NBA 2K19’s Cover Star is LeBron James, for the second time.
NBA 2K19 will launch Sept. 11, 2018 and 14-time NBA All-Star LeBron James will make his second cover appearance for 2K Sports’ flagship series, the publisher announced today.
The game will launch for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.
The launch on Switch is noteworthy as it’s the second straight year NBA 2K is on Nintendo’s lead console. NBA 2K13 launched for Wii U in 2012 but did not return the next year.
James is currently involved in the NBA Finals (for the eighth consecutive year) where his Cleveland Cavaliers trail 2-0 to Golden State. He appeared on the cover of 2013’s NBA 2K14, the franchise’s debut on this console generation.
Dreamcast aficionados will no doubt appreciate the console’s cameo in the video announcing James’ cover. The rappers Rapsody, Jerreau and 2 Chainz also appear in the poetry slam/biography/highlight reel.
NBA 2K19 will again launch with two editions, a $59.99 standard edition carrying the Sept. 11 launch date and no extra goodies, and a $99.99 20th Anniversary Edition loaded with digital content for use in the game’s expansive MyPlayer and MyTeam modes.
That one is available Sept. 7. 2K Sports also announced that NBA 2K19: The Prelude will be available for download on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One beginning Aug. 31, 2018.
The Prelude is a free introduction to the game’s MyCareer mode, giving players its introductory portions and allowing them to create their basketball star and import him into the main game. The Prelude has been a part of NBA 2K since 2016.

Man, the recent history of the players on this cover has not been good for the incumbent teams...

I never liked the NBA 2K series. Always thought NBA Live was a better franchise, but sadly it was discontinued years back it seems.

I liked 2K back when it first came out, but at least back then you could make an argument for either. I do think they can make some ground up and hopefully give some competition to 2K because this virtual currency stuff sucks; I really hope someday they just completely disentangle single player modes from multiplayer. The major problem is, as a basketball fan, I really only have time for one sim game.

When's the last time you played an NBA game? Like a decade ago? 2K has been better for many, many years now. I mean the reason EA skipped a year was because they were trying hard to play catch up and failed miserably. Even last year's version went to bargain bin prices in record time, and the best thing people said about it was that there were less micro transactions than 2K.

Eh, microtransactions for a basketball game? wtf...

Oh nice, for some reason I was thinking there hadn't been one in a couple years.
Yeah, it was probably like 09 or 10. I didn't play them enough to feel the desire to repurchase the game yearly for just slight changes. Same with Madden for football, etc. I just remember not being a fan of the 2K games, but I had been playing the NBA Live games since the 90s so bias could have played a slight part in it.

And yeah Micro Transactions. These games started implementing virtual currency which you can either buy or earn to upgrade your experience including your avatar that you create. It’s an annoying feature that pretty much every sports game is using.

If you follow the NBA or any sport, the biggest appeal to get the games yearly is the updated rosters. Usually the new game features are very small. It’s way too much of a pain to create new rosters with updated players on your own IMO.

If you just want to play team vs team or most modes, you don't have to bother with VC. And in some sense if people want to spend real money for some shoes for their character that you can barely see, that's up to them. But it does feel like they made progressing in single player, create a player mode much more onerous so you'd almost have to buy VC if you don't want to grind.

Torn. Now do I get the expensive edition with LeBron as a Laker or do I go for the basic edition with the Greek freak?
I still have my Best Buy Gamers Club for another year even though it's defunct, but they're still honoring it, so at least I can get a 20% discount there.

I'm torn a bit too. I bought the Deluxe one the year Kobe was on the cover and basically didn't use any of the extra stuff except the VC (he mini poster especially was a joke). And 2k is one of the only games I've been paying more for digitally just so I don't have to swap out the disk.
Maybe I'll buy it on the Switch and then get the PS4 Lebron version when it inevitably drops in price.

Did anyone buy the 20th Anniversary edition? It was released yesterday. The standard version, which I will be getting, comes out Tuesday.

I was tempted, however I decided not to support the lame practice of having to pay a premium for early release. Last year all preorders got early release. Between that and the ongoing VC crap, screw them.
