The Ninth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge - May 1-31, 2018 **List Thread**

The Ninth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge
May 1-31, 2018

This thread is for lists only.
For discussion, go to the May 2018 Make-Your-Own Challenge Discussion Thread.

May is just over a week and a half away, so it's time, once again, to take a look at your dusty, unopened box sets, your unwatched stacks of Blu-rays, DVDs, HD-DVDs, LDs, VHS or Beta tapes, your DVR, your Netflix queue, etc., etc., and decide what you think you should spend 31 days watching. Now's your chance to finally watch all the stuff that didn't fit, or that you just didn't get around to, during the other Challenges.

Since you choose your own Challenge theme, you make the rules.

There are however a few guidelines which everyone should follow.

Challenge Guidelines:

The Challenge runs from May 1 through May 31.

Sure, you can do your May MYOC in September if you want, but the list thread will only be stickied during May, so if you want anyone else to see what you're up to, please try to do it near those dates.

Please state your challenge theme and your challenge goal and rules (if any) at the top of your list(s) in the list thread so others can tell what you're doing.

Please don't duplicate an existing "Official" DVD Talk Challenge.

This guideline is mainly here so we don't subtract from participation in any of the other Challenges, and to encourage participants to focus on genres not already covered by a Challenge, but since everyone's "need to watch" list is different, and you're able to watch stuff that qualifies for one or more of the other Challenges during every other Challenge, you're free to narrow the focus of one of the broader "Official" Challenges.

For example; Say you only collect horror, then you could make your Challenge to watch just horror films, or just horror TV shows, or just zombie films, etc. Or if you have lots of unwatched Sci-Fi, then your MYOC could be just watch Sci-Fi movies, or watch Star Trek shows, or watch TOS, etc.

Here's Trevor's handy-dandy list of Challenges from his "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium thread:

DVDTalk Challenge Schedule

SeptemberCriterionnone
OctoberHorrornone
NovemberComedyHoliday starts week of Thanksgiving
DecemberHolidaynone

Since we already have Monthly "Unwatched Media Pile" Threads, please do not use that as a theme.

During past MYOCs, people weren't happy with this being used as a theme, and I tend to agree that it is a little lazy. So how about giving a little thought to the theme and coming up with something a little more creative, please?

Re: The Ninth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge - May 1-31, 2018 **List Thread**

PRE-CHALLENGE 1970's MOVIES (April 15-30)
Spoiler:

Alien (1979) - Probably the best Sci-Fi/Horror movie of all time. I watched the original theatrical cut which is the Director’s preferred version.

The Big Bus (1976) - A ridiculous parody of the era’s popular Irwin Allen disaster films. Has a decent cast of familiar 70’s B-list stars. There’s some funny scenes, but nothing really hilarious or memorable. Airplane (1980) did it much better.

Dirty Harry (1971) - One of the all time great Cop movies.

Foul Play (1978) - Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn are perfect in this lighthearted homage to Alfred Hitchcock. This movie is a whole lot of fun. It seems to have mostly been forgotten. I'm surprised it doesn't get more love.

Harry In Your Pocket (1973) - James Coburn leads a team of pickpockets. Watching the crew in action and talking about how it all works was really interesting. The romantic storyline was fairly bland.

Heaven Can Wait (1978) - I haven't seen this since the 70's. Beatty carries the movie, but it wouldn't be worth watching without Charles Grodin's hilarious antics.

The In-Laws (1979) - Peter Falk and Alan Arkin are a hilarious comedy duo. This is one of the funniest movies from the 70’s. Serpentine!

King Kong (1976) - Jessica Lange is gorgeous. And it’s great to see the World Trade Center. I forgot how ridiculous this version is. It’s almost a parody. Kong emerging from a giant gas pump wearing a Burger King crown was hilarious.

The Longest Yard (1974) - It seems there were a lot of Prison movies in the 70’s. This was one of the best. Burt Reynolds and some ragtag convicts play football against the sadistic guards. He was always charming in these 70's flicks.

