These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags aren't always used in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

Re: "Ghostwatch" Reviews/Discussion - 2017 Horror Challenge

I especially enjoyed Ghostwatch, I've heard good things about it and am glad to see it delivers well. The twist of a mass seance is brilliant and really pulls in a mass hysteria vibe. There's a good attention to detail with small touches, like a ghostly image reflected in the window that no one ever references just left for viewers to see and wonder. Nicely paced television special feel with charismatic anchors and enough moving pieces to keep things entertaining offering tidbits of the story in a convincing way. They can just throw whatever at the audience through telephone call ins, research data, or house footage.
The ghost voice is eerie.

There were a few unintentionally funny bits - I love how they just shove all the ‘debris evidence’ into a plastic tub. The cameraman just walked around with a suction bulb?

The video quality on Alyxstarr’s link is pretty good, I’m impressed and glad I didn't give in to a degraded YouTube rip in past years.

My husband and I watched this a few weeks ago, before I started this challenge. We just happened to see it listed on Shudder. We love anything BBC so it was right up our alley.

The premise was fun (a fake "live" documentary show) and there were some good scary moments. The special effects at the end were more elaborate than I was expecting. A bit over the top there are the end, but still, lots of fun.

This was a fun selection. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. I like that it felt very authentically like a real show. It's cool that they used real reporters and anchors as themselves, something I realized when looking at the IMDB page. It just added that little bit extra in terms of realism.

The Wikipedia page for this film is pretty informative. It sounds like this had sort of War of the Worlds reaction with people calling in to BBC because the number on screen was the actual BBC number. There's also a listing of different moments where the ghost can be seen. It doesn't match exactly with the Alyxstarr link but close enough to find it. The sightings are all very brief, but I appreciate that extra little bit of detail woven into the film.

It actually is pretty common for a cameraman to have those on hand. Suction bulbs are used to clean lenses. The bulbs blow off dust and debris without having to actually touch the lenses.

Add to the list of unintentionally funny bits the use of the word gloryhole. Anyone who knows what that really is had to get a chuckle. It momentarily took me out of the movie each time I heard it.

And agreed on video quality. I thought it looked great.

I'm an hour in, and still nothing....

This reminds me of Jeff Goldblum'l line in Jurassic Park,"During your dinosaur tour, you do plan on having dinosaurs?"

Let's hope this doesn't turn out like Al Capone's vault...

Enjoyed this, but could see feeling the opposite if I was in a different mood when starting it.

Followed it up the similar WNUF Halloween Special, which was campier and not as good, but still an ok watch.

I've got about 20 minutes to go, and I just wanted to comment. This feels like a typical show, where you would turn on the telly, and it's playing, so you sit down to watch. It's 'live' television, and although the purpose is to identify a ghost, reality suggest that it probably won't happen. This feels very real to me. You have the interview, where the lady is cut off mid sentence due to some technical difficulty. The parapsychologist wants a replay of the tape, but it's going to take a minute to get it ready.

Well, the host did say this is where it's all going to happen ...or perhaps not. So far it's not happening

My cats had some reactions to the cats noises on the video more than a reaction from me. Slow burner but misses the mark on scares.

Seeing Lister in the video takes away a bit of its "reality."

Same, I wasn't sure if they were going for silly or what. It all played as rehearsed and fake.
