Sunday Night Trivia Question: The Final Chapter

_________________________________________________________________

Best List Voting is open.

PM or email.

__________________________________________________________________

Lists are due 11/7.

This is if you wanna be eligible for certain prize categories -- 50 & under, 100 & under, the optional lists, and whatever else I'm probably forgetting.

_________________________________________________________________

Winners Addresses are due 11/10.

***Please don't abandon this thread immediately after Halloween!*** I'll also post the winners on the Facebook page, but don't rely on the post to make it to your news feed/wall. Check the OHMC Page directly.

If you already own some of the prizes, let me know and I'll see what I can do. As usual, no guarantees I can accommodate your request.

Ideas/Suggestions for Next Challenge:
Recently deceased seems unruly with so many names and a lot of them don't seem to have big horror outputs, maybe trim it down to just watch a movie by a recently deceased contributor.
Remove 'masters of commentary,' it's too specific when most participants don't emphasize commentary tracks anyway.
Consider alternating out 'tales place on lake/water' because variety.
Be cool with multiple viewings of same movie.
The checklist feels routine and most people who watch 100 films might automatically complete it anyway, maybe alter checklist to include subtle things like grimy walls, white dresses, axe, flickering lights, or other tropes more like a scavenger hunt.
Maybe allow for multiple day themes - for example, there are tons of zombie or vampire films so maybe there could/should be multiple zombie days (or maybe an Undead week with linked themes alternating each day)

Future Theme or Checklist Ideas: Victims sleeping through chaos and/or sleep related, Mirrors, Takes Place in a Mall checklist item, Psychiatric Theme Day, Sealed Room theme day (a room or building that is sealed away is catalyst), Electronic voice phenomena and/or cameras/technology showing truth, Jocks/Bullying, Redemption/Soul Harvesting, burgomaster present, horror movie playing on television, dogs, countess bathory

Maybe we could extend the chronological horror theme day to include 75th anniversary as well.

Shall We Play a Game? Theme Day - films that revolve around a game or contest (Saw films, Would You Rather, Cube, Most Dangerous Game). Didn't check but not sure if we have had something like this as a theme before.

Master of Commentary: Herschel Gordon Lewis, George Romero

Future Actor/Actress Ideas: Brian Cox, Caroline Williams, Helga Liné

Talbot, welcome to the forum! One post for your list is the preferred method. And please share with us in the main discussion thread! What's your story? How'd you find us?

Thanks Trevor for the welcome! I tried putting all my posts in my 1st one earlier, however it said I could use only 60 characters (or something like that) & I could not add anymore.
You have included 71 images in your message. You are limited to using 60 images so please go back and correct the problem and then continue again.

Images include use of smilies, the BB code [img] tag and HTML tags. The use of these is all subject to them being enabled by the administrator.

Am I doing something wrong & how do I list all my posts in my 1st one?

Where is the main discussion thread? Thanks!

EDIT: I went back to my 1st post & took out all the frankies (I was using these to rate the movies I watched) & it let me put all the posts in. What disappoints me is I'm in another forum where we are allowed to use the skull smilies and it allows me to put them all in my 1st post as I update them!

^ Yeah, limited images, even tiny ones, is one of the limitations of our old forum software.

Here's the main discussion:

Nice list and mini-reviews!

Re: The 13th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

Hi! I’m new here and late to the show but at least it’s not as late as my monthly cycle. I’m a complete movie noob and there are MANY spooky movies I have yet to see (this resulted in years of refusing to watch scary things cause I'm such a pansy) so please don’t take my reviews seriously. Just think of me as a weirdo clogging up thread space.

I guess I’ll follow suit and put that handy dandy star* next to movies that were my first time viewing.

1. 10/7: Gerald's Game (2017)
*
That old man was fantastic. Excuse me, sir, I would be happy to partake in your game. Otherwise, all this movie did for me was remind me of my long awaited aunt flow after all those pads she used on her hand.

2. 10/8: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
*
Don’t be alarmed, I am totally aware this movie has been around longer than I’ve been alive and yet it took me this long to watch it. Anyone else think the hitchhiker could be a super special Franco brother? And I could have done without all the screaming at the end; my neighbors called the cops.

3. 10/14: The Innkeepers (2011)
*
I really want to be BFFs with the dude in the tighty whiteys.

4. 10/14: The Babysitter (2017)
*
I laughed so hard I sharted. It wasn’t scary enough to give me sweaty pits but it had plenty of blood to qualify for Halloween.

5. 10/14: The Craft (1996)

Let’s fast forward to 1998 so we can put Fairuza Balk in The Waterboy where she belongs. Cute movie though. Sisters before misters!

6. 10/15: Pet Sematary (1989)
*
Dedicated to switching my career after watching this. I definitely want to be a truck driver. Also, jammed out with my clam out during the credits.

