7th Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Discussion Thread March 2018

The 7th Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge
Discussion Thread March 2018

Dates: Sunset on February 28th to sunrise on April 1st.

We have two overlapping challenges this year. The Oscar challenge runs until March 4th, so any action/adventure flicks that were nominated or won Oscars will count as double credit for both challenges during the first four days of March.

Also, the B-Movie/Exploitation Challenge begins at dusk on March 30th so any action/adventure movies that also qualify for the April challenge will count as double credit.

Rules: Any film or TV show listed on IMDB with a genre of action, adventure, crime, or mystery counts for this challenge. You can use any counting method you choose.

Checklist is still open for discussion, and will be in post #2 for easier editing and cut and pasting.

Any questions? Please feel free to ask! This is my first time ever running a challenge but I am excited to do so. Let me know if I can do anything to make the challenge more fun. I hope everyone has a great time!

I'm really looking forward to this. I'm not really working on the AA Challenge, but I have been tempted to watch some action adventure movies for the Challenge to get me primed for this one.

Re: 7th Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Discussion Thread March 2018

Looking forward to this year's Challenge. I have a wee nitpick about the 'Watch an item from at least 7 of the following subgenres' list. Anime isn't a genre anymore than animation is a genre. To illustrate my point I've selected I've selected seven anime movies and matched them to their requisite sub-genre for this list. Using OVA's and tv series makes filling the list even easier. (Don't get me started about the animation ghetto in the States).

Watch an item from at least 7 of the following subgenres.
--- Assassin / Hitman - Golgo 13: The Professional (1983)
--- Based on a true story - The Wind Rises (2013)
--- Comic book / Pulp fiction -
--- Comedy - The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)
--- Conspiracy thriller -
--- Exploitation / B-Movie -
--- Fantasy / Science-Fiction - Dirty Pair: Project Eden (1986)
--- Film Noir / Neo-noir -
--- Hong Kong crime -
--- Horror -
--- Kung fu / Martial arts - Fist of the North Star (1986)
--- Modern Caper / Heist - Lupin III: The Mystery of Mamo (1978)
--- Mystery / Thriller -
--- Samurai -
--- Serial Killer -
--- Spy / Espionage -
--- Swordplay -
--- Urban cop thriller -
--- War -
--- Western - Trigun: Badlands Rumble (2010)

Re: 7th Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Discussion Thread March 2018

I was kind of iffy on including Anime so I don't have a problem with removing it. I think at first I was worried I wouldn't have enough categories so I stuck it in there as a placeholder.

Thanks for starting the thread Greg. I’m really looking forward to next month and have already begun watching some content that would count, plus I’m finding myself thinking of what I can watch for this Challenge.

Since the start of the challenge is just over a week away, I decided to do a pre Challenge and use the what are you watching thread to make note of my viewings. Mainly because this Challenge is in my top three favorite ones. Up there with sci fi and horror. I plan to start today, since I have so much I can watch.

Re: 7th Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Discussion Thread March 2018

I’m glad that I can watch Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on Netflix. While I was taking a nap today, one of my dogs took the case for Season One right off of the coffee table and began chewing it. Hopefully most of the discs are ok, but at the very least, disc one is now too scratched to play.

If the scratches aren't too onerous, but the disc doesn't play, try a mixture of toothpaste and baking soda. Use a wet wash clothe to polish the scratches with the mixture. If it works great, if not, the disc wasn't working anyway.

Just in time for the Challenge (assuming one can resist temptation for a week), there's a fresh season (S. 4) of Thunderbirds Are Go and finally, the back half of The Tick season one, not too mention the second season of Jessica Jones starts early March.

Re: 7th Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Discussion Thread March 2018

Less than a week to go, and I’m getting more and more excited. Thinking of watching action adventure movies that are eligible for this month’s AA Challenge. Right now I’m watching some Ancient Aliens , which in my mind would count, being about ancient mysteries of the past.

What is everyone thinking of starting with? I am probably going to watch Godzilla: Final Wars on Wednesday night. I haven't seen it in about 10 years and remember having a lot of fun with it.

Re: 7th Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Discussion Thread March 2018

I've been going through the Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection on BD. I've intentionally held off on Rear Window & Vertigo until the first few days in March since they'd count for the Academy Awards challenge as well. I'm embarrassed to admit I've never seen the latter. And that's despite owning the DVD for a number of years.

Not sure yet, I plan on watching a lot on Wednesday night, so just might start by browsing the Dish Guide. Usually a good amount of qualifying movies and tv on at any one time.

I have a BR copy of The Rockford Files I've been itching to watch. I'll likely concentrate on it with some episodes of Poirot and some noirs I've picked up over the past year thrown in for good measure.

I'm not going to be too ambitious tomorrow. Sunset for me is around 7:45. I'm thinking of starting the Challenge with The Incredible Martial-Arts Mayhem Kung-Fu Trailer Show. That's gonna eat up the whole evening.

Thursday is when I start burning through Psych's Yin/Yang trilogy, The Tick, Thunderbirds Are Go, etc...

That reminds me that I never did finish my Thunderbirds Blu Ray set that I won in the Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge a few years ago. That might be one thing I work on next month.

Vertigo is fantastic, although for me personally, it was kind of an acquired taste. 2018 is actually its 60th anniversary and Fathom Events is doing theatrical screenings on the 18th and 21st.

Just a reminder that the challenge begins tonight at sunset. Hope everyone has an action-packed month.

And remember, don't try any of the stuff you see at home.