Meatballs (1979) - One of my favorite comedy movies. I loved going to camp, and this brings back many fun memories. Also, I had such a crush on Kristine DeBell back then.

Murder By Death (1976) - A spoof of classic whodunit movies. A group of famous detectives are invited to a big spooky mansion on a dark stormy night to solve a murder mystery. An amazing cast including Peter Sellers, David Niven, Peter Falk, Alec Guinness, Eileen Brennan, Truman Capote, James Coco, Maggie Smith, James Cromwell, Elsa Lanchester, and written by Neil Simon.

Over The Edge (1979) - This is a forgotten classic. The characters are played by real teenage actors. And they dress, act and speak like real teens. It all feels very natural. This film, probably more than any other, reminds me of being a kid in the 70's. Although the end is insanely over the top. It has a great soundtrack of 70's rock.

Rollercoaster (1977) - I love amusement parks. And I frequently went to both Kings Dominion and Magic Mountain back in the 70’s. So I really enjoy watching this movie. It’s cool to see the old parks that have changed so much in the past 40 years. I thought the young daughter looked familiar. Turns out it was 13 year old Helen Hunt.

Skyjacked (1972) - One of the first 70’s disaster films. Watching this film reminded me of how much simpler it was to fly back then. The days when you could get on a plane with a grenade hidden in your sock, the pilot would smoke his pipe, and a pregnant woman orders a bloody mary.

Smokey and the Bandit (1977) - Burt Reynolds and Sally Field were a great comedy duo in the late-70’s. This was their best movie. It might also be Jackie Gleeson’s funniest film, with the iconic character of Sheriff Buford T Justice. This movie still holds up well today. If you're interested in the Diablo Sandwich, here's a great investigative report.

ACTION/ADVENTURE

Pray For Death (1985) - Ninja movies were really popular in the early 80’s. Today, this flick seems pretty hokey and the fight scenes don't hold up. But it was really cool back then.

COMEDY

Charlie Chan and the Curse of the Dragon Queen (1981) - It's amazing this great cast can make a film that's such an awful waste of time. The movie centers around #1 Grandson who's a bumbling fool. Richard Hatch is painfully unfunny. All the slapstick humor falls flat. On the positive side, it has some really cool footage of 70’s San Francisco. Michelle Pfeiffer looks so young.

High Spirits (1988) - An entertaining, lightweight comedy/horror flick. Some of the jokes fall flat, and a few special effects don’t hold up well. But the gothic castle sets are really amazing. And it has a great cast.

Just One Of The Guys (1985) - One of the Top 10 Comedy Movies from the 80’s. For teenage boys, the scene with Joyce Hyser’s boob flash is a close second to the infamous Phoebe Cates topless pool scene from Fast Times At Ridgemond High.

Porky’s (1981) - The father of the modern teen sex comedy. They don’t make them like this anymore.

Porky’s II: The Next Day (1983) - Some good gags. Not as funny as the original. But there’s a few memorable scenes.

Porky’s Revenge (1985) - I’m glad that the original cast stuck together for all 3 movies. But this finale is mostly forgettable. The gags are stupid and there’s hardly any laughs.

Seems Like Old Times (1980) - I wish Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn made more movies together. They had great comedic chemistry.

Valley Girl (1983) - This is the first time I’ve seen the movie since it came out. It’s the perfect 80’s time capsule. The fashion, dialogue, and music and all take me back. Nicholas Cage looks so young, and Elizabeth Daily was freakin' hot.

DRAMA

The Last American Virgin (1982) - This forgotten gem is the antithesis of the John Hughes feelgood teen comedies. A movie where the good guy gets his heart broken. It hit home hard for every geeky teen (like me) who had a crush on a girl outside their league. An awesome soundtrack with The Cars, Journey, Lionel Ritchie, The Police, U2, Devo, Oingo Boingo and REO Speedwagon.

Little Darlings (1980) - Jailbait girls hold a contest to see who's first to lose their virginity at summer camp. Looks like a comedy, but it turns out to be a coming-of-age drama. Kristy McNichol and Tatum O’Neal were huge teen stars in the 70’s-80’s.

