Post Credits Scenes: First Movies to Do Them (Spoilers)
They seem pretty much the norm for any high profile release with a recognizable property nowadays. I'm just curious as to how many may have existed before the trend started back with Iron Man in 2008. The first big one I recall that was a shout out to true fans was in 1985 with Young Sherlock Holmes . I didn't see it in theaters, but my uncle , who was a huge fan of the books, enjoyed it a lot and loved the revelation of Moiarty .
I also recall Master's of the Universe having one that teased a sequel that never happened.

Young Sherlock Holmes was the first one I remember too. The scene started in the credits, but the big reveal was after the credits.

Pro tip - use the Media Stinger phone app to see if a movie has any additional scenes during or after the credits (spoiler free)

The closest Star Wars has come to a post-credits scene is at the end of The Phantom Menace, where you can hear Darth Vader breathing at the very end.
It seemed like the Pirates films kind of made them a big thing again and then the Marvel films ran with it from there, but I could be wrong.

First one that left me craving more ... that teasing cliffhanger feeling ... was The Incredibles. Now I’m kind of numb to it with the MCU.
Oddest one in recent memory was The Grey. That should have played as the closing shot.
Seems like there were some family movies in the 90s that improperly closed the story during the credits. But I can’t think of examples right now.

Part of the answer ties into when credits started being played at the end of movies, instead of at the beginning. Before that, the entire movie was technically "post credits."

So I think The Muppet Movie in 1979 may be the first example of what we would nowadays call a post-credits sequence.
Another note that is that before Iron Man, post-credit scenes were just little jokes or "bonus" scenes that weren't necessary to have been seen. It wasn't until Samuel L Jackson appeared to announce the Avengers Initiative that the post-credit scene may have relevance to the overall franchise.
Something that's also becoming more common is the "mid credits scene." This let a film like The Avengers put a franchise-plot-important stinger in the film, separate from the "movie," but not at the way end of the credits, leaving the post-credit scene to be just a funny joke scene.
For mid-credits stuff, bloopers were often a feature. The Cannonball Run (1981) is probably the earliest US film people remember with bloopers, although director Hal Needham previously did it in the 1978 film “Hooper,” a Burt Reynolds stuntman action-comedy, as well.
I think Jackie Chan was actually inspired by Cannonball Run, in which he played a Japanese driver, to start adding bloopers to the end credits of his films. The earliest example may be Project A (1983), which starts with a highlight reel of clips from the movie, then leads into outtake.