7. 10/15: Poltergeist (1982)
*
Slimy substances make for a good time. Don’t take my word for it, just ask my boyfriend.

8. 10/16: Lights Out (2016)

Speaking of my boyfriend, I would dump him for that Rebecca character. HI HUNNY!

9. 10/21: Hocus Pocus (1993)

This movie has provided me with so many amazing quotes that I’ve memorized over the years! I participate in repeating them daily. I mean, every time I step on asphalt I do a lil jig and yell, “Tis firm as stone!”

10. 10/21: The Conjuring (2013)

One of my favorites! Just an FYI though, do not attempt to snuggle too closely during your first viewing. This will result in unanticipated flailing of limbs. Just pause the movie, okay??

11. 10/21: The Conjuring 2 (2016)

The possession is a bit more extreme, but Patrick Wilson is still gorgeous so who gives a crap?

12. 10/21: Beetlejuice (1988)

Michael Keaton is hilarious and always out of breath. And why did the doorknob disappear on the brick wall? Anyway, I think I have sand stuck in my snatch.

13. 10/21: Halloween (1978)

Can we please bring back flared jeans? I really need to hide my calves.

14. 10/21: Insidious (2010)

I just wish they’d make a dinosaur movie starring this needy little bedridden asshat of a child.

15. 10/22: House on Willow Street (2016)
*
The only thing I remember is a LOT of dark chocolate syrup. Also F bombs. And that guy from Scooby Doo.

16. 10/23: 1922 (2017)
*
I spent half of the movie trying to figure out how Wilfred can talk with his teeth clamped together 100% of the time and the other half realizing this was the same jerk that destroyed our only chance of giving The Mist a happy ending.

17. 10/24: The Last Exorcism (2010)
*
I was so not expecting this to be filmed as a home-video/documentary type of thing but DEER LORD this was very well put together and so fun to watch! In other news, can we get stats on how many humans are ACTUALLY named Cotton?

18. 10/25: The Haunting in Connecticut (2009)
*
I am so obsessed with hauntings and super weird history stories so this nailed it for me. Kept me interested, kept me spooked, kept me ordering those adult diapers my daddy regularly needs hehe... love you old man. Oh, and can you imagine the amount of bird poop in that house?

19. 10/26: The Witch (2016)
*
Their accents were thicker than my thighs! So, I didn't realize this movie needed a bit more concentration until it was too late. I was very tired and thanks to the slow start I found myself dozing off. What? The nature sounds were so relaxing. Ultimately I'd like to give this another try when I can focus.

20. 10/28: We Are Still Here (2015)
*
Classic car goodness, a plethora of 70s décor and a dude swallows a very dry pair of socks. I'd give this a solid of rating of: Sham WOW.

21. 10/28: The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

My generation of emo kids loved this movie more than getting high, but hey, I get it! It's dark and mysterious with a fabulous soundtrack, similar to my bathroom experiences.

22. 10/28: Corpse Bride (2005)
*
I guess I just wanted more Tim Burton in my life, but seriously, where has this movie been hiding and why have I never heard of it before? Oh, I live under a rock, that's why.

23. 10/31 HAPPY HALLOWEEN: Midnight Meat Train (2008)
*
I was hoping that "Meat Train" was an euphemism but instead it was a gory, disgusting mess. It contained just enough weirdness to satisfy me but at the end of the day, I'd rather watch Gone In 60 Seconds, where I prefer Vinnie Jones as a mute.

24. 10/31 HAPPY HALLOWEEN: The Void (2016)
*
Lots of voices, lots of Daniels, lots of "wtf" moments. Not sure what else to say. Boing?

Re: The 13th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

I've only just discovered this forum, so I'm joining the party very late for 2017. I've been watching horror all month, but not based around any list. So I may not finish the challenge, but I'd like to participate and get a feel for it for 2018. I BEGAN THE ACTUAL CHALLENGE ON OCT 22.

PERSONAL GOAL: 30 horror movies watched this month, at least 20 first time viewing.

