Game of the Year - 2018 edition
With only two more major releases this year (Just Cause 4 and Smash Bros.), I figured it would be good to get a thread started since most sites are going to be rolling out their lists over the next week or two. We can post those links if people want too. I tried to include every major release this year, but obviously feel free to choose Other as well if yours isn't listed.
For me, nothing came close to God of War. Everything with that game felt nearly perfect to me. Great story, challenging yet fun combat, massive and beautiful enviroments, etc. This is a game that will easily be in my top three of this generation.
Second and third places would go to Forza Horizon 4 and Spider-Man.
Previous years:
2017 - 2016 - 2015 - 2014 - 2013

Only played three,
God of War
Detroit: Become Human
Far Cry 5
and have Spider-man and Tomb Raider on deck. Of those three, I'd rank them in that order.
Overall, God of War was the most epic game I've played since the original Halo. Maybe, not the best game since then(that would probably go to Bioshock), but easily the most epic on a grand scale. So I doubt anything in the poll can come close even if I were to play them all.

God of War...just finished The Journey...one of the most overall satisfying games I've played in a long time...story, design, art, layout, combat mechanics....near flawless across the board.

On the list I've played:
God of War
Spider-Man
Red Dead Redemption 2
Forza Horizon 4
Celeste
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
I own but never really played enough of: Sea of Thieves, Black Ops IIII, and Celeste.
God of War is a no brainer for me, just the perfect combination of excellent and fun game play and an intriguing story, especially for fans of the series. Especially as someone extremely skeptical from the early trailers, the direction the developers took with Kratos was brilliant.

Easily RDR2 - even if you hate games from Rockstar - it's still the best.

As for my choices, I would also pick God of War. It really is a magnificent title. So huge, so well done. I admit that I haven't finished it, but not because it wasn't great. It's just so huge and I took a break that got extended. Need to get back to it. But what an awesome, superbly made game. And NOTHING in gaming beats the feeling of sending out the Axe, slicing an enemy in half then having it return to your hand with a satisfying THUMP to the Dual Shock.
Second Place would be Octopath Traveler. A really beautiful, well done Switch RPG. I can see myself playing that on the go for months to come. Such a cool game, one of my all-time favorite JRPGs.
Third place would be Spider-Man. Just a great game. Nothing too deep but what a fun game. Looks great and really nails what it might feel like to be Spider-Man and swinging around Manhattan. Loved every minute of it (well, except chasing those damn pigeons).

And I apologize - I read it wrong - I thought he was saying "With only two major releases this year" I read it too fast. But even then, I wasn't calling him out or anything.

What is the Other game you voted for? Dragon Ball FighterZ? Unravel Two? (I'm trying to think of some of the other big games I didn't have room for on the poll)

Re: Game of the Year - 2018 edition
I voted for Dead Cells. It's easily my most played game of the year, and biggest surprise. I love it.
God of War comes in a very close second. I think it's the most epic, polished, and generally well made game I've ever played.
Spider-Man's up there, but it gets knocked down a spot by the music that plays every single time you start swinging through the city. It was fine for the first 10 hours or so, but it got old, and bothered me to the point that I ended up turning the music down entirely for the remainder of the game.

So Dragon Quest XI would be my vote.

Re: Game of the Year - 2018 edition
I was half tempted to put Shadow of the Colossus on the list since it's a remake and not just a remaster or port, but figured that would cause some debate since it's not an original release. They did such a fantastic job with that game.

Gamespot's Game of the Year went to Red Dead Redemption 2.

In 2010, GameSpot's Game of the Year was none other than Red Dead Redemption. Eight years later, that game remains one of our all-time favorites, and leaving John Marston behind to step into Arthur Morgan's story wasn't easy. Red Dead Redemption 2 ended up being everything we could have wanted in a prequel, but it's also a moving, often heartbreaking, and oddly hopeful story that stands independently of its predecessor--and that's only part of the reason why Red Dead 2 is GameSpot's 2018 Game of the Year.

Here is their full top 10

Polygon is also counting down their top 10. I'm sure they will get some flack since RDR2 landed #6 on their list.

And Giant Bomb should start putting up their massive lists starting on Monday
