R.I.P. Amazon Prime 20% preorder discount (starting 8/28/18)

:( :(

Second, starting on August 28, Prime members will now get a $10 Amazon credit when pre-ordering select games on Amazon.com. This credit can be used on almost anything sold by Amazon.com. This new pre-order benefit is replacing the current discount on physical game pre-orders. All eligible pre-orders placed before August 28 will still receive the 20% discount under the existing benefit once the game is released. For more information and restrictions on this new Prime benefit, click right here.
So, get your preorders in now.

Forza Horizon 4 is the only one I’ve been waiting for, and I already preordered that. This change won’t really impact me since I buy very few games.

Everything Amazon does lately is making me feel better about not turning off my auto-renewal for Prime. I find fewer reasons to shop there lately so why am I paying for a membership?

Yeah, even with GCU my buying of physical games was basically limited to switch titles because I didn't think they'd ever go on sale digitally. Shoot you can get Horizon complete digitally for like under 15 bucks right now. Even the games I did pick up like DB Fighter Z, I kind of wish I just got digitally.

I will miss those Nintendo discounts, though.

I was planning on getting Dragon Quest 11 on PC but with this news I just pre ordered on PS4 for the discount. Although, I order so much on Amazon; the difference between the 12 off a 59.99 game and $10 credit to use on the site is negligible.

You can't pre-order jack on Amazon unless it's digital anyways. This is a huge bummer with GCU going away too.

What do you mean? This pre order bonus was for physical copies only.

Here in Canada it’s worse, as we lost the Best Buy Rewards and now we are losing the 10% discount.

This royally SUCKS. Raise the price of Prime, then cut the benefits. Super. I was buying all my games through amazon, but no longer. Real nice "change."

Sounds like more than one place is cutting benefits. Is the VG customer not as valued as it used to be?

I wonder how the "select games" will work. This would be the better deal for something like the Namco Museum for the Switch ($39.99) if that is included.

Gotta pay for Lord of the Rings Extended Universe somehow.

But I mean, with GCU ending (for those not clever enough to have stockpiled years in advance ), you had to know this was coming, right? Except for maybe Prime Day (and price mistakes), every good deal you'll ever see on Amazon is a Price Match situation.

Probably the same as Best Buy. A handful of titles net you $10 back, most everything doesn't.

Isn't this going to backfire on Amazon and the video game industry? I mean, some people will simply unsubscribe from Amazon Prime while most will stop pre-ordering games and wait until price drops to get them.

I have two games on pre-order and they're both digital versions, so no harm, no foul.

I don't believe that most will wait until price drops.

Did people actually subscribe to Amazon prime mainly for the game discount? It always seemed to me like something tacked on to counter GCU, if you really just wanted discounted games GCU was much cheaper.

I'll also say that I highly doubt GCU was at all profitable for Best Buy, if anything it was a loss for the most part. I'm sure even with Amazon's weight they don't get new games for that much cheaper. And the rumor was that game publishers were pressuring Best Buy to discontinue the program as well. Amazon already has weird beefs with Sony, Nintendo, and Disney with preorder shenanigans.

And they have more data on how people altered their purchasing patterns than anyone else.

And EA. Amazon doesn’t have physical copies of games like Battlefield V for preorder, and basically any physical copies of released games only seem to be available from third party sellers.

Bummer. I had Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection pre-ordered already. Added in Super Mario Party and Mega Man 11 before the discount disappears.

Yet another reason to keep my auto-renew off. Prime really isn’t worth $10 a month to me.

Since they raised the price of prime, my wife and I are talking about canceling our membership. We don't order online like we used to year round (still do at Christmas) because there's not enough value in it to keep it.

Yep. My son buys a ton of games, and has complained about Best Buy and Prime.

He canned Prime because they went to only 10% and also because he wasn't getting the games on release day.

They keep trying to get everybody to invest in this, yet they make it less and less desirable.

Is this a flat $10, or UP to $10? I ask because, wouldn't the SNK and Mega Man be better off with the new program? SNK would only give $8 and Mega Man $6 with the 20% off since they are lower priced games.

I know... You cannot pre-order Red Dead Redemption, Battlefield V, etc as a physical copy right now; digital only (which gets you no discount).

Ah; gotcha. I wouldn't be surprised if they turn up for pre order as soon as this deal switch is made.