HORROR

Friday the 13th (1980) - This classic slasher almost feels like a murder mystery with a faceless killer who isn’t revealed until the final moments. It’s mild compared to 80’s standards with most killings happening offscreen and very little nudity. Still holds up well today as one of the best slashers ever.

Friday the 13th: Part 2 (1981) - A great sequel with more onscreen killing and more T&A. I really like the young fast sackhead Jason, which sets this apart from the other sequels.

Friday the 13th: Part 3 (1982) - The first movie with a traditional Jason Vorhees. He’s big, slow, methodical, unstoppable and wearing a hockey mask. Originally in 3-D, this movie has some cool in-your-face effects. The eyeballs are a classic. It’s also a more laid back 80’s-style popcorn flick than the previous movies.

Friday the 13th: Part 5 (1985) - I hated this movie when I first saw it back in the 80’s. It’s grown on me over the years. But it’s still one of the weakest Friday movies.

SCI-FI/FANTASY

Miracle Mile (1989) - Nuclear War was a big thing in the 80’s. This is one of those forgotten movies that everyone loved. It’s a great film. Check it out if you get a chance.

My Science Project (1985) - I loved this movie. I rented it from the video store dozens of times. My friends and I would frequently quote the hilarious one-liners from Fisher Stevens. It was one of the biggest movies of my teens. But I don’t think I’ve seen it since the 80’s. It’s one of those movies that seems to have been forgotten over the years. Watching it again was a blast.

80's RELATED

Cobra Kai: Season One (2018) - I couldn't imagine this would be such an awesome show. I've seen the original movies so many times. It was a blast watching these characters 30+ years later. Easily my favorite show of the year.

Take Me Home Tonight (2011) - Someone made a list of everything they remember from the 80’s, put it in a blender, and out popped this movie. It’s a collection of random nostalgia. Outside that, I'm not sure why the movie took place in the 80's. The story would have worked just fine in a modern setting.

Oh, Canada!

Films acknowledged as Canadian, not just Americans shooting in Canada for budget reasons.
Each film marked with the Canadian flag has an obvious indication that it is a Canadian setting... flag, or city/town name or other indications.

May 05:
01. Porcupine Lake (2017) ☼ - my iTunes library (Toronto and other locations mentioned and a Canadian flag visible in one scene)
02. The Sweet Hereafter (1997) ☼ - Library DVD (No reference to any location names but BC license plates visible, characters that say 'Eh', Tragically Hip heavily used in the soundtrack, including an eerie remake sung by the young Sarah Polley herself in the closing credits and a kid running with a Canadian flag on his snowsuit.)

May 08:
03. Ice Blue (2017) ☼ - Theater Made right here in Calgary, but no indication of Canada at all. The only city mentioned in the movie was Seattle. So, boo for that, but good movie none the less.

May 10:
04. Happy Birthday To Me (1981) - my Blu-ray No indication of where this is set but the father at one point says he has to go to Calgary. Half points, but no flag.

May 11:
05. Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2000) ☼ - Library DVD Well there's nothing more Canadian than an Inuit movie set in the arctic and filmed in the Inuit language. Amazing accomplishment! No wonder it's on almost everyone's top 10 Canadian films list.

May 12:
06. Colossal (2017) ☼ - my Blu-ray
07. My Bloody Valentine (1981) ☼ - my DVD

May 13:
08. 88 (2015) ☼ - my Blu-ray
09. Stories We Tell (2012) ☼ - Library DVD More or less a documentary about Sarah Polley's mother, told from the perspective of the surviving people in her life, both in Toronto and in Montreal. Shows how everyone has their own perspective of life events and rarely do any two people see things the same way.

May 23:
10. My Winnipeg (2007) ☼ - Library DVD strangely weird, but in a good way. 100% open about being Canadian, obviously.

