I use a Microsoft Intellimouse explorer... if you do online gaming in the form of shooters (you mention Jedi Knight) against others and not just single player, you definitely need an optical mouse to compete against the kids out there on a cable modem with a 40ms ping otherwise they will clean your clock.

I use a Logitech Dual Optical... If you are going the Microsoft route.. Be sure to get a 3.0 mouse (the newer ones) and not the cheaper 1.0's. The 1.0's have some skipping problems and the newer ones dont . But I really like the dual optical, its really smooth and was surprised at how much better it performed from my previous Intellimouse 1.0. Oh, and dont get a wireless mouse if you are playing games, especially first person shooters. The lag from the mouse pretty much kills you.

*edit*
Also, go down to your local CompUSA or computer store and see which mouse feels right for your hands. You really dont want to end up buying a mouse that doesn't feel good.

I have heard that truly hardcore gamers like the Razor by a large majority. I haven't seen one in person, but I have heard several people raving about them. They cost 90-100$ or so.

The Razor is the best gaming mouse... for its time. But the optical mouses (mice?) simply offer better performance and are roughly 50% cheaper.

I use the MS Wheel optical mouse. I really like it a lot. When I was playing Max Payne it felt soooo much better then a regular mouse.

if you are a serious gamer, get a boomslang razor 2000. I costs $90, but is by far the most precise mouse you can buy. Also look into some of those multidimensional joysticks. They are a pain to program and get used to, but once you do, you do about 90% of the commands with one hand...

I use the Microsoft Wireless Optical mouse for rocket arena all the time with no lag at all. it's shaped to fit your hand which makes it very comfortable. It's also kinda cool to play Quake in your kitchen when the computers in the bed room

I use a Logitech Trackman Marble Wheel (trackball) as my mouse. I find it a pain in the butt to use a mouse. Of course all this is personal preference so I don't expect anyone to agree with me on that. But I find a trackball much easier to aim in FPS games than a mouse if that helps anyone.

My roommate had one of these and liked it at first, but the mouse just fell apart on him. Roomate was hardcore gamer (at least 4 - 8 hours a day on a class day) and has been through at least 4 or 5 mice in a year.

Personally I use a logitech dual optical mouse and don't have a problem with it.

There's also the twitch problem that seems to be inherint with an optical mouse that can be a problem for some. (When you reposition the mouse, the mouse w/ball can keep the ball moving in one directoin as you reposition it in another direction. With a optical mouse, if you don't lift it high enough off the surface, it can still track) (hopefully that makes some sense to people )