Watched so far in October (before joining the challenge):
1. The Nanny (1965) ☼ - TV/TCM -- My rating: 6/10
-- I love Betty Davis and this had a cool retro vibe, but ultimately the thrills were pretty tame.
2. Horror of Dracula (1958) - TV/TCM -- My rating: 6/10
-- Love the rich color and sensuality of this. And Christopher Lee! Plot is pretty blah though.
3. Evolution (2015) ☼ - streamed on Amazon -- My rating: 7/10
--- Visually very cool, creepy and strange. Loved the body horror, but the story was a muddy mess. According to interviews with the director, it was intended to remain vague and open to interpretation (what's really going on in the story) and that's certainly the case.
4. The Wailing (2016) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 6/10
--- I expected more from this based on others' reviews but just found it a bit long and unoriginal. It's worth a watch though just for the Korean setting.
5. The Limehouse Golem (2017) ☼ - streamed on Amazon -- My rating: 4/10
--- This one is skippable. I love Jack the Ripper stuff, but this was lame. It felt cheap, the script was pretty cheesy, and the lead actor who played the detective (Bill Nighly, whom I have liked in other things) was totally lifeless.
6. HOWL (2016) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 8/10
--- Loved it! The everyday/loser characters were fun and relateable. The scary monsters were really scary. Best werewolf flick I've seen in a long time.
7. Love Witch (2016) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 5/10
--- This one is also highly rated but ultimately disappointing for me. All the retro 70's stuff was fun, and the uber anti-feminist satire. But ultimately it felt a little too genuinely misogynistic to me and just bored me a bit.
8. Death Note (2017) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 8/10
--- Loved this! I love anything metaphysical. Found out people have dinged this because it's a remake of better Japanese manga stuff, but not knowing that, I loved this live action netflix version.
9. A Dark Song (2016) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 9/10
--- I adored the genuine feel of the occultism in this, the slow build, the unlikable mage character, and the ending special effects.
10. Absentia (2011) ☼ - streamed on Amazon -- My rating: 7/10
-- The low budget aspect was a little distracting at first, but the fairytale horror was original and well-done.
11. The Blackcoat's Daughter ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 6/10
-- I loved the school setting and the paranormal/occult aspect. It was difficult to understand though, who the girl in the alt timeline was. Had to look up the meaning online after watching it.
12. Insidious 3 (2015) ☼ - on TV -- My rating: 4/10
-- Felt like a total rehash of #1, dark and unrelentingly creepy in a way that just weighs you down. Not entertaining.
13. The Invitation (2015) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 8/10
--- I genuinely loved the premise of this and appreciated the not-so-subtle jabs and cults and LA culture. Very slow in the middle though.
14. The Canal (2014) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 6/10
15. Hell House LLC (2015) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 7/10
--- Very genuinely creepy. I've been to a number of haunted houses and worked in one, so I loved the premise.
16. Raw (2015) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 6/10
--- I didn't like this as much as the reviews/ratings suggested I would. I also didn't find it as gross as people said. Just OK. Characters very unlikable.
17. 1922 (2017) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 8/10
--- I loved this. It felt like a lot more "story" than a lot of horror and I loved the historical setting and the narrator voice.
18. The Leopard Man (1943) -- My rating: 8/10
--- I love the black and white ambiance and sense of dread in this. One of my all time favorites. Don't send the girl out to the store!

October 22, 2017
19. The Howling (1981) - streamed on Amazon -- My rating: 7/10
-- It's been decades since I saw this and I'd forgotten most of it. Pretty cool special effects for the time. A bit cheesy now.
20. Ghostwatch (BBC) (1992) ☼ - streamed on Shudder -- My rating: 7/10
-- My DH and I are big anglophiles so the British-ness of this was fun. It got pretty intense tat the end. Def worth watching.

October 23, 2017
21. Alucarda (1977) ☼ - Watched it at link posted on this forum -- My rating: 5/10
-- The poor production values really put me off, but the great acting from the leads and the naked demonic nuns were fun.
22. Cooties (2014) ☼ - streamed on Shudder -- My rating: 8/10
--- I loved the teacher humor and the romantic triangle. Lots of fun.

October 24, 2017
23. Tales from the Crypt: Dead Wait (1992) ☼ - streamed on Amazon, Dir Tobe Hooper -- My rating: 5/10
-- I selected this for Tobe Hooper because I liked voodoo-themed stories. It's cheesy but kind of fun. Plus it's short. A guy gets a job on an island plantation in order to steal a black pearl from the plantation owner. Whoppie Goldberg stars as the voodoo priestess who foils his plans. Extremely gory for TV.
24. The Visitor (1979) ☼ - streamed on Shudder -- My rating: 2/10
-- Honestly god awful. Terrible mishmash of evil child/possession and some weird New Agey sci-fi. Had some so-bad-its-funny moments, but mostly, it's just bad.
25. Curse of the Demon (1958) on Shudder -- My rating: 7/10
-- This is a classic and has a cool vibe, but ultimately I find it slow and boring to rewatch.

October 25, 2017
26. Jennifer's Body (2009) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 7/10
-- I liked this one more than I thought I would. Really fun teen/high school horror. Both Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried were amazing.
27. Cronos (1988) ☼ - streamed on Amazon -- My rating: 7/10
-- First time viewing this. Good retro horror. Ron Perlmann was fantastic.
28. From Beyond the Grave (1974) ☼ - TV/TCM -- My rating: 7/10 -- TCM
-- Horror anthology about an antiques dealer who sells 4 cursed objects. Fun and campy.