May 26:
11. Wilby Wonderful (2004) ☼ - Streamed (Roku: Kanopy) Wilby is the name of a small island town on the Canadian east coast. Can't identify yourself as Canadian any better than that!
12. Mon oncle Antoine (1971) ☼ - DVD

May 27:
13. Claude Jutra: An Unfinished Story (2002) ☼ - DVD A documentary about the life of the director of Mon oncle Antoine
14. A Chairy Tale (1957) (9:55) ☼ - DVD An early experimental short film by Claude Jutra.

May 28:
15. Hockey Night (1984) ☼ - Streamed (Roku: Kanopy)

Re: The Ninth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge - May 1-31, 2018 **List Thread**

The "Stale DVD/Blu-Ray" challenge. I'm going to tackle my unwatched pile in the order of the year I first got it. I'll be gone a lot in May so I'm setting a modest goal of at least getting through the 9 I got in 2012. Then on to 2013. I will try to do more or less in order, but leave a little flexibility.

1. Super 8
2. Life During Wartime*
3. Repulsion
4. Battle Royale
5. Kuroneko*

Re: The Ninth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge - May 1-31, 2018 **List Thread**

Audio Commentary + Documentary/Featurette challenge

1st:
1. Strange Behavior (1981)-Commentary by Michael Langhlin, Bill condon, Dan Shor & Dey Young: It was cool to hear how it was making an "American" movie in New Zealand with an Aussie/Kiwi crew. Although, from Langhlin's comments, it was a little hard to believe how so many esteemed film critics & filmmakers praised this film (Pauline Kael & Woody Allen saw this? Really?)
2. Directed by Sidney Lumet: How the Devil Was Made (2008) [Before The Devil Knows You're Dead]-I miss Lumet. Nice to see how accepting he was on shooting digital.
3. In the Beginning Was the End: The Truth About De-Evolution (1976) [Island of Lost Souls-Criterion Collection]-I never knew this was on there!
-----------------------------------------
2nd:
4. Good Time (2017)-Commentary by Josh and Benny Safdie, producer Sebastian Bear-McClard, and actors Taliah Lennice Webster and Buddy Duress: Not nearly as chaotic of a track since so many are involved. For me, the highlights involve all the criminal tricks/tactics that the filmmakers knew of. But the biggest antidote was the consent of putting an episode of COPS to use!
5. The Artist: The Making of an American Romance (2011)/The Locations of The Artist (2011) [The Artist]-This looked like it was going to be standard EPK material, but once Wade Major entered the picture (I miss hearing him talk about film) it redeems itself. The Locations featurette was more up my alley since I'm into that sort of thing. Too bad it ended very abruptly.
-----------------------------------------
3rd:
6. Downfall (2004)-Commentary by Oliver Hirschbiegel: I've listened to this commentary before, but I caught so much more on this re-listen. Very little technical talk here (Hirschbiegel explaining his hatred for movie-lighting) but as far as historical talk goes, this track really shines well.
-----------------------------------------
4th:
7. One for the Fire: The Legacy of 'Night of the Living Dead' (2008): Lots of good, essential stuff to find out here. The problem is that it's oddly structured. Talking about the cast, talking about the production company, talking about the cast, talking about the release, and going back to talking about the cast again? A chronological timeline was needed. Aside from that, I loved the Duane Jones segment and it was good to hear about the copyright situation.
8. Doctor Strange (2016)-Commentary by Scott Derrickson: Even though Derrickson hardly takes a breather, it's still pretty much a yawn-inducing track with Derrickson going over too much of the themes. At least we've got a Marvel commentary that explains how so many of the Stan Lee cameos were done.
9. The Making of 'They Live' (1988)-Probably the most entertaining 8-minute featurette I'll ever see. Most of it is spent on the big fight (Bonus points for that) but there's also Carpenter's plot-synopsis which makes the movie sound better than it actually is!
-----------------------------------------
5th:
10. This Stuff'll Kill Ya! (1971)-Commentary by Daniel Krogh: Despite not having seen the film in over 20 years, Krogh still came prepared for this track. Couldn't believe Larry Drake and Tim Holt were in this!
11. You're So Cool, Brewster! The Story of Fright Night (2016)-I admit to doing a lot of skipping during Part 2 (That movie's just so bland to me) but everything covered in Part 1 gets an A+. Well, if there was just ONE thing that I wish was talked about was the sound design. The monstrous screams of pain that I hear in that movie are among the most unforgettable in horror cinema. Just a little shoutout to that department would have been a little nice.
-----------------------------------------
