Saw this theatrically last Friday and it was gorgeous viewing, but the theatre's sound was atrocious so I cannot wait for the DTS to envelop me at home!
cheers, Tony Block

Danka! Danka!
I though of A.I. too while watching this. In another of the reviews I cited in my previous post, the reviewer said something to the effect of (I'm paraphrasin' here), that Metropolis was the film that A.I. wanted to be.
nice review & cheers, Tony Block

Well, I liked the film but think some of the enthusiasm for it must be overstated. Here's my take:

Is this movie really that good? I'm asking as a non-anime person. I've only seen Akira and (maybe, dont remember) The Ghost in the Shell. I dont remember really enjoying either one (don't bash me). But I saw Metropolis 2 disc at Fry's for 16.99 and was wondering if it really is that good. I saw the reviews from other sites. Wanting to get reviews from dvdtalkers.

i dislike almost all the anime i'm exposed to ( by a friend who lives and breathes the stuff).
i do like some of miyazki's material, and i can tolerate cowboy bebop.
that said,
i thought Metropolis was GREAT!
stylistically, it looks much more like a western/european type of animated film (in fact the character design reminds me an awful lot of tin-tin).
enjoyed the story, REALLY enjoyed the visuals and the audio and for $17, this was one of the most pleasant surprises as far as blind dvd purchases go.
you really should check it out.
For $17, even if you don't like it, you'll be able to get most of this back on the used market, once the sales prices end ( i believe this has a $29.95 msrp)

Also if you like traditional Nawlins Dixieland Jazz, the soundtrack will knock your socks off. And if you like electronica, there a couple of original instrumental electronic compositions, during the firefightin' and a chase scene that are excelllent, and finally there's a Ray Charles song that'll blow you away.
cheers, Tony Block
BTW, does anyone know if there is an import CD of the soundtrack, or any plans to release it in the U.S.A. domestically?

I'm a casual anime fan, and this movie is bizarre. But it's an alright watch. Maybe my opinion will change the second time around, but I don't think it quite merits all the accolades it got.

Honestly, I love anime, but I couldn't get completely into Metropolis. Parts of it I really liked - the film certainly is glossy and the music is fantastic, but the animation style bothered me and the plot is somewhat confusing with all the levels. It did get interesting towards the end, though. I'd really suggest it as more of a rental for casual anime fans, rather than a blind purchase.