October 26, 2017
29. Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Summer Shade (1961) ☼ - streamed on dailymotion -- My rating 4/10
-- I watched this for Veronica Cartwright. It was short and sort of amusing but nothing epic.
30. Dagon (2002) ☼ - streamed on Amazon -- My rating: 6/10
31. Train to Busan (2016) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 8/10
32. Dracula's Daughter (1936) ☼ - TV/TCM -- My rating: 6/10
-- I watched this earlier in the month and forgot about it until I saw it on someone else's list. This was my first time seeing it and I liked it better than a lot of stuff from the 30's. The scene where the female vampire attacks the painter's model was erotic and intense.
33. Troll Hunter (2010) ☼ - streamed on Shudder -- My rating: 6/10
-- I watched this on my ipad on Shudder at odd moments over the course of a few days. It was hard to get into it and really dragged for me. Fun concept and well executed, but probably much funnier if you live in Norway.

October 27, 2017
34. Messiah of Evil (1974) ☼ - streamed on Amazon Prime -- My rating: 4/10
-- The bad production values and fuzzy print put me off a bit. Didn't love this.
35. The Babysitter (2017) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating: 8/10
-- This was fantastic! Loved everything about it from the casting, acting, production values, humor, and storyline. Really great stuff from Netflix.

October 28, 2017
36. Inferno (1980) ☼ - streamed on Shudder -- My rating: 5/10
-- Disappointed. They could have done so much more with the Three Mothers and three houses idea. I loved the pretty witch in the music lecture but then she never appeared again. Seems like 80% of it was just "being stalked in creepy house" versus getting into the actual mythology of the three mothers or doing more with story. But there were some cool moments.
37. The Initiation (1984) ☼ - streamed on Amazon -- My rating: 6/10
38. Tales of Halloween (2015) on Netflix -- My rating: 7/10
-- There are some fun segments in this. I loved the Hansel and Gretl/woman who wants a baby segment and the alien segment. Others were just okay. Definitely worth viewing.
39. Tales from the Crypt: People Who Live in Brass Hearses (Bill Paxton) (1993) ☼ - streamed on Amazon -- My rating: 7/10
-- Bill Paxton is amazing in this. A fun watch.

October 29, 2017
40. Child's Play (1988) ☼ - streamed on Amazon -- My rating: 8/10
-- If I ever saw this before, I don't remember. It was much better than I expected. Lots of story, good production values and acting.
41. Twilight Zone: Where is Everybody? - streamed on Amazon -- My rating 6/10
-- I watched this for Bud Westmore. I know I probably saw it long ago but didn't remember much. Good, solid Twilight Zone episode.
42. The Raven (1963) - streamed on Amazon -- My rating 7/10
Humorous rather than scary but it's Vincent Price! Loved the end magician's battle. I'm counting this as a rewatch because it was vaguely familiar.
43. It (2017) ☼ - saw in theater -- My rating: 7/10
-- This was very well done. The story was so familiar to me though that I got a little bored. Definitely a worthy addition to the King canon.
44. Dead Awake (2016) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating 6/10
-- I liked the idea of this and it was well executed. But ultimately it felt like a middling movie. Nothing that will stick with me.
45. Shaun of the Dead (2004) ☼ - streamed on Amazon -- My rating 8/10
-- Can't believe I never saw this. I loved the British humor and realistic/loser characters.

October 30, 2017
46. Ghost Story (1981) ☼ - streamed on Amazon -- My rating 8/10
Hubby's pick for the evening. One of our favorite ghost stories of all time. Fantastic cast.
47. The House that Dripped Blood (1971) ☼ - streamed on Amazon -- My rating 4/10
Lame. Other than the retro factor, pretty useless. There was one sort of scary story (the first one, with an author and strangler), but the other 3 were dumb.

October 31, 2017
48. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) ☼ - streamed on netflix - My rating 7/10
Good concept and mostly entertaining. I'm not a fan of claustrophobia movies though. They really get to me. The sense of being trapped in that bunker was palpable. Loved the ending.
49. Swamp Thing (1982) - Streamed on amazon - My rating 5/10
Super cheesy but a fun creature feature. Rewatch.
51. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once More With Feeling (2001) - Streamed on Hulu -- My rating 9/10
-- I watched the whole series years ago but forgot the specifics of this episode. Watched it for the checklist. Loved it. Made me want to rewatch all of Buffy.
52. Slither (2006) ☼ - streamed on Netflix -- My rating 8/10
Really fun update on the Invasion of the Body Snatchers idea. Fun and gory.
53. Halloween (1978) - streamed on Amazon -- My rating 10/10
An appropriate ending to the challenge. Always a classic.

NOTES:
I watched four 1/2 hour TV shows and one 1 hour TV show. Combining the 1 hour show and 2 half hour ones for 1 slot gives me 51 shows watched. The remaining 2 half hour TV shows I'll use a wild card for to make them full slots. Final total is 51.
