A Ghost Story (2017, D: David Lowery) S: Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara

Written and Directed by David Lowery
Starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara

With A Ghost Story, acclaimed director David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Pete’s Dragon) returns with a singular exploration of legacy, loss, and the essential human longing for meaning and connection. Recently deceased, a white-sheeted ghost (Academy Award-winner Casey Affleck) returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife (Academy Award-nominee Rooney Mara), only to find that in his spectral state he has become unstuck in time, forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. Increasingly unmoored, the ghost embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and history, confronting life’s ineffable questions and the enormity of existence. An unforgettable meditation on love and grief, A Ghost Story emerges ecstatic and surreal—a wholly-unique experience that lingers long after the credits roll.

I'll bite. Looks decent and the write-up sounds intriguing.

Didn't Netflix or Amazon offer all Sundance films a deal? Or was that some other festival?

I have a feeling this will end up like "It Comes at Night." High RT scores but lackluster interest by general moviegoers.

Definitely looks like it! Two theaters in my area are screening this starting Thursday/Friday, so I hope to see it by the weekend.

About fucking time. Like others have hinted, this will be well-received by critics but not liked by your average movie goers.

I think it looks fascinating.

Re: A Ghost Story (2017, D: David Lowery) S: Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara

Saw it this morning.

I enjoyed the film. It's beautifully shot and the concept is fascinating, quite mesmerizing in motion. It's quite somber, choosing to play on quiet ambiance. There isn't much dialogue but when there is, it felt meaningful, especially one particular monologue about halfway through the film. There is a specific scene involving Casey Affleck's character that will go down as one of my favorite scenes of 2017, mostly because of how much it resonated with me.

With that said, the first 20 minutes for me were a bit rough. Mostly because of some odd choices in long takes, which drag the pace down a bit (so early on). The last hour of the film is fantastic and I wanted a bit more of that.

Throwing Copper definitely hit it on the head, average movie goers will probably dislike this one as it moves very quietly & abstractly for most of it's run-time, even when you know what you might be getting into.

I swear one-fourth of the movie's run time was that single shot of her eating the damn pie!

But anyways, I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. Really hard to classify--not a horror movie, not extremely sad, not any major climatic ending.

A slow, thoughtful, somber take on life and death and attachment...and on being a ghost, from the ghost's perspective. Some pretty striking visual images throughout, too.

I like movies that have some ideas and points to make, that show you something different, and that you're thinking about afterwards--and I would have to say this movie did that for me.

I kinda agree with Ki-fi. Just rented from the library. Going to watch it again with the commentary.

This bored me to tears. It was an interesting and good concept that just went too long.

Finally saw this. I enjoyed it and want to watch it with the Lowery commentary as well.

Other than the stupid pie scene, everything else was good.

The pie scene is addressed in the commentary.

Yeah, I added it to my watchlist but I’m not sure if I’ll watch it. I was sold on the concept way back when, but the comments on here are a bit chilling. I’ll have to wait for the mood to strike me.

I saw it in the theater, and I thought there are moments of great profundity and some scenes that are wonderfully strange--and the pie scene works for me. It's worth a watch if you're looking for something that's off the beaten path.

Re: A Ghost Story (2017, D: David Lowery) S: Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara

Saw A Ghost Story late last year. Very impressive. I found it to be a extremely well-done film. Several comments:

-The film gave off a definite '70's vibe, though I know it took place in modern times. This was emphasized by the full-screen print, as well as the "soft" PQ - which was obviously intentional.

-I found the movie quite sad/poignant, and encompassed several elements, i.e.:

It was a commentary about people needing to move on after a great loss (i.e, the RM character). It was significant that she eventually sold the house & moved out, possibly because living there reminded her too much about the CA character - and, she wanted to get a fresh start somewhere else.

The passage of time was critical....
Spoiler:
I thought it was clever to show how the house the two characters lived in was occupied by others later, then torn down, and then the space was eventually made into a large high rise (supposedly 10-15 years?! into the future)....showing that life went on even after the CA character died. Then, the story shifted to show the American settlers in the distant past, the beginnings of the house, and eventually showing the CA/RM characters moving into the house....so, the ghost was essentially seeing himself in the past, and everything came full-circle.

I found the drunk hipster guy's monologue in the film mildly amusing & realistic, since it was so natural - and this is similar to what you would expect to hear someone philosophize about at an "intellectual" party like this. What made this monologue interesting is that it actually made a kind of logical sense, even if you don't 100% agree with what's being said here

Note that that this character was played by Will Oldham, who starred in a great film by Kelly Reichardt, Old Joy (2006). This film was about two friends who spent a weekend in the Oregon wilderness. Oldham has a couple of scenes in Old Joy where he philosophizes about the meaning of life & existence, etc. (similar to his scenes in A Ghost Story). In fact, he seems to be playing the same exact character in both movies - LOL.