6th:
12. "Oh, Hi Mark: Making a Disaster/Directing a Disaster" (2017) [The Disaster Artist]-Just standard stuff. I hope the commentary adds more (I'll get to it later in the month)
-----------------------------------------
7th:
13. Otis (2008)-Commentary with Director Tony Krantz and Writer Erik Jendresen: Even though the filmmakers say right off the bat that this film is a satire, the whispery monotone delivery by them gave me the impression of something darker. Oh, and Krantz REALLY loved his lead actor.
14. The Evil Dead: One by One We Will Take You - The Untold Saga of the Evil Dead (2007)-Comes up a little short by not having Sam and Bruce around. Still though, it's quite refreshing to see a documentary that (Brilliantly) relies on outtakes rather than still photos!
-----------------------------------------
8th:
15. The American (2010)-Commentary by Anton Corbijn-I only got to listen to half of it. Even though I like the movie, I already need a break from dry commentaries.
16. Deranged Chronicles: The Making of “Deranged” (1993)-Although there's a few other participants involved (The Director & Producer) the segments with Tom Savini providing commentary on BTS footage shot by the producer was really enjoyable.
-----------------------------------------
9th:
17. The Rocky Horror Treatment (1981): Just take away all the Shock Treatment promotional material and you're left with some (Early) swell footage of the early days of Rocky mania.
18. Mysteries of Love (2002) [Blue Velvet]: Great, comprehensive documentary (My favorite so far) This could also be the most open I've seen Lynch be when it comes to the making of his films.
-----------------------------------------
10th:
19. Dawn of Sound: How Movies Learned to Talk (2007) [The Jazz Singer]: Been a while since I've seen this. Longer than I thought it was (In a good way) and I keep on forgetting that sound films existed before 1927!
-----------------------------------------
11th:
20. Acting 'Carrie' (2001)/Visualizing 'Carrie' (2001): My second time seeing these and they still remain as perfect docs/featurettes. The only problem is I keep meaning to start with "Visualizing" first and "Acting" second.
-----------------------------------------
12th:
21. Elvis Presley: The Searcher (2018)-As of now, this is the ELVIS documentary to top.
22. Superior Firepower: The Making of 'Aliens' (2003)-I still have never seen any of these ALIEN documentaries yet! Felt like starting with this one. Nice to hear what a hardass Cameron is capable of being. Never knew that Michael Biehn could be so hyper in interviews...and RIP Bill Paxton.
-----------------------------------------
13th:
23. Da Hammer: Interview with Fred Williamson (2003) [1990: Bronx Warriors]: 43-minute interview with Williamson going over through most of his entire career (Explains the running time) For cult-movie fans, this one's a keeper mostly for his recollections of working with the Italians.
24. Now You See Him: The Invisible Man Revealed! (2000)-Standard Universal Horror doc. But at least this one gives a little more info on James Whale.
-----------------------------------------
14th:
25. Ed Wood: Look Back in Angora (1994)-I can't help that I've been on an Eddie Wood kick lately. This documentary tends to be chaotic with all the quips (Presented via Wood's films) but any Ed Wood documentary that has Love Feast in it will always be among the best.
26. Too Commercial for Cannes (2006) [A History of Violence]-Since it's Cannes week, felt like giving this a look. Too bad it was so incredibly short!
-----------------------------------------
15th:
27. The Making of 'The Terminator': A Retrospective (1992)-Convo between Cameron and Schwarzenegger. Felt like it was 3 minutes long. I'm really surprised no recent documentaries haven't been made about this movie yet.
28. The Making of 'Requiem for a Dream' (2001)-Man, I'm really starting to love commentary tracks that are spoken over BTS footage. It was also cool to get glimpses of the recordings of what just might be the most recognizable theme music of the 2000s.
-----------------------------------------
16th:
29. Fly Trap: Catching a Classic [The Fly]-Way too brief. Even for the covering of three films of a franchise.
30. The History of 'Cruising'/Exorcising 'Crusing'-Unlike ^that one. This was much to my liking. Interesting to hear the on-set friction created by protestors.
-----------------------------------------
17th:
31. Deadpool (2016) Audio commentary with director Tim Miller and Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld + Deadpool: From Comics to Screen... to Screen-Once again, the discussion about Stan Lee's cameo (In both the track & documentary) ends up being the stealer for me.
-----------------------------------------
18th:

