It’s not quite official yet, but it’s a near-certainty that the next Call of Duty is Black Ops IV. Rumors have been swirling about this for a few weeks now (as first reported by Eurogamer), and Kotaku can confirm via our own sources that those rumors are true. Plus, there’s tonight’s assist from a future NBA MVP.

Of course, the roman numeral for 4 is “IV,” so there’s no indication that this is the actual logo for Black Ops IV. But we’ve heard from two people familiar with the game’s development that the next Call of Duty is indeed a fourth Blops, to be developed by Treyarch, the studio behind the first three Black Ops games. Just like those games, it’ll take place in a near-future setting. No word on whether James Harden will be a character.
Activision didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. It’s not clear whether Harden is having some fun with rumors or helping launch a viral marketing campaign for the next Call of Duty, but we really, really hope it’s the former.
UPDATE (10:03pm): Shortly after publication, one source confirmed that Harden is indeed wearing the official logo for, uh, Black Ops IIII.

I hope that most of their customers are middle school kids that struggle with Roman numerals and don't end up buying it.

IIII might have stuck around because it's easily recognizable as four. IV involves a little math. Yes, it's just one simple subtraction operation, but keep in mind that when subtractive notation really caught on in the Middle Ages, the majority of people weren't literate or numerate. Subtraction was a lot to wrap the head around.
I kid, of course.
IIII is interesting... I'm surprised I hadn't seen or noticed it before, but I'm sure I will now.

What makes you all C% sure it's Roman Numerals? Why can't it be tallies? Maybe the fifth game in the series will have a diagonal slash through the lines.

Haven't played a treyarch title since Black ops 1 - might give this one a shot. Some people skipped WW2 because it's "Boots on the Ground" yet it plays just as fast as Infinite warfare and you won't even miss the ability to thrust.

I never play the single player anyway, so if this means it launches with like 20 MP maps, I'm all for it. WWII launching with 9 maps was complete garbage.

I read they're also considering throwing in a battle royale mode like PUBG and Fortnite; which would make sense considering their popularity right now. That being said, I'll skip it without a campaign. The BO series in particular always had a damn good campaign (versus other CoD games). I can (and do) still pop in BO3 for multiplayer.

Sorry to see they might or will be ditching the SP Campaign part. In the past for the downright hardcore players, it was the BF Series while COD provided a all-in-one for about everyone; SP, co-op and MP. I loved the Modern Warfare series with COD:MW4 as one of my favorites along with World At War. I can see the reasoning on their part but I'm sure a lot of COD fans will feel let down.....me included.

The greed behind these companies really pushes them to make stupid decisions. The success of GTA V Online has every software house continually pushing the always online play because thats the way to squeeze every last penny from the gamer.
I am sick of this attitude. There are more gamers who do not play online than do, but they just ignore them in favor of producing a product that believe can generate more revenue over time and take less work to deal with. Hey buy a new skin for your gun, how about this stupid sticker for your characters backpack....just sickening greed.
Well i was always underwhelmed by these games. They were fine, but forgettable. Played through them all and never returned to one yet. Even the multiplayer i found tedious. So the good news is there is one less game i need to get this holiday season.

I'd bet they're saving millions by cutting out MSQ when you compare costs saved versus sales they may lose from people who wanted that content. The customers they lose over this won't make them blink.

I've never really cared for the single player to be honest. I mean some were great (and the new modern warfare remaster is worth playing through multiple times) but these games are ALL about the multiplayer. Yes, I know there are some out there who only play the single player but they're not going to miss that player base should they get rid of it - especially in these days of micro-transaction mania.
I'm all for it if it greatly changes the multiplayer for the better.

The rumors also make more sense now that they are including a remastered version of CoD MW2 with the "premium" version, but it won't include the multiplayer. It would help fill the lack of single player for this game.
