quoted text is, or the cited quote, but how can this be possible?

Damn, that looks like a fun class. Too bad I just graduated. From the same school. From the same department. One more year in school and I could have been playing video games for college credit.

Consider that players earn money from killing monsters, sellings items obtained from monsters, selling items created through trade skills (fishing, jewelry, metalurgy, sewing, cooking, brewing), transporting other players, quests, or simply buying items from a player and reselling it at a higher price. Everquest functions in a very capitalistic way. And if you look at how easy it is to make money, the number of players that play in the "world" on all servers, and the amount of time they put in (some play more than 40 hours a week), it's alot of revenue. Of course it isn't real money, and it isn't a real nation. The statement just if it were. But I'm not sure how the Norrath platinum coin fares against the US Dollar .

The difference between EQ and a real economy is that there is a never-ending stream of money put into the economy into the game...and the supply will never run out. It would be interesting to see a game with a limited amount of money in the world.

There is a MMORPG called Project Entropia that has no monthly fee. Instead, you "exchange" your real-life dollars for virtual dollars and that's the economy of the game. An interesting concept, but I tried the game and it was pretty lame.

Whaaa?!

That has got to be one of the wierdest ideas for a game. Hopefully it will not be too successful. Can you imagine punk 14 year olds stealing to fund a video game addiction?

There's another game called "There" that uses real currency, but I don't think it's much more than a MMO chat room.