DETECTIVES
and
DARK KNIGHTS Challenge

A DVDTalk "Make Your Own Challenge"
on Films and TV episodes
with BATMAN
or other DETECTIVES, VIGILANTES, and ANTI-HEROES
that FIGHT CRIMINALS
in DARK UNDERWORLDS

GOALS and GUIDELINES:
Primary directive is to have fun and get some late night/early morning watches of both Movies and TV s. Each movie or episode is counted as a one entry.Movies and TV episodes must involve BATMAN or possess some of his prime characteristics. In other words, DETECTIVES, MASKED AVENGERS, UNDERCOVER CRIME FIGHTER, ANTI-HEROES or VIGILANTES (by IMDb keywords).
The films and shows can also involve CRIME INFESTED CITIES influenced by or resembling GOTHAM.
Series can be viewed by season or just random individual episodes (planned series include KNIGHT RIDER, GOTHAM, MIKE HAMMER, THE PUNISHER, etc.)

MAY 1st
01. BATMAN:THE MOVIE (1966)
Would have enjoyed this as a kid because I recall being thrilled by Sea World's DC Superheroes water-skiing extravaganza, which borrowed heavily. The Adam West Batman wears out its welcome when stretched out to feature length. It's clearer to me than ever that Joel Schumacher and his Batcasts were doing up the camp in homage to this. This isn't as entertaining as either of his movies, which I have grown in fondness for through the years. But Holy catnip, Batman! Former Miss America Lee Meriwether fills out her Catwoman costume flawlessly. Possibly my favorite interpretation. She gets sexy time with West in her dual role as the Russian journalist, Kitka. 4.7/10

MAY 3rd
02. BLACK SCORPION (1995)
This Corman-produced action flick has an asthmatic villain known as The Breathtaker, but it's Amazonian beauty Joan Severance in the lead that takes my breath away. I remember snagging a Playboy featuring her on the cover to promote Zalman King's Red Shoe Diaries. Those eyes...those legs...that rear. The movie understands the importance of costumed heroines donning hooker boots and thongs (thank you, nineties). She's a B movie bombshell if ever there was one. You're never going to see Black Widow naked and straddling anybody in a Marvel movie, so keep dreaming. 6.6/10

MAY 4th
03. KNIGHT RIDER:"KNIGHT OF THE PHOENIX PART I" (1982)
I'd never seen this debut episode featuring the origins of Michael Knight and his witty Trans-AM, KITT. Surprised to see a cameo by Oscar Goldman himself, Richard Anderson, when facially wounded Michael Long is selected to be rebuilt in the likeness of Michael Knight (David Hasselhoff). The KITT antics are pretty solid, especially when Knight falls asleep at the wheel. This actually predates Stephen King's Christine, but with King being such a television fan, I have to imagine him watching Knight Rider while pumping out drafts of that book. Everything the series would become known for is on full display here, including a pair of sexy ladies of the eighties, Pamela Susan Shoomp and Phyllis Davis. 5.8/10

MAY 5th
04. SUICIDE SQUAD: HELL TO PAY (2018)
The DC Animated Universe has a slight edge over their live action films of late, and the grittier and sleazier R-rated approach is a direction that I will continue to support. Marvel does pretty well in this arena too, when you consider Deadpool and some of the Netflix Originals. As comic book movies of every creed continue to dominate our culture, it seems futile to resist. You've got to forge your own path through the gauntlet sometimes. it will be fascinating to see where it all leads. Some of these alternate universe characters are pretty cool, but I need to catch up on my actual comic book reading to stay afloat at times. Had a buddy doing Cliffs Notes as we watched. Killer Frost and Harley Quinn deserved better animation here, but I get some legit kicks out of this Squad's commitment to brutality and mayhem. 5.9/10

