The Deuce (HBO) -- Series Thread -- created by David Simon -- S: Franco, Gyllenhaal

Thought we should start a thread for this new HBO Sunday Night drama. It premieres on 9/10/17 but the Pilot is already available for streaming on HBO Go.

About the Show
Get into the gritty and decadent world of NYC's Times Square in the 1970s, as the business of pleasure begins its climb to become a billion-dollar industry in this drama series from the creative team behind 'The WireŽ' and 'TremeŽ'. James Franco, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Carr, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Dominique Fishback, Emily Meade, Lawrence Gilliard, Jr. head up a stellar cast.

I haven't watched the pilot yet, but plan to soon. I'll give anything from David Simon at least a shot. And the Porn 'n Pimping biz is kind of an easier entry point than low-income housing was as a subject matter. Also a fan of both James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal (and both their brothers as well!). I hope James Franco pulls off the twin double-roll better than Ewan McGregor did on Fargo.

I was not at all impressed with the Pilot.

Ditto. Considering it's pedigree I'll stick with it for a little but though.

God damn Lisa P! Margarita Levieva looking as fine as ever. Must be a nice ego boost to be 37 playing 20. For comparison, Maggie Gyllenhaal is only 2 years older.

I wasn't much impressed with the pilot either. But I saw many blurbs of reviews saying it was another David Simon masterpiece. I didn't read much on it so I don't know if they were given more than just the first episode.

I will stick with it for sure though since the season is only 8 episodes.

I hope this isn't another Vinyl. Vinyl had an interesting premise, a solid cast, but a boring show.

So tonight is episode 2, right? They're not re-broadcasting the first one again, correct?

No. It's the pilot. They didn't broadcast it yet. It was only on demand.

Right, that's what I meant. Then tonight's episode is the one that was on demand, right?

Yeah, very underwhelmed by the first episode. Other than recreating the time period, I'm not sure what the show's creators are even going for. I feel like all this gritty 70's New York stuff is something we've seen in countless movies already.

Episode 2 better figure out how to be an engaging show.

re: The Deuce (HBO) -- Series Thread -- created by David Simon -- S: Franco, Gyllenhaal

After the failure of last year's Vinyl, I'm a little surprised HBO is so quick to go back to the same era (NYC, 1970s, etc.). I figure this show was already a decent way into development when the fate of Vinyl was decided, but it's an interesting observation.

Haven't checked this out yet, but will likely get to this week at some point.

I was also underwhelmed by this. Hopefully, it will improve.

Sounds like I'll let this one build up on the DVR for a few weeks before deciding to start it.

I thought it looked intriguing and I'll probably watch the whole season. It has hookers, pimps, tits and a James Franco doppelganger. Works for me.

First episode was ok, I'm fascinated by that whole era and the NYC porn scene at the time so I will stick with it and hope it gets better. I just hope it isn't the disappointment that Vinyl was, which I also had high hopes for due to interest in the subject matter.

Was The Bird With the Crystal Plumage intentionally misspelled on the movie marquee?

I'm still pretty meh after the second episode. Nice to see The Karate Kid is still getting some work.

Renewed. But HBO has backed out of renewals in the past. So we'll see if it sticks.

Much like Vinyl, 2 episodes and I'm out. Despite it's pedigree it's just not working for me. There's just too much out there nowadays to stick around and hope something gets more entertaining.
