Who here has bought a game before buying the system?
I bought Waverace before the N64 when it first came out (back then N64 and the games were very scarce because of high demand + low supplies).
I am buying Steel Battalion before an xbox.
I think those were the only 2.

I had SSX Tricky, NBA Street, Parappa the Rapper 2, and Tiger Woods 2002 before I had my PS2. In my case though, it was because I had access to a PS2 from down the hall.

I had Super Smash brothers for GC before I got the system. Likewise, I purchased Halo and Oddworld before getting the Xbox. And I had FFX and GTA3 prior to getting the PS2. It all comes down to where I can find the best deals. The games I could usually get earlier with in-store coupons and gift certificates. The consoles I bought online. When I bought them, there were few deals to be had on the actual system.

I pre-ordered Resident Evil and had it sitting on my shelf for a month before I bought a GameCube(was waiting on price drop). It killed me seeing it on my shelf that whole time......
I bought Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X, Devil May Cry, and Gran Turismo 3 two months before I bought a PS2(also waiting on price drop).
I have the imported Bio Hazard: Director's Cut, but don't have a mod chip in my PSX to be able to play it. It's been on my shelf for a few months now. One of these days I'll get my PSX chipped......

Towards the end of the last generation I wanted to buy a PSX. I was looking around on the internet for good deals on a system but couldn't really find one. I found a lot of great deals on games though. So by the time I actually got a PSX I already had like 5 or 10 games. I also bought a few GBA games before my GBA arrived in the mail.

This doesn't fit the situation perfectly, but I thought I'd mention it anyways. I got a GameCube in August, and I had planned to get my girlfriend a GBA for Christmas. Sometime in October I picked up the link cable, even though I didn't buy the GBA until last weekend.

I had Rogue Leader a week before I had my Gamecube, but this isn't unusual since the game came out one week before the system.
I bought Halo recently but I don't have an Xbox to play it on. Okay, I do, but my wife isn't giving it to me until Xmas.

I bought RE when it released (PM'd at BestBuy down to $39.99 then used a $5 off coupon) but waited until after the price drop and my birthday to pickup a GC with gift certs...

I bought Vice City because of the reviews and the sale price I found ($35), before I bought my PS2.
I actually still haven't opened my PS2 yet, as KB hasn't delivered the promised free accessory pack and I want to be able to easily return it if I change my mind.

My preorders for Halo and DOA3 arrived a week before the Xbox shipped last year, so I went ahead and paid for them and picked them up then.

I've done that a few times. I bought Halo before an XBOX, Mario 64 before my N64, and SSX, and Madden 2001 before my PS2.

To add to this thread, I picked up DOA2:HC before my PS2 was purchased.

My folks (sorry... Santa) bought me Tiger Heli for Christmas back in '85... I was stoked. But as the presents under the tree began to dwindle, the realization set in that I wasn't getting the NES console. I asked my folks about it, and then said that I spent enough time over at my friends' homes, I could just play it there.
For my birthday (in May '86) I finally got the system.