MAY 6th
05. VENGEANCE: UNLIMITED: "CRUEL AND UNUSUAL" (1998)
Gone too soon Michael Madsen TV vehicle has one of the coolest pilots I've watched in some time. Madsen is a true dark knight, and he will get you the payback that the courtrooms failed to give you. Love the appearance of character actors that you love to hate, Gregg Henry and Ray Wise. 8.4/10

06. ACTS OF VENGEANCE (2017)
Taking a gander at his recent credits, it seems safe to say that Banderas is doubling-down on DTV action. He makes a good call in teaming with Isaac Florentine for this entertainingly hardcore revenge flick. 7.2/10

MAY 10th
07. ACTS OF VIOLENCE (2018)
Bruce Willis is pretty much foregoing the concept of character development with these extended cameo paycheques, and at this point I think Steven Seagal clocks in more screen time per film. Cole Hauser is probably the most interesting and credible of the cutout characters here. It's new levels of pulp mindlessness, but I was somehow able to have enough fun with the stupidity and gratuitousness to keep it rolling through the lame ass end credits. 4.2/10

MAY 14th
08. STILL OF THE NIGHT (1982)
Robert Benton takes a stab at a Hitchcockian thriller with mixed results. Technically, it's a bit wooden considering the impressive talent behind the camera. Nestor Almendros makes great use of light and shadow, and editors Jerry Greenberg and Bill Pankow cut the suspense scenes with particular flair. Not surprisingly, they would team up on several of DePalma's better films of the eighties. More serious faults are found in the screenplay and characterizations. I think to make this a more effective noir mystery Scheider's character needed a layer of darkness or a streak of corruption. His psychiatrist is a bit too clean and he's a total "momma's boy". He barely crosses the line with Streep's femme fatale and their whole relationship lacks fire. Streep looks more feminine than we've come to expect, but sexiness might be her biggest acting challenge. She also seems pretty uncomfortable with those cigarettes. Is that intended to be metaphorical or Freudian? Sometimes with these loopy psychodramas, it can be difficult to tell. 5.6/10

MAY 17th
09. BLOOD AND WINE (1996)
Florida is my favorite setting for movies, especially those of the crime and neo noir genres. It's that beauty mixed with tackiness that I find so appealing and I think I'll be exploring the orange state more this year---consider that my own little "Florida project". Speaking of orange and sunshine, this one I mostly recommend for Newton Thomas Sigel's photography. He's got to be among the most unsung heroes in the DP department. Check that credit list of his. Nicholson, Caine, and Lopez all come ready to play here and they're pretty fun to watch. I think the biggest problem is that Stephen Dorff comes across as completely unlikable and uninteresting. Couldn't get behind him at all. I was rooting for Jack all the way. 6.2/10

MAY 19th
10. THE FOREIGNER (2017)
Fiercely underwhelming revenge flick from Martin Campbell that becomes a pale knock-off of First Blood in its final act. Jackie Chan is in one-note forlorn mode, and I could have used a bit of Drunken Master or Supercop instead. 4.4/10

MAY 21st
11. DARK CRIMES (2018)
So, following this I could more easily picture Jim Carrey in a Lars von Trier film, and at this point I think that has a better chance of getting made than the further exploits of Ace Ventura (if I'm not wrong, this is the first time Carrey has played a "detective" since When Nature Calls). I found it pretty fascinating for the most part and that's likely because I have a penchant for catatonic and bleak European cinema. I fell asleep in my attempt to get through The Avengers: Infinity War. Didn't feel any emotional connection to those characters and I'm just bored by the triviality of it all. There is a scene here where I felt the full weight of Carrey's grief toward the death of a family member. For a film that seems to be intentionally eschewing emotions and keeping its audience at a distance, I think that moment worked beautifully. 7.4/10
