Programming Your Own Film Festival

Hey everyone. In order to make the most out of my current DVD collection, I have decided to program a film festival for myself. These screenings will revolve around certain themes or filmmakers. Here’s the festival schedule:

Friday, January 24 - The Upcoming War Against Iraq
* Starship Troopers (Paul Verhoeven, 1997)
* Three Kings (David O. Russell, 1999)

Saturday, January 25 – Classic Film Noir
* The Maltese Falcon (John Huston, 1941)
* Double Indemnity (Billy Wilder, 1944)

Sunday, January 26 – Neo Noir
* Chinatown (Roman Polanski, 1974)
* L.A. Confidential (Curtis Hanson, 1997)

Friday, January 31 – Politics and Sex Scandals
* Wag The Dog (Barry Levinson, 1997)
* Primary Colors (Mike Nichols, 1998)

Saturday, February 1 – The Magnificent Andersons
* Boogie Nights (Paul Thomas Anderson, 1997)
* Rushmore (Wes Anderson, 1998)

Sunday, February 2 – They Came From Outer Space
* Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979)
* Aliens (James Cameron, 1986)

Friday, February 7 – Things You Can Do With a Movie Camera
* Jules and Jim (Francois Truffaut, 1962)
* I Am Cuba (Mikhail Kalatozov, 1964)

Saturday, February 8 – Sex Can Be a Pain in the Ass!
* Last Tango in Paris (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1972)
* Crash (David Cronenberg, 1996)

Sunday, February 9 – Hitchcock in Technicolor
* Rear Window (Alfred Hitchcock, 1954)
* North By Northwest (Alfred Hitchcock, 1959)

Friday, February 14 – Hooray for Hollywood!
* His Girl Friday (Howard Hawks, 1940)
* Casablanca (Michael Curtiz, 1942)

Saturday, February 15 – Crime Time
* Casino (Martin Scorsese, 1995)
* Heat (Michael Mann, 1995)

Sunday, February 16 – One Ring to Rule Them All
* The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Extended Edition (Peter Jackson, 2001)

So that's the plan for the next month. If it works out well, I'll program another schedule for myself.

I did a night comparing and contrasting "violent" films so I screened:
Audition
Series 7: The Contenders

then on another night I decided to do something closely sci-fi and showed:
Donnie Darko
Starship Troopers

Another night I did European crime movies:
Profondo Rosso
Spoorloos

Haven't had one of these in a while because my closest friends are very anti-movie.

But some ideas (themes grouped, based solely on my collection, which can be viewed on the link in my profile):

Killers Who Befriend Young Girls:
- Ghost Dog
- Leon

Spacey as the Salesman
- Glengarry Glen Ross
- Big Kahuna

Gambler's Night (Part One, A Tour of the West)
- Ocean's Eleven
- Hard Eight

Gambler's Night (Part Two, Elsewhere)
- Rounders
- Bob le Flambeur

This Guy is Crazy!
- Maniac LE
- Seul Contre Tous

An Evening with Gael García Bernal
- Amores Perros
- Y Tu Mama Tambien

An Evening with Death
- Seventh Seal
- Weekend at Bernie's
(or should it be vice-versa)

War! War! War! War! War!
- Apocalypse Now (original)
- Thin Red Line
- Idi i Smotri
(a looong afternoon and evening)

Maybe it's just me, but every time I watch two films in a night (which lately has been just about every night), I try to pick two films that have very little in common. Otherwise a little too much of one topic may bore me. Like I wouldn't watch two thrillers/horror movies in a row, or 2 war films or 2 films starring the same actor or whatever...

but maybe that's just me.

Before Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back came out, knowing it would be full of inside jokes and references, I had wanted to watch the first 4 films of the increasingly inaccurately titled Jersey Trilogy (name that reference ). I didn't get the chance, but now I have the whole set and will eventually have SmithFest:

Clerks
Mallrats
Chasing Amy: CC
Dogma SE
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

I could also insert Clerks: Uncensored (the TV cartoon) before J&SBSB, although that's not a feature film.

I could also have a WoodyFest:

Take the Money and Run
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex (but were afraid to ask)
Annie Hall
Everyone Says I Love You

Come to think of it, I've got to get cracking with this.
